Google redirect virus and cannot access antivirus sites

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I have the google redirect problem (go.google) and cannot access any Antivirus websites such as McAfee or Trend Micro or Malwarebytes (currently using a noninfected computer to post this). I have run CCleaner and downloaded "mbam-setup.exe" but after selecting the option to "Run" the file, nothing else happens to install Malwarebytes.

I have an expired version of McAfee installed but cannot update it or download a new copy because the infected computer cannot access any McAfee websites. It is always a "Failed to Connect" or "Not Connected to Internet" error even though other websites are working.

All of these issues occur in Internet Explorer 7 AND Mozilla Firefox 3.0.5.

I emailed myself HiJackThis from a noninfected computer to the infected computer and ran HiJackThis. I emailed myself back the HiJackThis log which is attached and also, pasted below.

Many thanks and appreciation for any suggestions or help!

Hello aleina

Welcome to Malwarebytes. ;)

=====================

Transfer these to the infected machine then run them.

Please download DDS and save it to your desktop.

  • Disable any script blocking protection
  • Double click dds.scr to run the tool.
  • When done, DDS.txt will open.
  • Click Yes at the next prompt for Optional Scan.
  • Save both reports to your desktop.

---------------------------------------------------

Please include the contents of the following in your next reply:

DDS.txt

Attach.txt.

================

Download the GMER Rootkit Scanner. Unzip it to your Desktop.

Before scanning, make sure all other running programs are closed and no other actions like a scheduled antivirus scan will occur while the scan is being performed. Do not use your computer for anything else during the scan.

Double-click gmer.exe. The program will begin to run.

**Caution**

These types of scans can produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries unless advised!

If possible rootkit activity is found, you will be asked if you would like to perform a full scan.

  • Click NO
  • In the right panel, you will see a bunch of boxes that have been checked ... leave everything checked and ensure the Show all box is un-checked.
  • Now click the Scan button.
Once the scan is complete, you may receive another notice about rootkit activity.
  • Click OK.
  • GMER will produce a log. Click on the [save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "GMER.txt"
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop.

Post the contents of GMER.txt in your next reply.

Hi kahdah,

Thank you so much for the quick reply.

I have tried what you suggested. Below is the DDS.txt and Attach.txt is attached.

However, I tried to run the gmer.exe and nothing happened after I clicked "Run".

Thanks again for your speedy help!

Hi Kahdah,

I could not download Combo-Fix from any of the links from the infected computer. Finally I downloaded it from a noninfected computer and uploaded it onto a website, then downloaded it onto the infected computer. I ran the program, it restarted the computer and said it deleted some files.

After the Combo-Fix finished, I am now able to access this website, Malwarebytes and also other anti-virus sites such as McAfee. Also, the google redirect problem is gone now from both Internet Explorer and FireFox.

I have attached the Combo-Fix logfile and the new HiJackThis log is below.

Please let me know if there is any more cleaning to do on the system.

Thank you again for your speedy help!

The following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people.

You do not have to have all or any of them they are only suggestions.

This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.

Spybot Search & Destroy-Uber powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.

Spyware Blaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.

Spywareguard-Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.

Windows Updates - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.

Prevention article To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections please read the Prevention artice by Miekiemoes.
