  1. I don't see any EDIT button here, so a string of posts. I just went to safe mode and things don't get hung there. Msconfig came up, defrag actually started to analyze (dfrgntfs.exe), nvidia installer works there. Strange. Other setup.exe files do run in normal operation, I don't know why nvidia's doesn't. Also I got the folder that the dll backup is in confused. I was looking at windows\system\dllcache with the 3500 files, but I don't think that's where the files are backup with sfc. While sfc was running, they were being copied to windows\lastgood\divercache (I think) and there were about 280+ files there while I was watching, but now I can't find "lastgood."
  2. Also, I think I confirmed at one point that these do work in safe mode. One thing that got stuck was nvidia's driver update, and I think I went into safe mode to try, and I could run the setup there. I will check now if this was indeed the case and other things, like msconfig, do come up there.
  3. You are right, I cut the description short. I use XP SP3. I did run sfc and it copied a bunch of files from the cd to dllcache. I had about 50 there before, now I have 3500. Maybe it copied the entire i386, I am not sure. Anyway, I also use MBAM, WinPatrol and Avast. I also use Zone Alarm and Ghost. I don't think I have malware, but I did have malware before- several times- and got rid of them with the help of MBAM. For example, system restore no longer works, so I got Ghost and turned off system restore. There may be some residual damage from those days. Some things just don't launch properly. After revving up to a certain memory usage, they stop at 0. I decided to defrag, and the windows own defragger would hang after I clicked analyze or defrag. As I said before, I can work around these, but I am worried I will run into something critical. Thanks for the suggestion. If you have any other thoughts, I'd love to hear.
  4. I've noticed that some of my programs don't start. When I open the task manager, I see their line that shows some sort of memory usage and 0 CPU activity. If I watch the task manager as I launch, I will see activity until their memory usage gets to a point and then it will stop there. Applications that fail to launch are an eclectic group. ACDSEE has this issue and if I terminate the hung application and retry, after a few retries, it may start. I thought maybe a faulty installation, but I reinstalled several times. Also MSCONFIG is another one that hangs and never comes up; I did not install that. I'm worried one day I'll run into something critical that won't start. I don't think this is malware related- I scanned my system with both Avast and MBAM and things look good. I am thinking that some critical system file somewhere got corrupted or something. Anyone with any ideas?
  5. If speed is important, how many layers of real time protection tools would be too many? I have an XPS 1530, which has a 2.4 dual core with 3 GB ram. I use XP. I currently have Avast, Zone alarm, Win patrol, MBAM. I used to also have adaware and spybot's resident tea time, but I took those off. Will those first four all running at the same time cause too much slowdown? I also have many other resident programs running, like phrase express for text expansion, google desktop for indexing and so on. I don't want to slow the system too much by having a multitude of programs constantly scanning every file. How many tools simultaneously do you use?
