  1. Computer, a Dell Inspiron 15z running Windows 7, had difficulty shutting down this afternoon - stayed on "Shutting Down" screen. Next time I tried shutting down, a window appeared with the title "mbamtray.exe error" or words to that effect, with a code below it I couldn't copy before the computer shut down on its own. Also, at the same time, the DVD drive will not open when drive button is pressed - it will open with a paper clip inserted into the hole on the front of it. Looking at another post similar to mine, I've run mb-check - the zip file is attached. mb-check-results.zip
  2. I'm not having any more BSOD's at this point. And since I reinstalled Net Nanny, page loads are faster and the computer is running more smoothly. Thanks so much, John, for your help. I wish you all the best. Jeff
  3. I did a new download of Net Nanny and installed it. I haven't run DV but the computer is running much more smoothly now, and web pages are loading faster. Thanks for your help!
  4. I've finished the 36 hours with Driver Verifier running. I looked under the Windows folder but I didn't find a Minidump file or any kind of memory dump file. So I'm not sure if I have anything to send you. Jeff
  5. It's been running for about an hour. What power setting options should I use? I have it set to dim the display in 10 min, never to turn off the display, and never to put the computer to sleep. Jeff
  6. Thanks for the info about DV. I'm planning to uninstall Net Nanny, and run DV starting late this afternoon. 36 hours will take it to Tuesday morning - I'll have a new minidump file to send you by then. Jeff
  7. No problem with your delay in getting back to me! I appreciate your help! Yes, I do have Net Nanny installed - a very good filter, but I'll uninstall it and then run DV to see if I get any more BSOD's. Then to stop DV, I'll do as you suggest. Last time, I stopped it from Safe Mode. Question: when I run DV, how long should I leave it running to see if I get a BSOD? When I ran it before, the BSOD occurred within about 90 seconds of the main screen appearing. I won't uninstall Net Nanny and run DV till tomorrow. I want to contact Net Nanny and let them know of the problem - can't do that till tomorrow afternoon. Thanks again for your help. Jeff
  8. I just ran Driver Verifier, according to the instructions (as best I could) from the web page you suggested. Computer crashed about 90 seconds after the main screen appeared, then rebooted, then crashed again, then rebooted. After the 3rd crash, I rebooted in Safe Mode and found a Minidump file that I have attached. I then turned DV off in Safe Mode and did a regular reboot. I have more info if you need it. Minidump.zip
  9. Ok, I've attached the file you requested. Hopefully, you can read it ok. As to Driver Verifier, I'll make copies of what little I'm storing on this computer, and then probably run it. System Info 11-30-18.zip
  10. I searched manually for updates several times. Several installed including (which I have opted not to install in the past) optional updates. The exception was one titled HP USB - 12-15-2017 - 44.3.3601.17339. It said Update Failed with error code 800F020B. After updating, each time I tried to open the browser, it said This Page Cannot be Displayed - when I logged off and back on, I accessed the internet fine. Also, I have attached a new copy of the zip file I think you were referring to - hopefully, you can open it. As to www.carrona.org, I have created a System Repair Disk, and I tested it by attempting to boot from it, and I was able to do so, up to the screen with all of the options including System Restore, Command Prompt, etc. But do I really want to intentionally stress - and crash - this computer? Seems a bit of an extreme measure. Let me know. perfmon.zip
  11. I neglected to mention that I was helped by Kevin for another issue with this computer under "Windows Malware Removal Help and Support" that has been resolved.
