MBAM will not run under default user account

Recommended Posts

Hate to be that guy that signs up just to ask for help, but here I am. :)

Feel free to skip to the ---> Question below

Brief background: I'm computer savvy user that, with the occasional help of the internet, can fix most problems (ironically caused by sticking my browser in places it don't belong on the internet). I'm typically reactive... wait for the wife or son to give the computer coodies, then go to work (update, MBAM, rootkit removers, reboot). This is for a WinXP SP3 machine.

Noticed a brothersoft browser toolbar, a google-esque bing page with search.conduit.com url, and Norton Internet Security running... Clear signs someone was downloading stuff without being vigilant with checkboxes. Uninstalls went fairly smooth but when I went to run MBAM, it wouldn't go. Task manager showed it running for a split second then closing. Dug deeper, safe mode, uninstall, install on another drive, renamed exe, renamed to scr... All the same result. But then I found a suggestion to run under a different, newly created user account. Sure enough, it worked. 9 objects were detected and removed. But after cleaning, updating, and rebooting, it still won't run under the standard account we leave the computer logged in as.

---> Question

What would cause MBAM to momentarily run and quit but only under a specific user? It still runs under the user I created. Both are administrators. My fear is there is some RK running.

If you think you are infected, here are the steps needed to get your computer cleaned....

Please read the following so that you can begin the cleaning process:

Don't use any temporary file cleaners unless requested - this can cause data loss and make recovery difficult
