This forum is a great service - Thanks to you folks for your help!

Working on cleaning up my son's computer.

Ran Malwarebytes a couple of times - it found and fixed a couple of items. Latest log below.

Ran Norton AV full scan - It found ~54 instances of Trojan.Brisv.A!inf - The FixBrisvA tool,

run in safe node cleaned them up. Windows Update was run to get the latest SP2 updates.

I think there's still some problems.

Looking at this a bit more this morning. My son's account has more symptoms than the others.

On his firefox will not run -- error on startup.

MBAM's update function does not work, though MBAM runs without finding any problems ( see log in previous post ).

The Show hidden files and folders option will not stay set. We set it and on the next view it's been unset.

When I log in to my account I get an error dialog :

Illegal system DLL relocation error from LifeExp.exe - The MS life camera app.

Thanks,

ashokan.

  • Root Admin

Start HJT and run Do a system scan only and place a check mark on the following items.

  • O20 - AppInit_DLLs: fowivj.dll briulc.dll inicep.dll jiuoev.dll
Then Quit All Browsers including the one you're reading this in now.
Then click on Fix checked and then quit HJT

Then run the following.

Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading ComboFix to your
DESKTOP
:
how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

NOTE!!:

You must save and run
ComboFix.exe
on your DESKTOP and not from any other folder.

Also,
DO NOT
click the mouse or launch any other applications while this is running or it may stall the program

Additional links to download the tool:

Note:

The
Windows Recovery Console
will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
  • Click
    Yes
to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

  • When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

  • Please post the
    C:\ComboFix.txt
    along with a
    new HijackThis log
so we may continue cleaning the system.

Hi and thanks for the instructions.

HJT deleted the specified entry.

CF installed the recovery console and ran a scan.

It displayed a few errors in it's dialog box :

Similar to:

The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process or file.

< repeated 3x >

SED: cant read CurrentCS00: No such file or directory

could not find C:\Combofix\CurrentCS00

< repeat 1st line 2x more >

During the run, after the desktop was removed a dialog box :

CF305.exe There is no disk in drive J:

<cancel> <ignore> <continue>

I hit cancel more than 6 times

Then another

VFind.cfexe - No Disk

again I hit cancel.

CF continued - rebooted machine,...

Hi and again thanks for the reply and instructions.

When I ran :

CMD /C ECHO Y|CHKDSK C: /F | SHUTDOWN /R /T 30

I got a reboot but no chkdsk on startup ; I ran chkdsk c: /f ; and typed a 'y' in the cmd window in answer to the

should this run on restart question. then i rebooted. I think chkdsk was running - lots of disk activity and a splash screen.

The splash screen ( from the FlyakiteOSX junk ) looked to be hiding the chkdsk output.

Left it running, will post results after work.

Run it from the recovery console perhaps ?

thanks,

-mike

Hi Mike,

If you have access to download and burn this CD and then run it that would be good. If not let me know and I'll take a closer look later tonight.

Requires access to a working computer with a CD/DVD burner to create a bootable CD.

    Avira AntiVir Rescue System
Avira AntiVir Rescue System is a Linux-based application that allows accessing computers that cannot be booted anymore. Thus it is possible to:

  • repair a damaged system,
  • rescue data,

  • scan the system for virus infections.

Just double-click on the rescue system package to burn it to a CD/DVD. You can then use this CD/DVD to boot your computer.
The Avira AntiVir Rescue System is updated several times a day so that the most recent security updates are always available.

Hi,

Ran the Avira scan. Could not find a log file to post. Moving around with the german keyboard map was difficult.

The scan renamed 16 files and also flagged ~238 warning messages for various reasons.

Here are a new set of MBAM and HJT logs, this time run from my son's user id , though it probably makes no difference.

( Note that I had to log in with a different id first in order to update MBAM )

Another interesting symptom -- right click on the start button and explorer dies -

Acutally it does matter which profile you're logged onto and all profiles should be scanned with MBAM once the main infections are removed.

