When I right click on my icon down in the system tray I am not getting and options as in the menu option, in fact nothing happens!! When I click on malwarebytes via the start menu or the icon on my desktop the program works just fine and opens up. I found a post by another person who had the same issue and they were told to end the malwarebytes process via the task manager then use the icon on the desktop to open up the program then click on protection tab then click on enable protection and this DOES work for a while but then after I restart my pc or just wait a few hours I once again lose the capability of right clicking the system tray icon.

I am running windows 7 home premium 64 bit edition on a new computer and I am virus / malware free and have NO other issues with any other software. Can somebody tell me whats going on or is this a possible BUG in the malwarebytes software that needs to be addressed in the next build/version.

THANKS!!

Please try the following:

  • Download and run mbam-clean.exe from here
  • It will ask to restart your computer, please allow it to do so very important
  • After the computer restarts, temporarily disable your Anti-Virus and install the latest version of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here
    • Note: You will need to reactivate the program using the license you were sent via email if using the Pro version
    • Launch the program and set the Protection and Registration. Then go to the UPDATE tab if not done during installation and check for updates.
Restart the computer again and verify that MBAM is in the task tray if using the Pro version. Now setup any file exclusions as may be required in your Anti-Virus/Internet-Security/Firewall applications and restart your Anti-Virus/Internet-Security applications. You may use the guides posted in the FAQ's here or ask and we'll explain how to do it.

I would like to TEST my malwarebytes to see if I get that POP UP window down in the system tray that says MALICIOUS WEBSITE BLOCKED is there a safe site to go to that will trigger my malwarebytes to block the ip/website then visually tell me it did so via pop up window from the system tray icon??? Then I can check my log to see the results also.

I have an occasional issue with my tray icon as well, but not same problem as you. My tray icon just disappears on occasion and I have to reboot or stop Malwarebytes via TaskManager and restart program to get it back. It's always still running in TaskManager though, so must be still running, just tray icon is gone somehow.

Actually, doesn't just happen to my Malwarebytes tray icon, but all 3 of my program tray icons set to 'always show'. The 3 are: Malwarebytes, Avast6 & Astra IM. I'm thinking mine is more likely a Windows glitch than a program, malware or virus problem though. Or possibly a conflict with my Windows settings and/or other software I have running.

If it keeps going away then you may want to double check your Anti-Virus exclusions and/or any other script blocking tools like Spybot's Tea Timer

I am not running spybot and have double checked all the exclusions, so far nothing has helped BUT when I restart my computer I do regain control over the icon but just for a short while.

Also I did not mention this but the pop up notifications about automatic updates and websites being blocked also do not work along with right clicking the icon.

I hope somebody can continue to help me with this matter. Thank you for your time.

I have been in contact with malwarebytes support via email and this was there last e-mail to me concerning my RIGHT CLICK ISSUE. See thread here >>> http://forums.malwarebytes.org/index.php?showtopic=100541

This is actually an issue with Windows and how it handles the system tray in shell, we have no permanent fix for it.

The only way to resolve it is to open Task Manager (CTRL+Shift+Esc) and end the process mbamgui.exe then open Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and click on the Protection tab and check the box next to Enable protection module.

However, more importantly, protection is not compromised, everything will still run as it should, that much the QA team has figured out***

So I have been sitting here the last few days just stewing in my own juices wondering if I am STUCK with this problem forever or will microsoft come out with a fix? because according to tech support my issue is a windows issue and not a mbam issue. It was nice to be able to right click my icon and have those options available it was nice to see the mbam popups from the icon when ever it auto updated or blocked a threat but of course all those functions are gone.Yea I am just a little upset!!

If you restart your computer 99 times out of 100 it will once again work. Just seems to be something odd that happens to it sometimes.

EVERY time I restart my computer it ALWAYS works but only for a few minutes to an hour or so then it ALWAYS stops working.

  • 3 weeks later...

Please do the following:

Create a Batch File:

  • Please copy and paste the following text exactly as written into notepad (not wordpad or any other text editor):
    @echo off
    reg query HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced /v EnableBalloonTips>"%userprofile%\desktop\info.txt"
    "%userprofile%\desktop\info.txt"
    del /f /q "%userprofile%\desktop\info.txt"
    del /f /q %0

Once you've done that click on File and select Save As...

  • In the Save dialogue box click on the drop down menu next to Save as type and select All Files
  • Name the file GetInfo.bat (the .bat extension is very important)
  • Save the file to your desktop and double click it to run it.
  • Once it finishes it will open the file it created in notepad, please copy and paste the file's contents into your next reply.

Note: If for some reason that batch file does not work, then you may instead download it from the attachment in this post. Just save the zip file to your desktop, extract the file to your desktop, then double-click on it to run it.

What EXACTLY will this procedure do? What will it reveal about my computer?

The following will change the value data for EnableBalloonTips to 1 instead of 0 so that balloon tooltips will be displayed for your tray icons (including the IP block notifications for Malwarebytes Anti-Malware).

Create a Batch File:

Note: If the last batch file you tried to copy/paste (the GetInfo.bat in my previous post) did not work and you had to download it to get it to work correctly, then you need to download and run this one as well instead of using copy/paste.

  • Please copy and paste the following text in the Code box exactly as written into notepad (not wordpad or any other text editor):
    @echo off
    reg add "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced" /v "EnableBalloonTips" /t REG_DWORD /d "1" /f
    del /f /q %0

  • Once you've done that click on File and select Save As...
  • In the Save dialogue box click on the drop down menu next to Save as type and select All Files
  • Name the file EnableBalloonTips.bat (the .bat extension is very important)
  • Save the file to your desktop and double click it to run it.

Restart your computer once that is done.

Once that is complete, attempt to visit iptest.malwarebytes.org and verify that balloon tooltips are now displayed for IP blocks and let me know if your right-click menu still fails to function after you get an IP block.

Thanks :)

Everything worked properly SO FAR, I have attached a video and will report back later if I loose my pop up's or right clicking ability. THANKS!!

Excellent, yes, please let me know :).

Honestly, I've not seeing balloon tooltips being disabled cause the behavior you described, but when you explained it in your video about the IP block tooltip not showing up, and that afterwards the tray menu would quit working, it made me think that perhaps on your system for some reason, having balloon tooltips disabled may somehow be causing the menu to quit working after a balloon tooltip was triggered.

Well I hope this fix continues to work, you don't know how frustrating it can be when the software that you like is not working properly, I am very happy that we have seemed to fix my very annoying problem, if I could give you a pay raise I would!!! ;)
