  1. Excellent, the beta works, unfortunately, the virus did make the jump, but as always, MBAM's taken care of it. Thanks for your support and the great product, feel free to close this thread.
  2. Missed the part about the beta version, trying that next. Also, in answer to your question of internet, I have a 7MBit/s DSL connection.
  3. Coming to you from safe mode right now. Malwarebytes still behaved the same upon attempting to open. Did an uninstall, mbam clean, and reinstall from safe mode, everything still behaved exactly the same.
  4. Sorry, the comment about not having AV wasn't about having an aversion to using it, just to clarify that it wasn't a conflict with antivirus software. Just copied over the rules.ref from the laptop, that didn't do anything, rebooting for safe mode and trying that out now
  5. Sorry, was going through your prereqs for the malware forum. Grabbed avira, did a scan, came up clean, so was gonna go on to posting logs and such, but thought I'd check back at this topic first. Even if the infection crossed, it seems unlikely that it would allow MBAM to run correctly on one computer, but not the other, it would either block it on both or neither, I would think. I had already tried removing rules.ref as well and still recieve the expanding variable, and missing file errors. The program always terminates after this, and thus, never has a chance to download a new rules.ref. After this post I"m going to try copying the rules.ref from the laptop. If that doesn't work I'll then try for it working in safe mode, after which I"ll check back here, should be around 20-30 mins tops.
  6. Also note that in the OP I mentioned that there are no other antivirus, etc running on the computer that's giving me the issue.
  7. In the OP you'll note that I mention already having done this as well several times, with downloads from different sources (cnet, techspot, and the installer for MBAM that was on my laptop, don't remember where that came form originally), with no change.
  8. As I said in the original post, I've already run the Fix.bat by exile360, it made no difference.
  9. Ah, forgot to mention, I also tried deleting and replacing the rules.ref file as mentioned in a couple of threads on this subject, this did not produce any change either.
  10. So, I'm trying to install MBAM on my desktop and am having some problems. This computer is normally isolated (used for storage, etc) so does not have any antivirus or anything on it currently. I recently had an infection on one of the laptops in the house, which was removed succesfully by MBAM on that comp, so just in case, I'm trying to install MBAM on this desktop to make sure it never spread over there From Flash drive or File transfer. The install proceeds normally, and then at the end, when asked to update and launch, I leave both boxes checked so it will do so. I click finish and before it starts to update the following error displays: "MBAM_ERROR_EXPANDING_VARIABLES (0, 9)" After clicking ok, it proceeds to update normally, and as the status bar reaches 100% it gives me this error: "MBAM_ERROR_LOAD_DATABASE (3, 0)" It then attempts to load the program and gives me the same expanding variables error as above followed by: "MBAM_ERROR_MISSING_FILE (3, 0 mbamswissarmy.sys) The system cannot find the path specified." Any subsequent attempts to load the program give the expanding variables and missing file errors. I have tried uninstalling, running the mbam_clean utility, and reinstalling as per instructions in other topics on this error, and none of the behaviour changed. I have also tried uninstalling, downloading from the same site(cnet), and a different one(techspot), in case the original download was corrupted, with no change. I've also tried it with the installer from my laptop, which works fine on that computer, but produces the same errors on this one. I have also run the fix.bat from exile360 that I've seen posted in other threads surrounding this issue, with no change in behaviour. I've also tried installing with it renamed to something a piece of malware wouldn't recognize and block (ie explorer.exe), this did not work either. Starting to run out of ideas here, hope you guys have a solution for me. I'm running TinyXP and trying to install version 1.46 (the latest one to my knowledge).