  12. This appears once every other week or so: "Windows has recovered from an unexpected shutdown." I came up to the laptop, and it was restarting, but no one had been on it. When I clicked on the internet icon that was a frozen circle, it said "Windows explorer has stopped working". I clicked for a solution, and the main screen reloaded. Then the window "Windows has recovered from an unexpected shutdown" appeared. perfmon.zip SysnativeFileCollectionApp.zip
  13. Hey Kevin, I'll do as you suggested and post to the new forum. I just want also to say, that I appreciate your willingness to help out here on the forum. I very much appreciate your knowledge and expertise in helping me, and I'm sure you are similarly appreciated by others you help. On the personal matter I alluded to - on one's faith - if you want to reply off the forum with questions/comments, you can use this email: jsacto@gmail.com. I'll leave it at that. Thanks again. All the best to you, Jeff
  14. I just completed the sfc system scan, and it said "WRP did not find any integrity violations." Jeff
  15. Kevin, Do I need to start a new topic? New problem - actually, this appears once every other week or so: "Windows has recovered from an unexpected shutdown." I came up to the laptop, and it was restarting, but no one had been on it. When I clicked on the internet icon that was a frozen circle, it said "Windows explorer has stopped working". I clicked for a solution, and the main screen reloaded. Then the window "Windows has recovered from an unexpected shutdown" appeared. So I have a new problem. Should I start a new topic with it? Jeff
  16. Hello Kevin, I downloaded and ran Delfix, and I also ran Disk Cleanup. Also, on this computer, running Windows 7 Home Edition, I have: Windows Firewall with Advanced Security, Microsoft Security Essentials (which, on my computer, disabled or turned off Windows Defender), Malwarebytes Free Edition, and Adw Cleaner. I have these same programs on my other (faster!) Windows 7 laptop. I run MSE, MB, and Adw Cleaner regularly, usually twice weekly. Great article "Answers to Common Security Questions and Best Practices" - lots of good info there. I will consider the other ideas you suggested. Thanks again, Kevin. Jeff
  17. Kevin, Thanks for all of your help, and the helpful ideas in your last post. I'll be sure to take a look at them. I wish you all the best, a Merry Christmas to come. Also, if you don't know Christ as your Savior, I invite you to investigate his claims, such as in The Case for Christ by Lee Stroebels. Thanks again for all of your help. Jeff
  18. Hello Kevin, Before completing this topic, please provide your recommendations about: 1. what protective software to have installed (e.g., Malwarebytes, possibly Windows Security Essentials, Adw Cleaner, etc.) 2. what software to avoid (e.g. possibly free antivirus, special toolbars, items claiming to speed up Windows) and 3. good safety practices. Perhaps you would suggest a topic here on the forum or a web site with some of this information. Thank you for all of your help. Jeff
  19. I didn't do it overnight.. but I did it this morning till early afternoon... 7 hours. It froze at 99% step 1, 49% overall after running about 10-15 minutes, and never moved from there. The system is running better. Biggest improvement was after using the Malwarebytes repair tool. Overall, I just wanted to be sure I covered the bases after the big window with all of its warnings appeared on the computer the other day - and Malwarebytes not working afterward. Much better now.

  21. I still have a problem running the Windows diagnostic memory test. When I press F8, under Repair Computer (or something like that), there is a memory test. I've tried to run it twice in the past few days, and it freezes at 21% completion. There is another more comprehensive test, I think just for Dell computers. I can't recall how to get to this test, but when I have run it in the past, it also freezes somewhere in the part of the test having to do with memory. And Disk Cleanup doesn't completely clean files I want to get rid of. The only other concern is a minor one - I wish some internet pages loaded faster, but this is an older computer - a Dell Inspiron 15z 1570 with an Intel U4100 chip at 1.30 GHz - so I can't expect a lot. Thanks, Jeff
  22. Hello Kevin, I downloaded the MB Support Tool, and ran it. It repaired Malwarebytes, and Malwarebytes installed correctly. I then ran Malwarebytes, and it worked fine, except that the whirling arrows stopped for up to 2-3 seconds from time to time. It was able to finish, and it found no threats. Jeff
  23. Hello Kevin, Thanks for your help. Here is the file requested. Jeff Minidump.zip
  24. Hello Kevin, I looked under C:\Windows at the Minidump folder, but I don't see an option to copy it when I right-click or from the menu bar. How do I copy it and then zip it up? Thanks, Jeff
  25. Sorry I didn't reply sooner. The files you requested are attached. Since I wrote the original post, I had the computer in Safe Mode, and it is now able to reboot correctly. It also can now run Malwarebytes successfully. Latest Malwarebytes run showed no infection. I also ran Adw Cleaner and Rogue Killer - neither showed a problem. But also, when I run the Windows memory diagnostic tool, the screen freezes at 21%. Thank you for your help. Jeff Addition.txt FRST.txt
