  1. For almost 30 years, I've been building myself the beefiest machine I could afford and then keeping it until I was absolutely forced to build new again (I'm in that process right now). I've had my W7 computer for almost 10 years! My point is that is a long time to build up lots of registry garbage from un-uninstalled programs that don't even attempt to clean up after themselves. At one point, before I broke down and bought Revo uninstaller, I had a regedit file size over 600k. I think I did well when I cleaned my registry. But I do understand what you're saying in the article you wrote. My situation is such now that I don't go exploring in the try-before-buy market anymore. And I do use Revo, so I am uninstalling both CCC and Glary and thank you for your advice. So that's it! (yay) I thank you again and hope you guys don't take it the wrong way when I sincerely tell you that I hope I never have to talk to you again! :) Have a good one.
  2. I've updated and/or uninstalled everything -- (thanks for the list) except for: The FileASSASSIN Download page wants to download version 1.06 -- that's what I have. I have the latest version that is compatible with W7 I clicked the programs "check for update" but nothing happened. I'm not in the mood to worry so I'm good on that. :) Haha I definitely have had this program a long time. It won't even work in W10. I never involve it with the Internet so I'm going to keep it. I don't know any other way to get Moviemaker. Also, I was very surprised that CCCleaner and Glary Utilities gave warning flags. Is it your opinion that they should not be used?
  3. Will do. BTW I just reread a comment above that mentioned FRST64. I have a 64 bit machine but is it really worthwhile to rerun a different version of FRST?
  4. I don't know what all that Asian-looking 'text' is; Google translate didn't translate anything from it. Fixlog.txt
  5. I ran FRST and feel better just looking at all the crap it deleted.
  6. Just for the record and for someone that might be reading this later --- it turns out my problem had nothing to do whatsoever with the Malwareytes program but I am still being offered help by the Malwarebytes community. Thank you for being so generous with your help! Thanks, it would be great if you could get rid of U3 aa9jgpob . Could you please post a FRST download link for me? I have only FRST text files on my desktop and no exe. (I have a 64 bit computer)
  7. Java(TM) 6 Update 26 -- I uninstalled it, thanks You're running Acronis software from 2011 - I only use it to clone my disks for backup and I already had disabled the program and services to not autostart. I'm surprised that it turned up anywhere. I do need it, though. U3 aa9jgpob; C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\aa9jgpob.sys [0 0000-00-00] (Microsoft Corporation) <==== ATTENTION [zero byte File/Folder] -- I searched Windows and the registry and I don't have any form of this file or folder and don't know what or where to delete. I'm not sure what's meant by custom firewall rules. I have many programs that set their own firewall rules during installation. Are those considered "custom"? i.e., Surely FRST is not going to change my firewall to its default Windows install condition?
  8. YES!! I commented out that line in the host file and then updated Firefox and Thunderbird without a flaw! thank you thank you thank you -- problem solved I saw all the other sites that had -0- IP entries, too. I need to find out what did that so I won't have this problem again. Might have been a Firefox addon problem but how come the Firefox forums weren't flooded with complaints about this? It still seems unlikely that my wife's laptop had the same issue immediately after installing the paid version. Malwarebytes has no reason to write to the host file does it?
  9. Here are the new logs. I was surprised to find the clean tool results file and have included it also. mbst-grab-results.zip mbst-clean-results.txt
  10. I did a scan and everything seems to be OK regarding the Malwarebytes program but it doesn't seem that the clean tool could have finished its job without restarting the computer before re-installing. I'll wait a few days to see if the Mozilla programs can perform updates and let you know.
  11. I clicked 'yes' to re-install and the Malwarebytes program opened to begin a scan. BUT, The Support tool never closed and is displaying a message "Installation has been cancelled" "once done it will attempt to reinstall both Malwarebytes and Privacy VPN. and close the X button on the top right for the Privacy install." I don't know what that is about - I didn't see that.
