  1. [reposting from Malwarebytes 3 Support Forum, summary below followed by the info you requested] I had issues with my WIn7 Pro SP1 64-bit laptop (an HP Envy 15 Notebook, i7-4720HQ) suddenly having the network stop working and the entries in DeviceMgr seem corrupt, so ... 1. Booted into Safe Mode (no networking) 2. Tried to run MWB 2.2.0.124 (last version I had on this older laptop), it failed with Couldn't open proc 406:120 3. Tried MWB uninstall, also failed with similar error 4. Copied mbam 3.5 install, and various clean/support/check utils from a USB stick (I downloaded them on another PC that is fine) 5. Ran both mbam-clean-2.3.0.1001 and mb-clean-3.1.0.1035, both completed fine. 6. Checked certmgr.msc, no MWB-related Untrusted Certificates present 6. Tried to install mb3-setup-consumer-3.5.1.2522-1.0.391-1.0.5889 7. Got similar error (attached setup #001 log and error details dialog contents). mbam-35-setup-error.txt Setup Log 2018-07-17 #001.txt ------------------------------------------------------------------------- [Trusted Advisor FIrefox suggested I run Malwarebytes Support Tool] In Win7 Safe Mode (with no networking or command prompt) ... I ran the .zip version of mbar.1.10.3.1001.exe, after running it on another Win7 64-bit computer with network access to update databases to v2018.07.20.1 and copying the whole mbar folder onto USB to get it onto the affected Win7 laptop. It gets a 'Failed to update(1)' message on startup due to no network I am assuming, but the Scan seems to run to completion. Files attached. Addition.txt FRST.txt
  2. Greetings, I have recently noticed that I believe that there may be a virus on my PC. How do I know? Well, I was playing an online game and I noticed I wasn't getting my usual FPS which is 75. Instead, It has been changing between 40-50. SO I decide to open task manager and I see the CPU is around 90%+. It then drops straight after. I look on my browser and I see that the game is running at 75 FPS. When I close the task manager the game goes back to around 40 FPS. At 1st I thought it was Malwarebytes Ant-Virus as it seemed like it was causing it with high CPU Usage. I proceeded to uninstall it and it seems like it wasn't. I run AdwCleaner, says no elements found. I run my Anti-Virus, no threats found. So I'm confused as to what to do. All help appreciated.
  3. Salutations, I recently discovered of an attempted intrusion by a variant of the Kotver Trojan. You can find all of the relevant details here (this includes logs from MBAM, HitmanPRO, FSS, FRST, and Kotver itself). According to the technician assisting me, he believes it originated from an exploit ad on a web page or something similar.[1] This reinforces my initial suspicions that WinRAR is the culprit. For some time now, the application has been generating advertisements to convince you to buy a license of their product once the evaluation period has ended (AKA nagware). Malwarebytes' has warned me of this in the past, but the utility of the application outweighed the risks of this so-far benign problem. What further steps should be taken to ensure that there are no remaining remnants or accomplices remaining? Current security arsenal: I operate strictly on a whitelist-as-needed basis both at the system and browser-level. All files expressly downloaded by me are subject to testing in a secure virtual machine prior to execution in a production environment. Apologies for the long rambling, but I want to be as thorough as possible. Any suggestions to further enhance security in a Windows environment would be greatly appreciated.
  4. Hello, I wasn't exactly sure where it was appropriate to post this, but I believe I have stumbled upon a false positive. Upon booting my PC, MBAM's daily scan informed me of a Trojan.Kovter in AppData\Local\Temp. In response to this, I ran a deeply thorough scan using MBAM, HitmanPRO, FRST, and FSS with no detections. I also went back and verified the processes running in Process Explorer, since I regularly check what's running on my machine anyway. Nothing about my computer use has been out of the ordinary for this to occur, so I have hypothesized two possible scenarios: A) A false positive B) WinRAR's license advertisements have delivered a successful payload. Scenario B sounds highly unlikely since this has been ongoing thing for some time and I have yet to notice anything outside the ordinary. The following is enclosed with this post: HitmanPRO: Default Scan log; free one-time scan. FRST: The FRST.txt and Addition.txt The following parameters have generated this log: Whitelist: Drivers Internet Processes Registry Services Optional Scan: Addition.txt List BCD 90 Days Files FSS: FSS.txt The following parameters have generated this log: RpcSs and PlugPlay Internet Services Security Center/Action Center System Restore Windows Defender Other Services MBAM: The initial log which triggered the alert, the thorough scan conducted thereafter, and the latest real-time protection logs against the IP's displaying the advertisements (I have others from previous instances of when I used WinRAR, but as I mentioned, up until now it has been benign). For all of the above (MBAM) logs, I have included both the text and xml formats of said logs. I was going to also upload the file in question to VirusTotal as an additional verification, but I decided against it due to the ambiguity of its threat status. Logs.7z