Please go into the Control Panel, Add/Remove and for now remove ALL versions of JAVA

When we're done you can go back and install the latest version but for now please do not install any.

Then run this tool to help cleanup any left over Java

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.

Please download JavaRa and unzip it to your desktop.

***Please close any instances of Internet Explorer (or other web browser) before continuing!***

  • Double-click on JavaRa.exe to start the program.
  • From the drop-down menu, choose English and click on Select.
  • JavaRa will open; click on Remove Older Versions to remove the older versions of Java installed on your computer.
  • Click Yes when prompted. When JavaRa is done, a notice will appear that a logfile has been produced. Click OK.
  • A logfile will pop up. Please save it to a convenient location and post it back when you reply

Then look for the following Java folders and if found delete them.

C:\Program Files\Java

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Java

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Java

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Sun\Java

C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Java

C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Sun\Java

From within IE go to Tools/Internet Options/Advanced and click on the RESET button.

Then launch IE again and click on Save Current Configuration and go to Home Page.

With all other applications closed (Taskbar empty), open HijackThis again

and run Do a system scan only and place a check mark on the following items.

  • O2 - BHO: (no name) - {b0cda128-b425-4eef-a174-61a11ac5dbf8} - (no file)
  • O15 - ProtocolDefaults: '@ivt' protocol is in My Computer Zone, should be Intranet Zone
  • O15 - ProtocolDefaults: 'file' protocol is in My Computer Zone, should be Internet Zone
  • O15 - ProtocolDefaults: 'ftp' protocol is in My Computer Zone, should be Internet Zone
  • O15 - ProtocolDefaults: 'http' protocol is in My Computer Zone, should be Internet Zone
  • O15 - ProtocolDefaults: 'https' protocol is in My Computer Zone, should be Internet Zone
Then Quit All Browsers including the one you're reading this in now.
Then click on Fix checked and then quit HJT

SDFix is a program written by AndyManchesta that can remove many different types of Trojans and Worms.

How to use SDFix

Remove your old copy of Combofix. Click on START - RUN and type in Combofix /u

Then run another round of MBAM updates and scan.

Update and Scan with Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

  • Start MalwareBytes AntiMalware (Vista users must Right click and choose RunAs Admin)
  • Please DO NOT run MBAM in Safe Mode unless requested to, you MUST run it in normal Windows mode.
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Select the Update tab
    • Click Update

[*]When the update is complete, select the Scanner tab

[*]Select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.

[*]When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.

[*]Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.

[*]When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply

    • If you accidently close it, the log file is saved here and will be named like this:
    • C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

Then RESTART the computer

AFTER the reboot run HJT Do a system scan and save a logfile

The post back NEW MBAM and HJT logs in that order please.

Hi,

Followed the above steps.

JavaRa -- no problems.

After resetting IE there were no Protocol entries to remove with HJT, the BHO entry was removed.

SDFix log below.

Combofix /u did not run. ( Windows could not find combofix. )

Shall I download it again and run it ? or manually remove C:/ComboFix/ ?

Hi Mike,

Did you rename combofix? If so use that name, if not then download a new copy and run the removal process.

To uninstall ComboFix.exe
  • Click
    START
    then
    RUN
  • Now type
    Combofix /u
in the runbox and click OK. Note the
    space
    between the
    X
    and the
    U
, it needs to be there.

  • CF_Cleanup.png

  • When shown the disclaimer, Select "2"

Remove this folder C:\QooBox\LastRun if the uninstall instructions don't work.

Then run this tool.

Please
Download
OTMoveIt3
by Old Timer
and save it to your
Desktop
.
  • Double-click
    OTMoveIt3.exe
    to run it.
  • While connected to the Internet, Click on the green
    CleanUp!
button and it will populate a list of items to clean from your system that we used or may have used.

  • It should ask if you want to clean up, select Yes and allow the system to clean up these items.

    NOW
please reboot your computer to finish the cleanup process

How is the computer running now?

