  1. Problem started with XP AntiSPyware 2010. Initially MBAM wouldn't run. restarted in safe mode, ran MBAM, cleaned up 21 infections, didn't find the trojan, rebooted, now able to run MBAM, updated from web, ran MBAM again, now found spyware/virus infections including trojan.fakealert, cleaned it up, seemed all well and good but now no apps will startup unless you click on a data file like a Word Doc. When trying to open My Computer Properties, it displays a frame with Control Panel.. C:\Windows\System32\RunDLL32.exe Application not found. You guy were so helpful last year when I was helping a friend with a sever rootkit infection. Now let's see what it takes to finish up this clean-up. Thanks ERC
  2. I got a call from my brother who's having the PC problems. It certainly sounds like a serious spyware infection. just to give some background: I have worked on PCs for about 24 years. about 14 years of that as IT support, including 10 as an IT manager and Tech Support Manager. I've worked on all different Windows and many different Unix/Linux Distros, little bit of Mac; all kinds of hardware. Over the past three years I've had quite a few experiences with spyware and during this time found MBAM and have loved it. Sometimes it will clean a system in minutes and other times it takes quite a bit more work but in the end we win. I had one a couple months ago that turned out to be a nasty root-kit virus that was my worst one yet. It took a week to fully resolve and I even got help from you guys on the MBAM support forum which made the difference in the end. Anyway, here's where we stand. My brother (in Colorado) calls me (in California) with a suspected spyware infection. He's on a clone PC, and AMD processor w/ 2GB RAM, Windows XP Home w/ SP3. He was having web page redirection and a bunch of wacky problems, including components like the NIC not detected so he's also lost his web access on that PC. He has another PC there that he can get e-mail on and also pull stuff from the web. I figured we'd load MBAM and be done with it. I e-mailed him the link. He downloaded it and tried to install. he got the following error: Run-time error '372' vbalsgrid6.ocx, Which I have seen mentioned elsewhere on the support forum but I can't see any conclusive final recommendation for how to handle it. BTW we also tried installing from Safe mode but same result. I had him try to search for vbalsgrid6.ocx but search wouldn't come up in regular or safe mode. So I had him go to a command prompt window and run dir /s and it found only one copy under the MBAM prog folder. I started thinking that we'd just need to pull the HJT log and start this thread to request help but even that didn't work. We downloaded the HJT installer and it looked like it was installing but then it wouldn't run. I had him go back and download the executable and run it straight from the flash drive and it did look like it was starting up and we did scan and create the log file but Notepad never came up. I don't believe in giving up so I felt it was time to seek your help directly. I certainly don't want him to take it down to some PC shop where some knuckleheads can just wipe the drive and loose his data. Please recommend where we go from here. Is there a recent way to handle the VBALSGRID6.OCX problem and just get teh MBAM up and going? Thanks!! ERC