  5. Hi there, good MBAM folk :-) PC, Windows 7 Home Premium, 64 bit. I have chosen NOT to install the Windows Updates - this may/may not be relevant. Malwarebytes Free, Avira Pro. I first noticed there might be a problem when I was attempting to download regular definition Updates for Malwarebytes. The download could never quite complete - it froze up 3/4 of the way through. Same result after several attempts. I also noticed the internet was running very slowly (and normally it's pretty quick). Another change in behavior. I uninstalled Malwarebytes using Control Panel. I also downloaded the mbam-cleaner file from the MB site. BUT I was unable to open this mbam-cleaner file beyond the Run window (which I clicked), only to get the error message "mbam-cleaner.exe is not a valid Win32 application". Same result when I tried to run rkill - same equivalent error message: "rkill.exe is not a valid Win32 application". Definitly something is awry. These are very likely to be good files, and something is choosing to block their opening. I've never seen this error message before. I have made no changes whatsoever to my registry or startup - nothing at all. Otherwise the computer still appears to be running as it should. I am writing to you from my laptop. Any wisdom very much appreciated. All warmest wishes, Ralph
  6. Hi, I've used MBAE for a while now with Avast! Free on my Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit machine, and I'm having some very weird Chrome crashes, without any malware. (I already went through the works and checked for malware with multiple products and came up empty) (Heads up: sorry for the lengthy post, thought you should know the whole story) After every long(ish) browsing session, I had Chrome beta (v40) crash when I exited the browser. I didn't mind much, because I was shutting down anyway, but one day I broke and opened Visual Studio for debugging. It was an Access Violation, and at first, it seemed like an extension bug, so I uninstalled it. Then another extension "caused" the crash. I noticed they were the only two extensions that needed full page access -- and I had a beta feature turned on that restricted full-page access -- so I thought it was related. (According to the stack trace, the crash occurred when the GUI tried to draw the extensions' icons and they were the only two extensions with icons in the address bar that weren't supposed to have one. (That's where full-page access is enabled) After disabling that feature, it seemed like it was OK again -- but then random (after about an hour) crashes started appearing, this time due to an Invalid Handle being closed. Chromium wiki says this points to corruption (without any actual handle bug), which sounds about right because my stack looks exactly like the second example. (Except "ntdll.dll" had called the exception, not any debug function) My point is: I've disabled MBAE about 20 minutes ago and I've had zero crashes so far. I noticed the known issues have nothing on Chrome x64 or Avast, but is there any chance of an incompatibility here? I'll wait until the hour passes and see, but so far it looks like MBAE is the culprit.
  7. Hello I unfortunately came across a Trojan.Agent.CK infection yesterday while doing a routine scan of my laptop using Malwarebytes. It didn't pick this up during a quick scan but during a full system scan. There was just the one entry and I put this in quarantine to check what is was, deemed it as nothing important and then deleted the item. After rebooting, I then ran a quick scan which found nothing and my laptop appears to be running fine. Is it necessary to carry out further checks to see if the problem has been completely removed, or if it has caused some unseen damage to my system? Many thanks in advance.
  8. Hello everyone, Newbie here.. So I installed originally installed the free version of Malwarebytes because I've been having an issue obviously with some form of malware installed on my computer, duh. I came to the exact same conclusion where I could not login to my profile unless it was under safe mode so I restored the computer to a previous point where Malwarebytes was not installed and everything was back to normal. The definition of normal being that everything worked correctly including my sneaky ninja @$$hole malware buddy still lurking in the shadows and popping up random ads whenever it so pleased. So then I read somewhere on this forum that it is much easier to get support if I just went PRO. Long story short, here I am. I'm back with the exact same problem except this time I have proof of ownership and hopefully someone here can help me actually get back into my computer! As I read on the "I'm infected - What do I do now?" page, I downloaded both of the DDS files and here there are.. 9. Hello everyone--- My friend relayed me to this site...I have been trying for 3 months now to get rid of this virus I contracted on my laptop. My laptop is fairly new so it's not worth getting a new one, however, i'm in college and don't have the $200 to fork up to bring to Staples to have them wipe out my laptop. I believe I contracted the Win7 virus back in Nov....i've done some reasearch on this virus and have tried mulitiple ways to try to get rid of it; i tried adding antivirus software (norton, sophos, and microsoft security essentials...nothing worked.) These are the symptoms I get: when I put my computer in hibernation/sleep mode it automatically shuts down. When I search something in google and click on the site I want to be on, I then get directed to a phony site when I click on the site I want to be on. Then constantly I'll see msgs like "out of memory at line: 7,8. 11,etc i've done the research for thsi virus multiple times, i've also tried over the last 2-3 months to install any antivirus that i can get my hands on for free (ive tried norton, sophos, microsoft security essentials...none of them will stay on my laptop) last but not least, after my laptop randomly shuts down, when I restart it, the computer goes into "system repair" mode...I checked the notes before relogging on and it said the C drive is corrupt. One more thing, sometimes I get funny messages that pop up like "msg from winnicade" I'll check on here from time to time, but if anyone has any advice please emaIl me (no spam) at: I really need this laptop for school and it will be a real nusicance if this stays infected! THanks to all for reading this have a blessed day!
