Although officially one is supposed to have a background AV app running as well, how many here have dispensed with it, only using background MBAM? Has anyone had their computer infected, while running it that way? Take that and ask another question please, your original question has been gone over many times.

No, you can use windows defender with you other programs , if you choose to. no harm done, from posted replies, you appear to have plenty of antispyware, which is what windows defender is. a poor one at that, but, use it it so desired, Now as to not using any anti virus program, you should run a free one , matters not which one, but i would use one of something, and if you choose MSE , it will dis-able the windows defender .
