Possible PDF trojan?

Recommended Posts

Hello guys! Thanks in advance for any of the assistance I might recieve (I'm really grateful that help forums like this exist :) )

A couple of days ago when I started up my laptop, Adobe Reader suddenly launched a few seconds before I launched my web browser which was pretty odd because I've never once used Adobe Reader or read a pdf on this laptop before. It has never randomly popped up like this before either. Since I've never used it on this laptop, the EULA popped up instead of the program itself and I immediately declined the agreement.

I scanned my computer with Webroot Spysweeper afterwards and it found a trojan (I know it was troj/PDF but I can't remember the exact name, although I think it was troj/PDFex-et). I did a quick websearch of the trojan name and couldn't find too much on it. I deleted it from quarantine and did a quick scan again just to see if there was anything else and it came back clean. I then updated malwarebytes (it was installed months prior to this if that effects anything)and ran a scan with it as well and that also came back clean. I figured this meant that I was safe.

However, the next time I started up my laptop Adobe Reader did the same thing. I rescanned with both Spysweeper and Malwarebytes and later with the ESET online scanner but all of the scans came up clean. I haven't noticed anything too odd going on with my computer (no bizarre pop ups/redirects/error messages although it's only been a day) besides my cpu shooting up to about 80%+ when the eula pops up. I'm not quite sure why it keeps popping up but the fact that it suddenly started to after I caught a trojan makes me suspect that something is wrong. I considered just deleting Adobe Acrobat (although I think I will afterwards either way) but I figured I should see if there really is anything wrong here and get help before I started messing with things.

Thanks again in advance!

Hi and welcome to Malwarebytes.

I notice that you are using more than one antivirus program (Norton and Webroot). This is very dangerous, as multiple AVs can interfere with one another and actually allow MORE viruses to get through. I strongly suggest you go to Start -> Control Panel -> Add or Remove Programs and uninstall all but one antivirus program.

Please update MBAM, run a Quick Scan, and post its log in addition to a fresh DDS log.

Thank you so much for getting back to me!

However, I actually I managed to fix the issue on my own about a day ago so I no longer need the assistance :)

But thank you for mentioning the antivirus issue to me. I only use Webroot on my system; Norton was an unactivated trial that came with my computer. I wasn't aware that it could cause issues so I went ahead and deleted it seeing how I never planned to use it either way.

And on that note, thank you for the advice and I hope you (and the rest of the staff) have a Happy New year :)

Glad to hear it!

Here's my standard prevention speech:

I highly recommend the PRO version of MBAM; with it, it's likely that this issue would have been prevented in the first place.

Now that your computer seems to be in proper working order, please take the following steps to help prevent reinfection:

1) Download and install Javacool's SpywareBlaster, which will prevent malware from being installed on your computer. A tutorial on it can be found here.

2) Go to Windows Update frequently to get all of the latest updates (security or otherwise) for Windows.

3) Make sure your programs are up to date! Older versions may contain security risks. To find out what programs need to be updated, please run Secunia's Software Inspector.

4) WOT, Web of Trust, warns you about risky websites that try to scam visitors, deliver malware or send spam. Protect your computer against online threats by using WOT as your front-line layer of protection when browsing or searching in unfamiliar territory. WOT's color-coded icons show you ratings for 21 million websites, helping you avoid the dangerous sites:

  • Green to go
  • Yellow for caution
  • Red to stop

WOT has an addon available for both Firefox and IE.

5) Be sure to update your Antivirus and Antispyware programs often!

Finally, please also take the time to read Tony Klein's excellent article on: So How Did I Get Infected in the First Place?

Safe surfing,