Are there still any signs of an infection?

Please update MBAM and do a Quick Scan in each of the user accounts on the system.

Thanks.

Hi AdvancedSetup,

Again thanks for you help and patience.

ComboFix had been renamed. I ran it with the /u arg and removed it.

OTMoveIt3 ran successfully as well.

There are 4 user profiles defined on this box.

There do still appear to be signs of an infection.

2 of the user profiles get DLL illegal relocation error dialog boxes at login, the profile I usually use and another.

The other 2 profiles ( my sons and the last ) do not get those error messages.

But they show other symptoms:

MBAM will not update, and each time it is started all the scan settings have been cleared.

( Udated failed. Make sure you are connected to the internet and your firewall is set to allow MBAM to access the internet. )

firefox runs sometimes -- sometimes it crashes at startup -

right clicking on the start button causes explorer to die and respawn.

the folder options are set to hide system folders/files and when manually changed immediately revert back.

the 5 015 protocol entries found by HJT show when HJT is run under these 2 id's:

"

O15 - ProtocolDefaults: '@ivt' protocol is in My Computer Zone, should be Intranet Zone

O15 - ProtocolDefaults: 'file' protocol is in My Computer Zone, should be Internet Zone

O15 - ProtocolDefaults: 'ftp' protocol is in My Computer Zone, should be Internet Zone

O15 - ProtocolDefaults: 'http' protocol is in My Computer Zone, should be Internet Zone

O15 - ProtocolDefaults: 'https' protocol is in My Computer Zone, should be Internet Zone

"

I have selected them and hit the fix button in HJT multiple times - they entries return immediately.

Going thru the steps you put in post # 11 to reset IE fails to save the preferences.

( status bar at the bottom shows "error on page " )

  • Root Admin

Well that is surprising. Usually a run of Avira along with MBAM can clean up most things, but some of these infections can dig in deep.

Okay please run the following tool and let's see what it finds.

RootRepeal - Rootkit Detector

  • Please download the following tool:
    RootRepeal - Rootkit Detector
  • Direct download link is here:
    RootRepeal.rar

  • If you don't already have a program to open a .RAR compressed file you can download a trial version from here:
    WinRAR

  • Extract the program file to a new folder such as
    C:\RootRepeal

  • Run the program
    RootRepeal.exe
    and go to the
    REPORT
    tab and click on the
    Scan
    button

  • Select
    ALL
of the checkboxes and then click
    OK
and it will start scanning your system.

  • If you have multiple drives you only need to check the C: drive or the one Windows is installed on.

  • When done, click on
    Save Report

  • Save it to the same location where you ran it from, such as
    C:\RootRepeal

  • Save it as
    your_name_rootrepeal.txt
    - where your_name is your
    forum name

  • This makes it more easy to track who the log belongs to.

  • Then open that log and select all and copy/paste it back on your next reply please.

  • Quit the RootRepeal program.

Hi AdvancedSetup,

Thanks for the continued help with this.

RootRepeal crashed during the run. There's an 17.6 K dumpfile :

02/02/2009 08:25 PM 18,024 RootRepeal.dmp

02/02/2009 08:25 PM 153 RootRepeal_crash_020209.202545.txt

Here is the crash output:

ROOTREPEAL CRASH REPORT

-------------------------

Exception Code: 0xc0000005

Exception Address: 0x0040e77a

Attempt to read from address: 0x0281c004

Do you want the dmp file ?

I'm going to restart the scan. If it crashes again I will try running under a different user.

Thanks,

mike

Hi Mike,

I'd like to get a log from another program to see if I can get more details on it.

The hidden file spwe.sys could be legit, but Google and a couple other research sites don't know anything about it so that makes it at least suspicious.

They also don't know about this file \Driver\PCI_PNP6370 which again makes it suspicious.

Files that Google and Anti-Malware sites don't know and their also hidden from the normal Windows API calls is not typical behavior except for security programs and programs like Daemon Tools that try to hide from Games so they can run the games.

