A malware ransomware got through, complete with a loud beeping horn and an ominous message to "Comcast cable" user and an 888 number to call to have a technician fix the problem. Sorry I don't have more details because I immediately shut down the laptop, pulled the AC cord and removed the battery. Rebuilding and rebooting successful.
