  1. @ daledoc : naaaa ... yer not too old ... find an "old" comp , slap in a used HDD and load "mint13 w/MATE desktop" . i just got done having a go-around with a laptop that was updated via the "sneaky dl" and in place install . the system was borked after a couple of days ... "roll back" was more like ; roll-over-and-play-dead-for-keeps . i agree ... with MS performing yet another act of seemingly self-destructive tendencies , ya gotta wonder what's in the water at MS in redmond . because , surely , what are the chances of hiring all of the students from mrs.bensons' third grade special needs class , at one time ? "vee haff vays of makink you use our glorious operatink zystems" man , just think of what would have happened if ford had pushed the edsel like MS is pushing WX .
  2. agreed ; wilder and feldman are both great actors and comedians ... there are very few that could take their place ... especially today . gotta give mel brooks credit for being a great writer and and director and comedian .
  3. the old adage is apropos : "too many cooks spoil the broth"
  4. in keeping with the theme of this thread (might have to move it) . this is a bit lengthy but it is a little history to show how and why things happen to certain (!?) users : i worked on a friend's laptop about a year ago (brand new machine) ... it had W8.1 with "classic shell" plus a real AV/AM . she moved to another state and all has been ok with the machine until very recently . she called me and was agitated/excited ... it seems that the machine had crashed and as she needed the machine for her work , she elected to have a guy on her end check it out . he was having trouble with *something* (she is not techy by any stretch of the imagination) so , i suggested that she give the guy my number and call me . in talking with the guy i found out : it had W10 . he was having problems activating windows and MSO (both had been "kicked" as not being correct) . /hmmm ... the W10 issue ... i asked him if he had installed it instead of W8.1 ... he replied that the machine had W10 on it to start with . AHA ! i asked him if he knew (from my friend) when the install of W10 happened ... he replied "about three days ago" . /hmmm ... the cheese it getting binding i told him i could send the original .iso for the copy of MSO but i could do nothing for him on the problem with the COA/key on the bottom of the machine other than to try the "change activation key" and barring that , to call MS$ and pitch a fit . i sent him the original install iso (i was a twofer copy and i had installed the other one in one of my machines) via "dropbox" . he called me yesterday to report that he had used my iso and still the activation problem persisted , and as well as with the key for W8.1 . then he said that he called tech support at M$ and the guy said he had been seeing quite a bit of *this* and activated/resolved both issues after a few minutes . hoo-ray for my friend but she is still out the $$ the guy is going to charge her ... not to mention the possibility of "lost data" .
  5. make and model of comp ? do you have another known good stick of RAM that you could put in place of the current one ? give it a try ... not certain without further tests , however : occasionally bad ram will cause errors to be written to the hdd the hdd is going south the MBR is damaged in/by one way or another (ie : possibly by infection) one of the others here can chime in with further information .
  6. "Just do a web search of the KB###### string and you'll quickly discover if any are related to the Windows 10/telemetry fiasco." i suppose that "fiasco" is a word ... i can certainly think of a couple of others with more verve .
  7. cool ... in the first picture , did anyone notice the "grounding strap" running from the lighting rod on top of the gold leaf covered statue to the bottom of the picture ? in the picture of the opera , i can make out the license plate number of the car , it is impressive what that sony is capable of .
  8. "Windows 10 Fail Update ..." and that is what i read the title as the first time around .
  9. also ... it is against the TOS of this website to disseminate information about such activities .
  10. just curious ... wasn't there an *issue* with IOLO and "system mechanic" > also ... i have had optical drives that would play dvds but would fail burning a cd (plus other sundry issues) ... checked the firmware update and software ... no go . the fix was to replace the optical drive ... 25 bucks and it was a done deal .
  11. i agree ... drop the coinage and buy a SSD (samsung ssds are proven with a good track record) . clone the original drive , and then wipe/format the original after you have proven that all the "stuff " made it over from the original drive . use the hdd as/for data/file storage ... move the non-essential data files (say : videos and photos) by copying them over and then , after verifying that the files are correct , delete the originals . this will free up space on the ssd . don't think twice ... get a decent graphics card (does not have to cost 200 bucks) . this will free up cpu cycles and ram ... it take a fair amount of crunch to support dynamic ram . something to consider ... the settings and the make of AV/AM will impact the performance of a machine . for example , if the AV/AM is set to scan every file before it is opened (including program files) or the data being called for/manipulated , this will slow a machine down . as for the make ... weeelll ... there are some programs that are cpu hogs due to lack of good coding practices (aka : lame-arsed bloatware) . also ... speaking of "bloatware" ... unfortunately most all of the off-the-shelf pcs contain a considerable amount of "fluff and cutesy programs" that really do nothing other than slow a machine down . an example of these are those "let us manage yer power/brightness settings" ... windows has one built in ... why would one need to run another one ? get rid of them . there is a section in these forums that deals with these issues .
  12. "Also my younger brother uses my "rig" to play his games, said that my PC had 100 ping when playing online (I go Ethernet) and then any game he plays the servers say I have 1500 ping." this may indicate that your comp is to "slow" (aka : not enough crunch power) to run games as involved as *doom* and others . other than that , your statement is not clear in its meaning ... information is missing and as such , any comments would only be wild guesses . the first part of your statement may be a cause for your problems (and concern) ... if your younger brother has downloaded any malicious software while using your comp this could be the cause of your problems . sometimes it is best to "use your own equipment" , that way , you know what you have done and are doing with it . this helps avoid bad or ill feelings when the comp is compromised/infected . it is one thing when our equipment gets messed up by ourselves , but it is quite another when it is messed up by someone else .
  13. howdy ... are you certain that it is a FF problem ? no problems here .
  14. in addition ... it is the policy of these forums to avoid any promotion or *hawking* of any specific antivirus .
  15. that may be a "smart rifle" ... but the guy behind the trigger is an idiot .
  16. boats , swimming pools and trophy wives ... things that suck the money out of your bank account .
  17. "and I see the red Caution icon in my Network and Security settings so I click on it and it says that my firewall, anti-virus, spyware, etc are off and my internet security is at risk." "So I go to my firewall and it says it is on and then I go to my anti-virus and it says it is on" conflicting information and changing states are warning flags in my book . personally . i would head over to the malware removal section and start a new topic .
  18. here's the picture to go with that : a word of advice to the novice ... never use a registry cleaner , these can leave you with a non-functioning system . the registry is dangerous ground to be in .
  19. "Trojan Killer wants like $50 dollars to do it." syntax notwithstanding ... these type of programs abound and all fall under the heading of :
  20. additionally ... you might consider getting a different email account (other than yahoo and google) . the spam filtering and *complaint* departments at these email account providers tends be more concerned about what is going on .
  21. turn one at a time or both *off* ... see what happens . (i have all my sounds turned off)
  22. hmmm ... i would play it safe and head over to the removal section . it may be a case of the ol' magician's trick : distraction . while looking at something obvious , you don't see what the other hand is doing .
  23. what ? how does one live without installing the special "security scan" that they are hawking ?
  24. @ OP : DL is correct ... there are many aids for those that have impaired vision . if you use the firefox browser you can download addons called " zoomfox" and "page zoom" zoomfox is great for images while "page zoom" will "blow up" the whole page to any degree of magnification you want and it will remember the setting for each site . access to these functions is via the right click-n-select . i use these two addons every day ... and i have a 32" monitor . if you do use firefox and have not done so already , get "classic theme restorer" from the addons search page in firefox .
