I am on my other, even more ancient computer because since I updated Malwarebytes on my primary computer I can't do anything. It is an HP Pentium 4 running Windows XP. The computer boots and Windows starts. I get a message about unused icons and close it. I then get a pop=up saying that the Malwarebytes database is 7 days out of date. Whether I click to close the pop-up or click to update, the PC freezes. I can't open the Start menu or pull up the Task Manager. I can't do anything. I have rebooted about 8 times and the same thing happens. There are two accounts on the computer and it doesn't matter which one I use, the PC still freezes.

I am not an expert and I have no idea what to do since I can't go anywhere to do anything. I'm getting all kinds of update messages on this computer but I'm afraid to do any updates in case this one dies too and I can't get on the Internet at all.

Help!

I have also had a problem with malwarebytes on XP. The computer still works, but malwarebytes crashes with the message:

Runtime error '339': component 'vbalsgrid6.ocx' or one of its dependencies is not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid.

I have gone through the following process 3 times

run mbam-clean

disable virus software avg

run mbam-setup-1.60.0.1800

There is a known compatibility issue with version 1.60 and ZoneAlarm Free (the PRO version of ZoneAlarm does not have this issue). We are working on getting this issue resolved, however, in the meantime you may do the following so that you can avoid the system hang issue:

Boot into Safe Mode:

  • Restart your computer.
  • When the machine first starts again it will generally list some equipment that is installed in your machine, amount of memory, hard drives installed etc. At this point you should gently tap the F8 key repeatedly until you are presented with the Windows XP Advanced Options menu.
  • Select the option for Safe Mode using the arrow keys.
  • Then press Enter on your keyboard to boot into Safe Mode.

You should then be presented with the Windows XP Login screen. Log in to Windows and when it prompts you about Safe Mode and asks if you'd like to continue click Yes.

Once there, open Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and access the Protection tab. Uncheck the box next to Start protection module with Windows. and then exit Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and restart your computer, this time allowing it to boot normally. The freeze will no longer occur unless you enable Malwarebytes Anti-Malware's protection module while ZoneAlarm is running.

Please download and install the latest Microsoft Visual Basic Common Controls from here and then reinstall Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.60 if it is not still installed, and then see if it works or not.

If you continue to have problems, please contact our support staff directly at support@malwarebytes.org and they will assist you with this issue one on one.

Thanks :)
