  1. Hi Kevin, just a note to say I'm working on this! Thanks
  2. Hi Kevin, Yes, it's a big folder because it contains a lot of videos and images I use for my TV program. I'm reluctant to use the Unlocker program because it's ad-supported and some users have said it tries to install toolbars. What do you think? I tested a couple of the quarantined files in the Viewpoint folder by manually deleting the .vir extension. I got the Windows pop-up message "are you sure...changing an extension can make file unstable" but I did it anyway and was able to open the files. Problem is, with an 11Gb folder, that's a lot of files to change manually. Is there a way to do a batch change (similar to the Windows function "Find and Replace") that could just remove the .vir extension from the names of all the files in the folder? Thank you.
  3. Kevin, I compressed the 11 Gb folder with WinZip, but something seems to have gone wrong. The zipped folder is 10 Gb, so it didn't compress it very much. Since the max file size on this forum is 30Mb, I won't be able to attach it. What should I do?
  4. Folder copied to desktop and compression In progress. Folder size is 11 Gb (contains a lot of large images and mp4s). WIll post when finished. Thanks.
  5. Hi Kevin, Welcome back! I have a question. The last problem I had was that Adware had mistakenly quarantined my work folder (Viewpoint) because it thought it was malicious, and the program was not showing me the "restore" function in its interface. Since I've rebooted my PC several times since then, I tried again tonight to open Adware to see if the "restore" function was available. I got a message saying the program is out of date and requires updating, and the program would not open. In Windows Explorer, the Viewpoint folder is visible under C:\Adware (a screenshot is attached). When I right-click on the folder, Windows 7 gives me several options -- to "send to" another location, to cut (and paste somewhere else), etc. However, the files inside the Viewpoint folder have padlock icons on them, so I assume the locked feature would copy as well, and I would not be able to open them -- is that correct? The reason I'm asking is, I haven't noticed any other odd behaviors on my desktop PC, and if our only issue now is to restore the Viewpoint folder, is there a way I can do that via Explorer, or should I still run the other utilities you mentioned? Thank you!
  6. Hi Kevin, Yes, I still need your help -- I'm still working on the things you suggested I do. But if this thread can remain open until you return on 23 Sept, that will be fine. I have a laptop I can use in the interim. Please let me know! Thanks!
  7. I'm running out of time to catch my train, I'm afraid. If you think it will hold the files until I get back, with me turning off the power -- then I'd rather revisit this when I return. But since it's not behaving properly, i guess we can't know for sure what it will do....sigh
  8. I need to leave in an hour to go out of town for 2 weeks, and I wanted to turn off my computer. Will the quarantined files still be there if I turn off the machine and reboot when i get back, or will they be deleted? Do I need to re-install this utility, since it doesn't seem to be working? Is there something weird with the path? Thank you.
  9. I'm sorry to bother you again Kevin but the tool is not showing me the quarantined files. It's either blank lines, or the whole thing is grayed out like in the screenshot i'm attaching.
  10. I don't know what's happening with the tool. It doesn't seem to be working properly. Perhaps because the folder is so large and it needs a lot of time to populate? Because the Viewpoint files are still not showing up when I select Tools-Quarantine Manager- It is empty. I do see them from the directory, but not inside the tool. It has appended them with .vir, so I guess I can't copy and paste them to another location until Adw restores them, right?
  11. OMG - Kevin!!! i think i just found them!!! .i double-clicked on File Quarantine - then C-Users-Administrator-Documents-Viewpoint.... some of them have padlocks on them --- I did not see them in the quarantine log -- I saw only 4 registry entries -I have 2 questions: 1) How do you think this happened, when the Folder went missing BEFORE i ran Adw exe? Any idea? 2) How do I restore the files?
  12. Unfortunately, no.. I followed your directions exactly, but there are no files listed, and 4 registry keys, none of which refer to Viewpoint. See screenshot attached. Where are you seeing quarantined Viewpoint entries? I just now ran Adw exe for the first time, yet the Viewpoint folder disappeared before this, so wouldn't it've had to have been something else that caused it to disappear? I am concerned because that is probably the most important folder on my computer --
  13. Hope these are the logs you need. If not, let me know. Quarantine.log AdwCleaner[C0].txt AdwCleaner[S0].txt
  14. There seems to be a problem -- Adw exe just sits there, "Waiting for Action." No commands, but the "Clean" box is greyed out. I've launched it 3x and waited, but it doesn't do anything. Or does it just take a really long time?
  15. Hmm..."Viewpoint" is the name of the television program I produce. I created that folder quite a while ago and named it after the title of the program. It is my work folder. It is not shared -- it's only a local folder on my PC. Just fyi, I don't use AOL, don't have it on my machine and never have. Something strange caused that folder to disappear from my tree. I just hope it can be found and recovered. I will run AdwCleaner now and send you the log shortly. Thank you.
  16. When I right-click on "Viewpoint" and select "scan for deleted files", Recuva finds only a small number of files that were deleted in the past. Nothing recent. Yet that folder had hundreds of files of all sorts.
  17. This is the error message I get when I click on the shortcut. That folder was over a gig in size.
  18. Attached is the log file. In the Documents" screenshot I sent, you can see the shortcut to the "Viewpoint" folder under "Favorites." Fixlog.txt
  19. In my Windows 7 tree, "My Documents" is under "Documents". And under "Administrator" which I am logged in as), there is no "Documents" -- just "My Documents." Very confusing! More importantly, the right-click menu for "Documents" does not give me the options of "scan for deleted files" or "restore previous versions" as it does when I right-click on "My Documents." (I've attached screenshots of both.) The missing folder is titled "Viewpoint" and it was a sub-folder of "My Documents" (or "Documents"). I will run the fixlist now and send you the log.
  20. Unfortunately, no. The batch exe ran fine, but the folder is still missing. I am 100% sure I didn't delete it. I accessed the folder as recently as August 15, and maybe after that, too. It is a very large folder, containing different file types, so some of the files at least should be recoverable, although I know very little about how that works. I am hoping upon hope that it got moved somehow to another part of the drive, or that we can recover it somehow. Is there another suggestion I can try? I am not knowledgeable enough about Piriform Recuva to know how to use the advanced settings.
  21. Hi Kevin, I am in dire need of your help. I noticed an important folder is missing from my C drive. It was in My Documents." When I click on the folder link under My Favorites" it says "...refers to a location that is unavailable." I did a search of C: drive, but no results. I am positive I did not accidentally delete it. I checked the Recycle Bin anyway and it is not there, and my C Cleaner utility has the Recycle Bin unchecked. When I right-click on "My Documents" and select "Restore Previous Versions", it shows me restore points only since 8/19. There should be earlier restore points on my system. Is it possible that the fix scan I ran could have deleted it? It was a very large folder, filled with documents and images. How can I get it back? I have a utility called Recuva and I ran it, but it didn't find the folder, but I did not go into its advanced scan settings. I am leaving in 12 hours for a 2-week trip out of town, and won't be back at my PC until Sept 14th. Hoping you get this in the next 12 hours. Thank you.
  22. OK, thanks. Will do and will send you the logs as soon as possible. Thank you
  23. Hi Kevin, Just wanted to update you -- it's been 24 hours since I ran FRST with your fixlist, and I've seen no sign of the proxy hijacker! I haven't yet done the ADWcleaner or Sophos. Is it possible that your fixlist got rid of it once and for all? Should i still run the other two utilities?