  12. Sorry I've been away from home. I downloaded and ran the support 'clean' tool. I got a popup that said "Encountered a problem during uninstall"... "contact Malwarebytes Support for help." I waited a few minutes then I logged on to this forum and typed the above. NOW, when I look at my computer screen I see the Support tool tells me: All Malwarebytes products have been installed and do I want to now install the latest version. I'm afraid to do that because the instructions page for the support tool says "In the Malwarebytes Cleanup pop-up window, click OK to restart your computer. Once your computer restarts, in the pop-up window, click Yes. A pop-up window appears indicating a Post reboot cleanup. In the Reinstall Malwarebytes for Windows pop-up window, click Yes if you want to reinstall the Malwarebytes app." i.e. (restart the computer before re-installing) What now?
  13. Firefox ESR might reduce the headache with Firefox but I'm having the same trouble with Thunderbird. That's one of the reasons I still think the trouble was caused by Malwarebytes. Again, Is there a Malwarebytes registry entry, data file or log file that could cause this problem? (yes/no)
  14. Thank nukecad As mentioned in my OP, my wife's laptop has W10 (now W11) but I will definitely see what Firefox ESR is all about.
  15. Well, how 'bout that. After quitting Malwarebytes, I received the same notice "Firefox couldn't update manually. Download the new version." After all this time, effort and a previous session with you I can't remember ever doing the obvious to test the problem. (Or maybe I did and don't remember.) My original post post stated "I need someone to advise me what registry entry, data file or log file needs to be corrected to fix this problem. " Porthos, is there a possibility there is a data entry somewhere on my computer that I can manually check? firewall? registry? Might it be productive to send the Malwarebytes log file on my wife's laptop?
  16. I will do that. I have new re-installs now so it might take a day or two to test it
  17. Hi Porthos, I just realized that you gave me the help a year ago. I never meant to infer that Malwarebytes is incompatible with any software. I do think my problem is because of Malwarebytes because: 1. My problem is with both Thunderbird and Firefox which I have taken great pains to completely uninstall and then re-install several times. (As I'm writing this, I cannot send any email through my latest Thunderbird re-install because I get a terse "sending of the message failed" --- just another aggravation to clear up.) 2. You previously informed me that there was a false positive located in my log file that was either fixed or you fixed it. (I can't remember which) 3. I've spent hours searching online for people that have had the same problem but came up almost empty. The couple of similar problems I found went back 5 years or more with causes that are now obsolete. (But I tried the solutions anyway.) 4. My thread on the Mozilla forum came up with no solutions (other than the mandatory reinstall, etc. suggestions) and revealed no other reports of the same problem. 5. The problem occurred IMMEDIATELY on my wife's laptop after installing the paid version.
  18. This is copied and pasted from a year ago on this forum: ************ "March 11, 2021 in Malwarebytes for Windows Support Forum I have Malware bytes paid version and Windows 7. For the last month or so I've been getting popups that tell me "Firefox can't update to the latest version - Download a fresh copy." I've followed that advice twice but still have the same problem. I try to to manually update but Firefox reports that I already have latest version. I've tried various combinations in the "Updates" section of the FF Options menu. I have tried turning off the Malware bytes 'Browser Guard" but that didn't help either. My wife's W8.1 laptop had the same problem with the paid Malware bytes version but her hard disk just fried and so she took over my W10 laptop (that had Malwarebytes free version) that didn't have this problem. When I transferred the paid version to this W10 laptop the same problem has started on it now. Thanks in advance for your help." ************* I Still can't update Firefox and Thunderbird. (I failed to mention in this earlier post that Mozilla Thunderbird is affected too, in the same way.) My previous helper on this forum found a record of a false positive in the Malwarbytes log and suggested I update all of my programs (!?) which he helped me do. I think Malwarebytes is responsible because the problem symptoms first appeared on my wife's laptop when she switched to the paid version of Malwarebytes. I need someone to advise me what registry entry, data file or log file needs to be corrected to fix this problem.
  19. Thanks Porthos, I checked that too. The last version of the "fresh copy" that I installed is 86.0.0 (64 bit) and that's what I have now; so FF hasn't downloaded an update since then.
  20. I installed Thunderbird as you suggested and have received no notices yet, however I got another Firefox notice today. Only difference between now and before is, when I try to manual update in FF the icon changes like it's actually checking for an update, but it still reports back that my FF copy is already up to date.
  21. Firefox seems to be OK but I just got another problem notification from Thunderbird. Any suggestions?
