  1. I resorted to a full factory backup and still could not boot. After more searching I found a free program called EasyBCD, ran it and it solved the problem, if only we knew about this program in the first place. Please add this program to your tools list to prevent future grief. Thanks for your efforts.
  2. I ran the Dell DataSafe Restore and that didn't work either. The last two files in safe mode are disk.sys and classpnp.sys, I did a search on classpnp.sys and found a way to boot the computer but I have to do it every time. The temporary sulution is alt f10 at boot and delete the line /NOEXECUTE=OPTION /MININT. After windows loads I get a PDVDDXSrv.exe system error because DCIMAN32.dll is missing. Ran MBAM and it found a bunch of WhiteSmoke stuff, with all the restores I've tried I think we need to start from scratch. How should I proceed.
  3. That didn't help either. Is there a check mbr for dos? Remember the rootkit unhooker never ran successfully before the dreaded bootrec command, any connection?
  4. All important files are backed up and I did not use or have Ubuntu. Since I had access to the files I tried a usb hd to see if dos would recognize it. It did so I transfered the files with robocopy. In the old days I would have needed a bat file and drivers, it was kinda fun using dos commands again. Anyways, what can we do to get this machine to boot. I still haven't tried the bootrec /RebuildBcd switch. Another option on the repair screen is Dell DataSafe Restore and Emergency Backup. My daughter's softball bat is nearby too.
  5. no change, should I let chkdsk run on system restart? Also note that I ran a very long dell diagnostic check resulting in no errors.
  6. after choosing no it asks to be run next time the system restarts
  7. c:\> chkdsk /r The type of file system is NTFS. Cannot lock current drive. Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Chkdsk may run if this volume is dismounted first. ALL OPENED HANDLES TO THIS VOLUME WOULD THEN BE INVALID. Would you like to force a dismount on this volume <Y/N> _
  8. From what I've been reading the bootrec process should have been simple but all it's done was prevent the computer from booting. I can still see files and directorys using the DIR command. I was thinking of trying Ubuntu to get to these files. http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vis...ndows-computer/ Your thoughts?
  9. /fixboot hasn't helped. The bsod error is 07b if that helps.
  10. I followed the instructions for fix mbr operating system found, which said to press F8 and select repair your computer, and type bootrec.exe /fixmbr at the command prompt. It never did ask for a disc and I do have all the options. I can start asking around for one though. We do have access through the command prompt which should help out. There is one switch that I did not try /RebuildBcd.
  11. No dvd but all the recovery options are available.
  12. Dell did not provide a windows 7 dvd, just diagnostics cd which I ran, the repair options show up after unsuccessful boot just like the screens from a few of the links that you sent.
