  1. Do you need a copy of the Mb-clean-results file? I thought not; but I attach it here in case...! mb-clean-results.txt
  2. Thanks, Porthos. Clean and reinstall fine; Web Protection On and staying on; scan runs perfectly. Brilliant service from Forum as always.
  3. Running MWB 3.2.2.2018; Comp pkg version 1.0.212; Update pkg version 1.0.3119 on Win 7 Pro Updated today after a week offline and ran a scan. Computer crashed with blue screen. Restarted, started Windows normally, ran manual scan, blue screen crash again. The only line I could pick up from screen is KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR. Couldn't get addresses. As advised on blue screen, checked for recently installed programs. Discovered that McAfee WebSecurity had installed after my previous scan and before today's. (I have a limited McAfee subscription and have excluded MWB files from McAfee scans and vice versa, but this was before McAfee web Prot installed itself. [Yes, I must have done it inadvertently; but you know what I mean!]) Uninstalled McAfee product. Ran MWB manual full scan OK... EXCEPT that I am unable to turn on Web Protection on Settings>Protection screen. It reads "Starting..." but when I close MWB and reopen, this switch is off and MWB warns me that I am not fully protected. See attached doc. I do need this web protection!! web prot starting.docx
  4. Only just found this... notifications switched off.... doh!! Rootkits sorted... you are right... it was disabled in scheduled scans... several megathanks! Still getting used to the splendid depths of MWB.
  5. We had a merry time recently on #210007 finding out why I couldn't get the rootkits switch to stay on, on my laptop computer. This was happily resolved by clicking rather than dragging the switch on the Settings screen. Just out of interest I checked the last scan log today on my desktop computer. I attach a doc with two screenshots. One shows the Settings tab screen, with Rootkits switch firmly on. However, the post-scan Report notes "Rootkits: Disabled". The Rootkits icon and the rotating arrows appear in the Progress Train while the scan is running. I have the exact same version of MWB on my laptop. It is working fine. Rootkits switch on; Progress Train showing Rootkits icon. Scan reports show that Rootkits is enabled. I would appreciate any comments on this discrepancy.. Rootkits switch on but rootkits disabled.docx
  6. OK... that's it, then. If I had clicked it on rather than tried to drag it on, we could have saved a lot of time! But it does look on-screen like a drag possibility, being a sliding toggle rather than a check box. Thanks again for all the support.
  7. Well, I'm jiggered... You have hit it spot on. Dragging the toggle across is volatile; clicking it into place is permanent. As you no doubt know; it is the same for all Scan options on the Protection tab. Happens the other way around, too: dragging to "off" is volatile, but clicking is permanent. The other toggle switches work differently, presenting a warning when an attempt is made to move the switch to "off"; I guess because of the nature of the changes. But a drag "on" is not volatile. Is it that the rootkits toggle is the only one that is in the "off" position after setup? Although I didn't check it at the time, that's the only thing I can think of which caused the difficulty. I do not know, either, why I didn't think of giving the click a try; but I often find that when I am in a shop, something happens to make my visit a training opportunity rather than a simple transaction... Many, many thanks to all of the MWB folk who have spent time on this. Much appreciated.
  8. You might like to know that while cleaning up my wife's laptop, I noticed that her version of MWB behaves in exactly the same way as mine: the rootkit switch will move, but not stay on when moving between tabs on the Settings screen (or any other move away from Protection tab). She is running version 3.1.2.1733. I don't know whether this is any help. On the other hand, my desktop is running 3.2.2.2018 (as is my laptop) and that does NOT display the same behaviour. Would a FRST and/or a mb-check on either or both of these machines help you in any way?
  9. Re-ran items from log #16. Screengrabs attached as doc; also mb-check zip file mb-check-results.zip log 16 results.docx
  10. Yes, I did. Keen to get this sorted but sm away from my computer till Tuesday. Sorry. I will repeat previous task then and post results, with screenshots so you can be sure.
