Can't get rid of 5 particular vundo files

Hey all, hopefully someone can help me with a problem I have been having.

Recently, my work computer became infected with Vundo. I think I got the thing from an excel file happy boss, but I can't be sure. When I first got moved to this office, the computer I am using now had NO anti-virus software installed (beyond windows defender), and no anti-virus software running. For all I know, the previous user got the machine infected and simply neglected to report it. Or, more than likely, the machine became infected when I opened an excel file from my boss (before any anti-virus software was on this machine).

In any case, I tried fixing the problem with various programs, and nothing has completely solved the problem. I even contacted the I.T. guy for where I work, and he was shocked to hear that the computer wasn't running any anti-virus software, so he had me install symantec endpoint. He said if I couldn't solve the problem with symantec endpoint, he would just wipe the entire computer clean if need be. However, I don't feel like risking my internet usage at work (by requesting the computer wipe) when I know I have not visited any websites (nor downloaded or installed any programs) that were not appropriate for work. Especially because my job requires me to open up excel files from someone that I am not sure is particularly careful about his own internet habits, I wanted to try to fix the problem before I sent off this computer to be wiped (as there is a good chance that my boss will send out infected files in the future).

A while back, I downloaded the malwarebytes anti-malware software (using the free version), and it found several Vundo files that no other scanners found (including vundofix, windows defender, and symantec endpoint). With that being said, I thought the problem was fixed (and indeed I am no longer randomly getting I.E. boxes taking me to various cell phone ringtone sites, or fake anti-virus software ads).

However, the computer still tends to go very slow at times, and on various re-starts, it will try to open .dll files that don't exist. Also, every few restarts, a scan from the malwarebytes program (which I now use EVERY TIME I turn on the computer) reveals that I am constantly getting the same 5 infected files re-added to my computer. With all of this being said, here are the logs for mbam, and hijack this. Also, those who know how to read these things might notice a lack of information about symantec endpoint running at the time of the hijack this log. This is because I ran the hijack this program directly before and after the mbam scan...but the mbam scan freezes up unless I turn off symantec endpoint...thus it (symantec endpoint) wasn't running when I ran hijack this.

Here are the logs...

This is the pre mbam scan hijack this log..

Start HJT and run Do a system scan only and place a check mark on the following items.

  • O2 - BHO: (no name) - {0B67D659-912B-46C2-90DE-F870DD437BB1} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\iifcaARi.dll (file missing)
  • O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [68c7ebd5] rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\system32\pqxkwwld.dll",b
  • O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-19\..\RunOnce: [nltide3] cmd.exe /C rundll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection nLite.inf,C (User 'LOCAL SERVICE')
  • O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-20\..\RunOnce: [nltide3] cmd.exe /C rundll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection nLite.inf,C (User 'NETWORK SERVICE')
  • O4 - HKUS\.DEFAULT\..\RunOnce: [nltide3] cmd.exe /C rundll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection nLite.inf,C (User 'Default user')
  • O20 - Winlogon Notify: cbXPiICr - cbXPiICr.dll (file missing)
Then Quit All Browsers including the one you're reading this in now.
Then click on Fix checked and then quit HJT

Please go into the Control Panel, Add/Remove and for now remove ALL versions of JAVA

When we're done you can go back and install the latest version but for now please do not install any.

Then run this tool to help cleanup any left over Java

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.

Please download JavaRa and unzip it to your desktop.

***Please close any instances of Internet Explorer (or other web browser) before continuing!***

  • Double-click on JavaRa.exe to start the program.
  • From the drop-down menu, choose English and click on Select.
  • JavaRa will open; click on Remove Older Versions to remove the older versions of Java installed on your computer.
  • Click Yes when prompted. When JavaRa is done, a notice will appear that a logfile has been produced. Click OK.
  • A logfile will pop up. Please save it to a convenient location and post it back when you reply

Then look for the following Java folders and if found delete them.

C:\Program Files\Java

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Java

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Java

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Sun\Java

C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Java

C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Sun\Java

When that is all done and HJT no longer show any versions of Java you can then re-install the latest version

Download and Update Java Runtime

The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 11.

  • Go to http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
  • Go to Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 11 about half way down the page and click on the Download button.
  • In Platform box choose Windows.
  • Check the box to Accept License Agreement and click Continue.
  • Click on Windows Offline Installation, click on the link under it which says jre-6u11-windows-i586-p.exe and save the downloaded file to your desktop.
  • Install the new version by running the newly-downloaded file with the java icon which will be on your desktop, and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Uncheck the Toolbar button (unless you want the toolbar)
  • Reboot your computer

Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading ComboFix to your
DESKTOP
:
how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

NOTE!!:

You must save and run
ComboFix.exe
on your DESKTOP and not from any other folder.

Also,
DO NOT
click the mouse or launch any other applications while this is running or it may stall the program

Additional links to download the tool:

Note:

The
Windows Recovery Console
will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
  • Click
    Yes
to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

  • When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

  • Please post the
    C:\ComboFix.txt
    along with a
    new HijackThis log
so we may continue cleaning the system.

Please download Lop S&D

Double-click on Lop S&D.exe

Choose the language, then choose Option 1 (Search)

Wait till the end of the scan

Post the log which is created: (%SystemDrive%\lopR.txt), typcially C:\lopR.txt

Thanks for the reply. Believe it or not, my concerns are now moot. The computer I am using is to be wiped clean by my company, as the office I am in will now double as a place for public visitor Internet access during the day (before my shift begins). Even if this computer were totally clean and free of infections, they would have wiped it anyways due to the nature of this new "double duty" (apparently they wanted a "fresh" computer for the public to use). Thanks again, and sorry I wasn't aware of this a few days ago before I posted on here. (On the bright side, however, I now know about this site, and the malwarebytes program...which I now use at home!)
