Problems Installing free version on laptop running XP Pro

I am running the full version without any problems. A friend who has a laptop with XP Pro asked me what they could use alongside Avast antivirus and I suggested they try the free version of Mwb to see what they thought. We registered her ok, received the email and apparently saved the download without hitch. When we tried to run the exe file to instal, we got a series of vb errors, but ended up with an icon. Clicking the icon generated more vb errors. I uninstalled and switched off all parts of Avast (better late than never!) and attempted to reinstal - same result. I uninstalled again and tried to re-download but link said it had already been used and thus no go. Has anyone seen this problem or got any ideas?