  11. Ran mb-check a second time, making sure tab is open with with rootkits switch in "on" position. Second mb-check zip attached. mb-check-results.zip
  12. Worked through #16. mb-check zip attached. As it is not mentioned, I did not run FRST... is that OK? mb-check-results.zip
  13. Ah.. I seem to have lost part of the plot. Late-night-itis - sorry. Will work on post 16.
  14. Hello, @nikhils I did what you suggest. in Safe Mode, on the UI screen>Protection, I could not switch on any of the real-time protection. Rootkit and everything else below was on. (see attached doc "Screen In Safe Mode" with pic). This is UI Protection screen. Top switch Web Protection was also impossible to switch on (not in screenshot). I ran threat scan anyway: see attached pic of Progress Train, which is puzzling as Rootkits switch was on but it doesn't show in progress train. Scan says all fine, 334000 files. Back in to full Windows mode: no change in behaviour of MWB. All protection switches come on except rootkits. When I rebooted, computer was very slow and stuck on 100% CPU with MBAMService.exe taking up to 65% of CPU. Rebooted again; back to normal CPU levels. Thanks for your interest and suggestion. Sorry it didn't work. I used Safe Mode with Networking in case MWB needded the connection to scanscreen in Safe Mode.docx. I could do it again in Safe Mode Without Networking if you think it might make a difference. MWB scan screen safe mode.docx
  15. I switched on the rootkit scan and left the screen open. Scheduled scan started. Rootkit was not in the progress train; but I went to the Protection tab and rootkit was still in the "on" position. Scan continued with all other Protections, but not rootkit. As usual, though, moving off the Protection tab in any way causes the switch to go off again.
  16. I am trying in a manual scan; but because the switch for rootkit scanning switches itself off as soon as I leave the Settings>Protection screen, it never scans rootkits. I don't know whether scheduled scanning will do it; but as the rootkit switch doesn't stay in the "on" position, I doubt it. I have tried switching on the rootkit option and then going straight to the scan screen, but it doesn't appear in the progress train and checking back on the Protection tab it's off again. Is there any way I can find out whether rootkits have been scanned, despite the fact that it doesn't appear on-screen? I will set up a scheduled scan for half-an-hour's time and let you know whether scheduled scanning is any different.
  17. Forget the previous post. Forgot to exclude MWB files from McAfee when I reinstalled it (See thread). Back to Rootkits prob only. Sorry!
  18. Errmm... Booted up this morning: Malware protection will not switch on at all... just says "Starting...", but doesn't. Rootkit behaving as before.
  19. Uninstalled McAfee. MWB rootkit switch problem persists. Reinstalled McAfee.
  20. No change, sadly. I have attached mb-clean-results file. I will try unisntalling McAfee. I have my suspicions. mb-clean-results.txt
  21. Done that; thanks for link. No change; switch rootkit on; in Protection tab, as usual; do anything else (e.g. open Application tab instead of Protection tab) and it is no longer on when returning to Protection tab.
  22. Original topic posted 29 August. Satisfactorily solved. Since then I have upgraded Win 7 to 64-bit Pro and completed all current updates. Computer very stable. No CPU% overload as before. Installed 3.2.2 version of MWB. First scan went well. Installed McAfee too and excluded all MWB files from scan as directed; also switched off RealTime McAfee scanning (as I do a regular full scan). Checked settings today: MWB Rootkit switch off. Can reset it; but leaving and returning to settings screen shows it off again. MB check.zip attached. Scan done with MWB open and rootkit switch on. Closing MWB moves switch to off. mb-check-results.zip
  23. Hi, Ron Everything appears to be back to normal this morning. Done a complete MWB scan in 4 mins (took 28 yesterday). CPU% at normal levels. Your collective advice appears to have settled the punch-up between MWB and McAfee, which was at the bottom of it all. I would say that my attempts to complete Win 7 upgrades (ongoing problem) have contributed to the slowdown, and I've suspended that pro tem so I can use my computer rather then wrestling with it. If problems reappear related to MWB I will follow your latest advice and send you the results of another FRST scan. Besy wishes Mik
