thank you exile360. Your response is valid. However, I have encountered new and unacceptable behavior as a result. When I right-click on the tray icon and select Quit Malwarebytes the UAC prompt appears to request if I want Malwarebytes to close. Really? How to resolve please.

I have been using the free version (and yes, I have deactivated the 'trial') for years and now the new version is attaching/remaining in the system tray after I have completed my scans and closed the app. I have disabled all relevant settings including the windows startup and the issue continues. Not only that, but if I do not manually quit the app via the tray icon and shut the computer down. it will reappear there on the next boot. If I do quit it in the tray it will not appear there at the next boot (yes, I shutdown every night and don't need off-topic commentary regarding my nightly shutdown). Therefore, I solicit response as to how I stop this behavior. If it is something permanently to be from now on, could a kind soul provide a link to the last version that this behavior does not occur? -thank you
