Thanks for your response and apologies for delay in replying.
I followed your instructions to check the settings (a bit difficult, probably because I'm using 4.0.1). I found that rootkit wasn't checked and I changed it. I did a scan and it found nothing - Report below. The problem was still there but disappeared sometime during the day., perhaps when I rebooted my Surface.
The only other thing I had done was delete reimageplus entries from the registry before I sought your help. It was not listed under Apps/Programs.
Everything seems to be OK today.
