I too am experiencing problems with the latest version (1.60.0.1800) running under Windows XP SP3. I updated from version 1.51.2 (via Malwarebytes automated uninstall/install routine) on two separate PC's, and when the software attemtped to run I received the generic Windows error mesage stating that the application would not run and did I want to send an error report. On one PC, successive attempts to run version 1.60 mysteriously "fixed" itself (although it loads slowly), on the other PC I continued to receive the error message. I ended up uninstalling version 1.60 and reinstalling version 1.51.2 and turning off the "Download and install program update if available" in "settings". This is fine until MB no longer supports this version. I have not tried using mbam-clean.exe as the older version is stable and working...

The mbam-clean.exe, reboot, reinstall 1.60 method should work to correct this issue. It has fixed these problems in most cases.

If you would like to attempt it, here are the steps:

  • Download and run mbam-clean.exe from here
  • It will ask to restart your computer, please allow it to do so very important
  • After the computer restarts, temporarily disable your Anti-Virus and install the latest version of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here
    • Note: You will need to reactivate the program using the license you were sent via email if using the Pro version
    • Launch the program and set the Protection and Registration. Then go to the UPDATE tab if not done during installation and check for updates.
Restart the computer again and verify that MBAM is in the task tray if using the Pro version. Now setup any file exclusions as may be required in your Anti-Virus/Internet-Security/Firewall applications and restart your Anti-Virus/Internet-Security applications. You may use the guides posted in the FAQ's here or ask and we'll explain how to do it.

I have a similar problem, but am using Windows 7 Pro, 64-bit, w/AVAST Free for anti-virus. Malwarebytes (paid) had been running flawlessly for some time. It automatically updated to 1.60.1800, but on restart will not load at all, automatically or manually. I tried several reboots, and also renaming the folder, and reinstalling manually (suggested on another forum). Nothing has worked.

I'd like to try the solution using mbam-clean and re-install, but I cannot find my registration info. Since the program won't open I can't look for it there, either. Is there something else I can try? I have HijackThis on my computer but can't make sense of the results. Thanks!

Hello maybeam:

You may locate your MBAM paid version's ID and Key values in your system's registry at:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

using regedit. Please consider storing these in a safe place for the future. :)

HTH :)

Just a quick follow-up. I did the clean, re-install, re-reg fix and everything seems to be working fine now. :D Thanks to exile360 and 1PW for their help!

Anyone know what caused the original "Malwarebytes won't load after version update" problem? (I'd like to avoid it in the future) :)
