I also had a problem on an XP SP3 machine at work where I use Mabam only for occasional scanning: v1.51 ran perfectly but after the updater installed v 1.60.1800 the app crashed on startup everytime with a Windows error. Unlike the other posters, however, the only background app running is Norton Endpoint Protection which I doubt is causing the problem. Tried downloading the full app and installing over the updated version with no luck, then tried uninstalling and re-installing with the same result. Finally reverted my disk with Go-Back (once THE best a**-saving software for obsessive tinkerers, too bad Norton didn't upgrade it for Win 7) and am back with 1.51. Tomorrow I will try running Mabam-CLEAN file and then re-install and report back. BTW 1.60 running is fine on my Win 7 machine which leads me to suspect an issue with XP SP3.

Have same issue. Uninstalled previous version completely. Then reinstalled 1.6, rebooted. When running 1.6, received same error regarding instruction at 0x016f0ae0 referenced memory at 0x00000000. The memory could not be read.

Thanks for an update on this issue at some point

Great program.

Sincerely

Peter

Other poster indicated running MBAM-CLEAN. That did work and then 1.6 ran fine in Windows XP SP3

Thanks

Peter

Hello eddyg,

I have latest MBAM running on one of my systems that has XP-SP3. So have many others. So no, it's not the fact your running on XP-SP3.

It may be other factors in your case. Review the FAQ at the topmost of this sub-forum http://forums.malwarebytes.org/index.php?showtopic=10138

See if one of those cases matches your particular case or particular mix of security apps.

In your uninstall sequence, did you get & use Mbam-clean utility?

If you have not, I'd suggest one go around using the following sequence.

1) Go to Control Panel and Add-or-Remove programs.

uninstall Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Exit Control Panel

2) Logoff and restart your computer

Get, save, and then run the utility at the following link

http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam-clean.exe

3)When prompted to restart system, allow it to. If not prompted, do a Restart on your own.

4)Now, reinstall Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.

You may download a fresh copy for the reinstall from the following link:

http://malwarebytes.org/mbam-download.php

Download and SAVE it. Do not run it right out of your browser.

Now, temporarily disable your Anti-Virus app.

Now, run the MBAM setup program.

If you have MBAM PRO (have a license) you will need to reenter your ID and Key afterwards to get the Protection module enabled.

RE-Enable your Anti-Virus when done !

IF the issue is not resolved, again, post a new reply here to this topic.

AND be sure to state the name/version of antivirus app

AND name/version if any 3rd-party firewall and /or security app that are active with Windows startup

AND the "messages" shown on install-failure or after-install issue

Good luck.

Note of caution, Camelia. I hope you do not have all 3 of the anti-malware apps all running with startup. Please tell me how you have "configured" those last 3.

FIXED! using the mbam-clean.exe sequence as suggested by Maurice. BTW, I had the same problem on another XP SP3 machine; I still think there is an XP SP3 specific bug in the uninstaller of the 1.60.0.1800 update.

Thanks,

eddyg

SP3 WXP, running Norton Internet Security 2012

Click on MWByte it updated then prompted me to update the version ... that's when the crashes started to happen.

System doesn't lock up, just gives me the message MWB failed to load.

Previous version of MWB worked fine.

I will try the MWBClean utility and disable NAV then try reloading the newest version of MWB again.

Report back,

Cheers,

BYota

Hi, I have KIS 2012 and MBAM realtime........and windows XP SP3, of course. I thought version 1.60 was working fine, but it doesn't. I've run mbam-clean, restarted my system and installed mbam 1.60. The result: my system is freezing several times. I've put malwarebytes files and folders in the exclusion list of KIS, too.

I've installed version 1.51 again.

I'm using Windows 7 Ultimate x64 and, as with others 1.51.2.1300 works perfectly. When I downloaded 1.60.0.1800 the install ran perfectly, it updated it's database and should then have opened the scan module, nothing happened. I then restarted Windows, a warning displayed saying that MBAM Services had an error and shut down. Double clicking on the icon on desktop showed disk activity but Malwarebytes failed to display.

I then uninstalled 1.60.0.180, ran CCleaner and, after reboot, checked registry for any Malwarebyte entry and removed them. I then tried reloading 1.60.0.180 and exactly the same problems occurred. I uninstalled yet again and then re-intalled 1.51.2.1300, all running OK, no problems whatever.

What is wrong with 1.60.0.1800? This version is more like an alpha test version with users as testers. Please sort it out ASAP!!!!

Please do the following, it has resolved this issue for most users:

  • Download and run mbam-clean.exe from here
  • It will ask to restart your computer, please allow it to do so very important
  • After the computer restarts, temporarily disable your Anti-Virus and install the latest version of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here
    • Note: You will need to reactivate the program using the license you were sent via email if using the Pro version
    • Launch the program and set the Protection and Registration. Then go to the UPDATE tab if not done during installation and check for updates.
Restart the computer again and verify that MBAM is in the task tray if using the Pro version. Now setup any file exclusions as may be required in your Anti-Virus/Internet-Security/Firewall applications and restart your Anti-Virus/Internet-Security applications. You may use the guides posted in the FAQ's here or ask and we'll explain how to do it.

I first tried upgrading the hard way, by over-installing (used the full downloaded installer, however, not from within the program), since I don't use ZA firewall (mine's the PC Tools fw, free version), and got essentially the same results as mos others. Installation seemed to go OK, but when I tried starting MBAM disk activity went on forever before I got that crash notice.

Went back and tried it via the suggested clean-and-reboot-first method, and it ran fine after that. I noticed that on the Update tab there's a notice about the new version (expected) and also an "update now" link which I thought unusual since "About" confirms I've got the new one.

Off-topic but interesting: when I did the defs update, I see that's now a good meg-plus smaller than before, which will speed this process up a little. Question - will the incremental-updates feature eventually be extended to the free version, or is it planned to remain Pro-only?

Followed instructions and exactly the same problems after re-installation! 1.60.0.1800 causes MBAM to not start properly, unable to open scan gui and on restart MBAM service says there is a problem and closes. Then unable to do anything with MBAM except uninstall it.

Back to using 1.51.2.1300, which works perfectly!

FAO - using MBAM Pro.

I also suspect this problem with Windows XP caused a friend of mine's PC to fail to start correctly after he loaded the free version, which worked in Safe Mode but would not let him get past the Windows start-up screen returning him to reboot continuously. This is still being investigated.

Why is 1.60.0.1800 causing so many problems? MBAM has always been excellent and has worked without problems until now.

This evening after booting Win7 x64 MBAM came up with the same error message as before, see attachment. I followed the procedures above again and reloaded 1.60.0.180 - this time it updated correctly and the scanner gui started, which it didn't before. Have reset the ignored files and all appears OK.

I have also noted that MBAMService set itself to Automatic (Delayed) and have reset this to Automatic.

Still awaiting results of checks on my friends Win XP system problem, I hope that MBAM is not the cause of his PC failing to restart correctly after running MBAM free in Safe Mode.post-104809-0-03659300-1325373836.jpg
