  1. Just thought I'd chime in here... If you have that file (instup.dll) multiple times in the quarantine list of Malwarebytes, then presumably Avast kept recreating or redeploying that file on your computer and Malwarebytes kept quarantining it, right? At least that appears to be what happened on my end. Are you sure that file isn't once again back in the appropriate location (in which case there is no need to remove an older copy of it from quarantine)? And if not, you could always just try uninstalling and reinstalling Avast - that would probably be the easier first step. Either way, if you get the instup.dll file back in place and Avast works again, you can probably just ignore whatever has been previously quarantined by Malwarebytes - although others can advise if this is completely correct or not, although I don't see any reason why it wouldn't be...
  2. Just tried updating and then doing a right-click context menu custom scan with Malwarebytes of the C:\Program Files\AVAST Software\Avast\setup directory (after removing the file exception from malwarebytes) and it came back clean - so looks like the update fixed it. Thanks!
  3. No idea if the instup.dll file contains any sensitive information. Is there a secure way to send to you?
  4. Can confirm this still seems to be an issue even with the following update: Date: 2021/04/20 10:02:25 -0400 Database Version: v2021.04.20.05 I've added the file to the "Ignore List" but would prefer it just get fixed on Malwarebytes' end.
  5. bru - thanks for the confirmation. noknojon - you are still not understanding my concern here. It has nothing to do with Chameleon - I was simply listing the items that the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware software installation placed in my start menu folders for full disclosure. The concern I have is why the software installation is creating a shortcut for "Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Notifications" that seems to do nothing special, be no different than the other shortcut created ("Malwarebytes Anti-Malware"), and in fact by having both shortcuts it causes confusion since only one displays in the start menu and when searching the start menu.
  6. Again - I'm not sure if you are understanding my question/concern here. I installed the free version of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, and for some reason, it puts two shortcuts (one called "Malwarebytes Anti-Malware" and another called "Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Notifications") in the start menu program group (located here: C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware) (along with the uninstall shortcut and the "tools" sub-folder). Apparently though, because those two shortcuts are pretty much exactly the same (i.e. same target path, same start-in path, same shortcut icon, etc.), Microsoft is only displaying one of them when browsing to the start menu in Windows 8 (or even when searching for program shortcuts - such as when you click the windows logo key and then just type what you are looking for). And the one that is coming up is the "Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Notifications" and not the "Malwarebytes Anti-Malware". Not that it makes much of a difference since they both do the exact same thing it seems (which is start Malwarebytes Anti-Malware software), but I still don't get why the installation routine is automatically creating that second "Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Notifications" shortcut when it seems to serve no purpose whatsoever...???
  7. I'm still not quite clear on why the installation of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware creates two start menu shortcuts (one called "Malwarebytes Anti-Malware" and one called "Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Notifications") that appear to do the exact same thing...? Thanks.
  8. I just installed Malwarebytes Anti-Malware on my Win8.1 (Lenovo X220) machine, and didn't check the box during installation for it not to create start menu icons (so it did create them). Weirdly enough though, it created the following shortcuts: C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware - Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Notifications - Malwarebytes Anti-Malware - Uninstall Malwarebytes Anti-Malware C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\Tools - Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Chameleon For whatever reason (probably something to do with how Win8.1 shows start menu shortcuts in it's "Metro" start menu listing (and search results), I don't ever see the "Malwarebytes Anti-Malware" shortcut, but instead see the "Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Notifications" shortcut. However, in looking at the shortcut properties for these two, they appear to be identical (both launching mbam.exe). And if I remove the "Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Notifications" shortcut, then the "Malwarebytes Anti-Malware" shortcut shows up correctly. So, what is the purpose of the software creating that extra "Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Notifications" shortcut?? Thanks
