I should have mentioned that I also use Microsoft Security Essentials.

Bare with me for a second and I don't mean to come off as knowing everything BUT I have been working on computers with infections for a number of years and I can't tell you how many times in the last year I have had a client bring me their pc infected with something and they were currently using ( Microsoft Security Essentials ) and it did not do it's job!!!!

One of the first things I do if I get a pc in for repair that has ( Microsoft Security Essentials ) installed is disable it from running THEN I install malwarebytes and run a full scan and 99 out of 100 times malwarebytes finds the culprit THEN I instal avast and run a full scan since malwarebytes in not SPECIFICALLY an anti virus program and avast will catch the rest of any infections if there are any!!

I absolutely think having avast as your antivirus program and malwarebytes as your malware program is the BEST COMBINATION to run on a computer at the moment BOTH are rock solid performers with absolutely the best reviews out there and they are both FREE however I choose the paid/pro versions of both for ultimate protection.

Microsoft Security Essentials is absolutely a worthless program in my opinion.

Just my 2 cents and REAL WORLD EXPERIENCE.

I have malwarebytes free and am about to step up to pro. Do either of these do real time scanning (or otherwise) of incoming and/or outgoing email?

The combination of MSE and Malwarebytes Pro should help so that you stay clean. Malwarebytes is not an antivirus program so you still have to have an antivirus program installed. Malwarebytes will not scan emails or attachments in emails, that is the job for your antivirus program.

Malwarebytes PRO does have real time protection as well as a Web Blocker feature that blocks sites that contain malicious software on them.

I have plenty of customers that run both MSE and Malwarebytes PRO and have been virus free for years.
