  3. No reasonable explanation for SP1 - I was defacto IT at architecture office during SP2 update, and it wreaked utter havoc on 13 systems for days. Key personnel were working from home on laptops, and we did not update for fear of completely disabling office. Since then just never got around to doing it, but now I must. Cannot run a lot of software on SP1 machines. Which brings me to next question - If I delete Java will the new Java, or for that matter CCleaner, Eset and MBAM run with SP1. I assumed MBAM error in the title of this post I was receiving was due to not updating to SP2.
  4. Before I follow all the steps . . . . wscntfy.exe and xmlprov.dll are not available to me, so i googled them to see if I could/should possibly grab them from somewhere else "wscntfy.exe" is the Windows Security Center, introduced in Windows XP Service Pack 2. It displays a tray icon indicating the status of Windows updates, virus protection, and firewall. and i believe xmlprov.dll ws also released then as well I am running SP1 May this step be skipped?
  5. Thank you thank you thank you - you are indeed a deity I am noticing something odd with Firefox - it will inexplicably run the CPU from 50% to 100% without reason Combofix also had to install the MS Recovery Console, which seemed odd. However I am not complaining. 6. If there is anyone available, may I request a review please. My apologies for asking, as I know you are all very busy. I have been able to figure a workaround for the past 2 days, but this morning I receive this pop up [application location and name] is not a valid win32 application I am only able to access IE which makes me very nervous at the moment as I imagine all kinds of creepy crawlies infestation. I know for a fact that I had windows polic pro but the associated files seem to have disappeared pump.exe. is still present and load through a wuauclt.exe and srda64 (sic) all of this is further complicated by the inability to get MBAM running, and shutdowns due to overheating during spybot scans at this moment I am only able to access internet through IE
  7. I will resist the temptation to post every little new nugget of info I uncover. If nothing else, this Police Pro has certainly caused me to discover some great new tools. AutorunS is the coolest - though I have to admit it is a struggle with the devil not to go in there and just start whacking away. But at least now I have an idea where the problems are. Fixing them - a whole world of question marks. Thanks again for advise
  8. Did I post in the wrong place? Posted there because I'm a bit discombobulated - I cannot get any of the malware tools to work, and not because of the virus So I posted an HJT log instead I thought I might have been passed over because of that (not following the instructions)
  9. Huge apologies for asking a question I know must have been asked a few million times How long can I expect a malware post review to take? I searched forums but clearly do not understand how the search engine works - seems to give me the same nonapplicable results every time Or maybe it's the google redirect
  10. Thanks FF Already did it in the middle of the night last night. Post is titled MBAM scans but runtime error 93 But I think I'm screwed as all the anti malware software appears to need SP2 minimum. Lack of sleep apparently encouraged my to think that updating before the virus is vanquished was a good idea Thanks again - I will wait patiently for a reply from HJT logs
  11. Thanks for the responses So here is my new issue - went to Control Panel - System to try and enable updates to make sure I have everything needed before I do update And system will not left click open -I get a pop up with Exporting your private exchange key in the header asking for CryptoAPI Private Key and saying an application is requesting access to a protected item I kill pump.exe. in process explorer and the pop up shuts down but System dialog box does not come up I somehow got the computer manager up by right clicking on my computer, and killing pump.exe through task manager. With the same process I can get IE for a few seconds before something closes it. BTW the goal is to make sure I have any other required updates in place before I start to update to SP3. But now I'm think not such a great idea - if this virus is effecting system files, i have no idea what it will during an upgrade process downloading lots of them. What do you think?
  12. So more is now occurring I downloaded Rootrepeal from here http://ad13.geekstogo.com/RootRepeal.exe and when i go to load it I get a pop up with Exporting your private exchange key in the header asking for CryptoAPI Private Key and saying an application is requesting access to a protected item Same with Outlook Express and MS Word I kill pump.exe. in process explorer and the applications eventually load, but it also tells me that Norton was unable to scan incoming email for viruses. and rootrepeal will not load Doubt it has anything to do with Root Repeal download. Right?
  13. I have been progressively having problems with a XP Pro Laptop over the past few weeks, and i suspect that much of it is because I am still using SP1 Apparently ad-aware somehow broke the exe and lnk associations, and I fixed that and then . . . . . yesterday I get slammed with a couple of nasties and it's been one thing after another So I'm anticipating that I am going to get the sugestion from the forums to upgrade to sp2 before I go off and blindly update I thought I would inquire on what I should do to make sure I don't end up with a laptop that can only be used as an anchor. Links to guides or whatever suggestions you may have are greatly appreciated.
  14. Hi all - 12:30 am in chilly FL and I have Windows Police Pro, googled and found solution using MBAM However after it scans i receive the message "Run-time error "93" Invalid Pattern String It is worth noting that I also have a google redirect lurking as well. However my attempts earlier today to rid myself of this came to naught as spybot runs my CPU at 100% so long it overheats and shuts down. I also have Ad-Aware SE, downloaded latest definitions, and upon restart it takes way too long to load and sucks most of RAM. Upgrade to latest ad-aware and cannot get that to run either, stating that there is a missing dll - uninstalled and reinstalled, same thing. earlier today set computer to standby and on reboot got a blue screen flash and restart. which i am assuming is when police pro loaded the nasties. anyway here is HJT log int he hopes that we can start there - Obviously service svohost.exe and BHO ADC plugin "plugie.dll" sounds mighty suspicious. couple of others in red as well. may just leave the computer on until someone has chance to look at these. sure would like MBAM to run as well. thanks in advance for any help.
