MBAM install goes well, does the update successfully, but then gets "Malwarebytes Anti-Malware has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." and offers to tell Microsoft about the problem.

Trying to run from the desktop icon, or double clicking the program in explorer, or from a DOS prompt, or from a renamed exe file, all produce the same "Malwarebytes Anti-Malware has encountered a problem..." dialog box.

Rebooting in SAFE mode boots up OK, but then running mbam.exe produces same error.

I was able to run rkill.exe successfully, then afterward tried mbam.exe, same error.

Note: there is no obvious sign of infection on this PC. Runs fine, no oddness, feels fast.

I run AVG 8.5.454. I tried turning off the Resident Shield component, then trying again. Same error.

This is an older windows install, so I'm sure there's some crap in here messing me up, no fault to Malwarebytes. But I still hope that someone may have a idea for me to try. Thanks!!

Please do the following to see if it resolves the issue: Post back and let us know please

  • Download and run mbam-clean.exe from here
  • It will ask to restart your computer, please allow it to do so very important
  • After the computer restarts, temporarily disable your Anti-Virus and install the latest version of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here

    • Note: You will need to reactivate the program using the license you were sent via email if using the Pro version
    • Launch the program and set the Protection and Registration. Then go to the UPDATE tab if not done during installation and check for updates.
Restart the computer again and verify that MBAM is in the task tray if using the Pro version. Now setup any file exclusions as may be required in your Anti-Virus/Internet-Security/Firewall applications and restart your Anti-Virus/Internet-Security applications. You may use the guides posted in the FAQ's here or ask and we'll explain how to do it.
