  1. Is Malwarebytes Anti-Malware not an anti-virus program?
  2. I have resolved this issue, but I was a little surprised that it happened at all, so I'm posting here to see what others have to say. I use Chrome as a browser and was reading a page today when I got a pop-up, complete with audio, telling my my computer was infecting with adware and to called Microsoft at a given toll-free number immediately. Of course it was a phishing scam. I had to turn my computer off the hard way, because the pop-up prevented me from closing the browser. I restarted in safe mode and ran a scan. Nothing found. I restarted in regular mode and declined the browser's offer to restart where it had left off. I ran a scan again - nothing. I have Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Premium and the free version of Anti-Exploit. Was one of these supposed to stop the phishing scam, and if so, can you suggest why it did not. I confess I'm not always clear about what kinds of malware these programs are supposed to stop, so I'm curious. I used to use No-Script to stop stuff like this when I used Firefox; I suspect it would have stopped this pop-up from taking over. However, they don't make No-Script for Chrome and there are very mixed reviews for similar programs that are available for Chrome. Do you have any recommendations along this line? Thank you!
  3. McAfee doesn't have a script blocker. Even if it did, I've been running both McAfee and NoScript for years now and never had a problem. I wish I knew how to prompt the icon to appear, because then I wouldn't have to run the browser in Safe Mode for a long time.
  4. I do use Firefox, but any time I close it, as I would have to in order to start it in Safe Mode, the icon disappears. So I would have to operate in Safe Mode for a number of hours, hoping a script stops running, in order to have any chance to see if it comes back in Safe Mode.
  5. Yes, the weird icon appeared on the toolbar again shortly after the thread was closed. I'm not sure what else to do. I have a script-blocker, NoScript, and since the icon appears after the browser stalls and gives a "script on the page has stopped running" message, I've also posted in their forum. Any other thoughts?
  6. Yes, Kevin, that's fine; if it pops up again, I'll post in this same thread. Thank you again for your help!
  7. Thank you! I've uninstalled version 25 and updated to the new - interestingly the Java site wasn't able to verify if I had Java, either before the uninstall or after the reinstall. I seem to recall this from the last time I tried to use that feature - maybe my firewall blocks the function? Anyway, the Lego has not reappeared so far, but I will keep you posted.

  11. A couple of times in the last few days, a strange icon has appeared on my toolbar. I don't know what it is that triggers it to show up. I'm posting an image here to see if anyone recognizes it and can tell me what it augers! It's the little black and white icon (looks like a malevolent Lego) between the Firefox and the McAfee icons bottom right. Although it has an X in the upper right corner, clicking it does nothing. I can close the browser and it will go away for a while, but eventually returns. I've run a quick Malwarebytes scan, which shows nothing. I'm also attaching the logs from running dds.scr One of your Forum Community Managers has looked at the logs and doesn't see anything amiss (https://forums.malwarebytes.org/index.php?showtopic=134855#entry741822). The only thing I've noticed since this icon began to appear is that occasionally the browser will stall momentarily and eventually a pop-up window will appear with a message that some script has stopped running and would I like to wait for it or cancel. I cancel and things go back to operating normally. Any ideas for me? Thanks! dds.txt attach.txt
  12. Hovering over the icon doesn't reveal anything, and left-clicking over it yields the same menu you would get regarding the various toolbars you have available,so essentially it's just as if the icon weren't really there at all. The only odd behavior I've noticed since this began appearing is that sometimes the browser will stall momentarily and eventually a pop-up window will appear with a message that some script has stopped running and would I like to wait for it or cancel. I cancel and things go back to operating normally. If the icon appears in conjunction with bogus updates, wouldn't that seem to indicate that there's something resident on the computer that shouldn't be there? And thanks to both of you for your interest and willingness to help me with this baffling thing!
