Hello On my roommates computer because my computer has some serious issues. Basically, if I click on any program the "open with" box appears and asks me to choose a program to use. I went into safe mode but same results. After looking on the internet saw a few fixes recommending going into regedit and changing the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell\open\command default value to "%1" %* but no success with that either. Also, there is no system restore point available (safe mode or regular), it just directs me to the "open with" box. Quick summary of the events leading up to this. Been having random malware problems of late, would run malwarebytes, superantispyware, symantec and all was well. Except I would hear an audible noise as if "windows had problems running something sound" intermittently, which led me to believe some malware was still hanging out somewhere. Kept putting it off for later investigation. Yesterday, got malware, ran scan, removed couple trojans and then turned off computer after reboot. This morning, turn on computer and am in the current situation. More information: I can still open folders for music and pictures. If I play music, after I close winamp I get a "winamp.exe - application error". Not sure how relevant that is but thought it might be useful Just to restate, I am using a different computer right now. Any help would be extrememly appreciated. Thank you Justin

Thank you for the fast reply. Very true that the messages from McAfee could be real. Here they are 1. "McAfee Security Center" header; Some McAfee Security Center components might not have been installed or launched properly. Restart you computer to fix this. If this message appears again after restart, please reinstall McAfee SecurityCenter" 2. Same header; Some components of ActiveShield are either missing or might not have been installed properly. I tried to delete McAfee but kept getting error reports; I could delete Norton but did not because I feel like the McAfee system is part of the problem. Maybe just overly paranoid. I did restart the computer to see what would happen and all is well except for those two McAfee pop-ups that appear every 90 seconds or so. I also tried to delete McAfee again after the restart but got the same error message. Should I go ahead and delete Norton and leave McAfee or . . . ? Thank you Justin

Thank you. I tried your first step (changing to auto detect settings on firefox and ie) and I was able get the malwareupdates. However, I ran it with the updates and it did not find anything - but I am still receiving two fake McAffee security center pop ups routinely. I removed Adaware and attempted to do the TeaTimer removal but I do not have spybot search and destroy which the removal instructions are worded for. Much appreciated Justin

Hello Pretty sure I was infected by Windows Defender (maybe something else though). Ran malware bytes but could not update. I tried the troubleshooting ideas (firewall, etc) but still can not update, which I feel is because of the infection.