STEP 2

Download this tool but don't run it yet. Run STEP 1 first and then RESTART the computer before running this one.

Please download the following scanning tool. GMER

  • Open the zip file and copy the file
    gmer.exe
    to your Desktop.
  • Double click on
    gmer.exe
    and run it.

  • It may take a minute to load and become available.

  • Do not make any changes. Click on the
    SCAN
button and DO NOT use the computer while it's scanning.

  • Once the scan is done click on the
    SAVE
button and browse to your Desktop and save the file as
    GMER.LOG

  • Zip up the
    GMER.LOG
    file and save it as
    gmerlog.zip
and attach it to your reply post.

  • DO NOT
directly post this log into a reply. You
    MUST
attach it as a .ZIP file.

  • Click OK and quit the GMER program.

STEP 1

Your previous version of Combofix.exe, delete it and download a fresh copy.

Download it to your DESKTOP - it MUST run from the Desktop

download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe

subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe

Using your mouse, Highlight and then Right-click | Copy the entire contents of the Code box below, including blank lines

Hi AdvancedSetup,

I ran ComboFix as instructed above, logged in under my son's profile.

ComboFix started up displayed an error message saying it could not create a system restore point

and continued on. I saw a "Completed Phase_xx " messages and i walked away.

The machine rebooted , i logged back in using the same profile and was surprised that ComboFix

didn't start again,....

I ran gmer anyway, and then was having trouble zipping the log file ( No compressed folders option on right click menu ).

I logged out and back in under the profile I usually use.

ComboFix started,...

I let it run ( had to stop the AntiVirus process again ).

rebooted and ran gmer again. I have attached that ( the second log ).

Here is the combofix log:

ComboFix 09-02-02.04 - Megalomania 02/03/2009 8:11:05.2 - NTFSx86

Please uninstall DAEMON Tools Lite for now. It is not Malware but is making it more difficult to track down the real problem.

You can look here if you're having trouble removing the SPTD driver.

Here is another site with information on removal of the SPTD file.

I also see a piece of McAfee running. Please check and Remove all pieces of McAfee AV since you're running Symantec AV.

Also please run this tool.

Click on
START - RUN
and type in
SIGVERIF
and click OK

This is a Microsoft File Signature Verification program that will check some file status for us.
  • Click on the
    START
    button and let it run.
  • It will popup a box when it's done to show the status, you can close that box.

  • Close the
    File Signature Verification
    application.

  • Find and attach the file C:\WINDOWS\
    SIGVERIF.TXT
    to your reply.

  • DO NOT
post the log directly into your reply, attach the file please.

Well that's not good. You have some Microsoft OS files that should be signed that are not signed.

It could be for various reasons but even regedit.exe is not signed. I don't have a box here with SP2 on it but I'll check one from work.

Please run the following again.

Please download the following scanning tool. GMER

  • Open the zip file and copy the file
    gmer.exe
    to your Desktop.
  • Double click on
    gmer.exe
    and run it.

  • It may take a minute to load and become available.

  • Do not make any changes. Click on the
    SCAN
button and DO NOT use the computer while it's scanning.

  • Once the scan is done click on the
    SAVE
button and browse to your Desktop and save the file as
    GMER.LOG

  • Zip up the
    GMER.LOG
    file and save it as
    gmerlog.zip
and attach it to your reply post.

  • DO NOT
directly post this log into a reply. You
    MUST
attach it as a .ZIP file.

  • Click OK and quit the GMER program.

Hi AdvancedSetup,

Attached is the gmerlog.zip.

The FlyakiteOSX package that is installed on this machine may have replaced some ( perhaps many )

of the windows system files. I could uninstall it. I'll do some research at lunchtime.

I have run MS update since it was installed and put on 29 patches, I wonder if uninstalling the flyakiteOSX would roll those changes back or worse create an incompatibility.

I have a SP2 machine at home I could post the signature results from there for comparison if needed.

Thanks,

Mike
