  1. Hi ingber:

Further to Porthos' question <above>, if your Malwarebytes Browser Guard was unexpectedly turned off in a Chromium-based browser like Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge then the same thing happened to me a few days ago.  I discovered that my Malwarebytes Browser Guard for Chrome extension had been automatically upgraded from v2.6.27 (the "old" Manifest v2 version) to v3.0.7 (the "new" Manifest v3 version with a smaller number of blocking rules - see the 12-Aug-2024 announcement Manifest v3 is Live on Chrome in in the Malwarebytes Browser Guard for Chrome board of this forum) and needed to be turned on again.

See my 16-Aug-2024 post # 2697037 in Susan Bradley's topic Use Chrome and Ublock Origin? in the AskWoody.com forum for further details about this unexpected upgrade.  My post # 2693359 in that AskWoody.com describes similar changes that are coming to uBlock Origin for Chrome.

Those with old versions...Please note/record your License ID and Key and uninstall your present unsupported version.  You can download and install Version 4 and activate it with your License ID and Key.

Just to clarify, the system requirements <here> state that Malwarebytes for Windows 4.x requires Win 7 SP1 or higher.  If you have a Win XP or Vista OS and are currently using the legacy Malwaerbytes v3.5.1 then David H. Lipman's suggestion to upgrade to v4.x is not a viable solution.

  3. Just an FYI that Malwarebytes announced today that Malwarebytes v3.5.1 (the legacy edition for Win XP and Vista) has reached end-of-life.  This EOL is effective immediately and there will be no further malware definition updates released for this legacy product.  See employee jtodd234’s 08-Aug-2024 post in anon74’s Malwarebytes 3.5.1 not updating definitions… again for further details.

I'm not sure why, but as of today there is still no official announcement about the v3.x EOL posted in the Malwarebytes News board at https://forums.malwarebytes.com/forum/11-malwarebytes-news/.  I still have Malwarebytes v3.5.1 installed on my (now rarely used) Vista SP2 machine and often recommend this legacy software to Win XP and Vista users looking for a reliable on-demand second opinion scanner, so a few months warning would have been appreciated.

  4. Kudos to Malwarebytes for not placing the new Identity Protection panel in Malwarebytes v5.1.7.121-1.0.1293 (rel. 29-Jul-2024) on an already crowded main dashboard.

However, I noticed the small print below the Digital Footprint Scanner states that you are automatically enrolled to receive marketing emails when you submit your email address for analysis to see if it has been exposed in a hack. I can perform the same email scan on the Have I Been Pwned (HIBP) site at https://haveibeenpwned.com/ without subscribing to marketing emails, and I'm guessing that Malwarebytes' Digital Footprint Scanner uses the HIBP API and database like many other free email scanners (e.g., like the Mozilla Monitor at https://monitor.mozilla.org/).

I could understand if the Marketing Department used ads in Malwarebytes Free to push extra features like Malwarebytes VPN and Identity Protection, but I don't want a paid security program like Malwarebytes Premium to be used as a marketing tool.  I already posted about the unnecessary clutter on the v5.x.x dashboard in my 20-Apr-2024 topic Unexpected Upgrade to Malwarebytes v5.1.3 - Initial Impressions, and the new Identity Protection panel just looks like more of the same. The fact that I can unsubscribe from these marketing emails is irrelevant - when I am performing a security scan of my email address from a paid security program I don't want it to be saved on a remote server and/or added to a group mailing list.

  5. Hi Doc898913:

The "official" release notes are posted at  https://support.malwarebytes.com/hc/en-us/sections/23038336826899-Version-History   but it often takes several days for that version history to be updated after a new version of Malwarebytes is released.  Employee H4V0C has pinned a topic called Malwarebytes 5 at the top of this forum board that is updated shortly after a new product (scan engine) or component package is released, and many users subscribe to that topic so they are notified by email as soon as an update is released.  Note: H4V0C will likely start a new topic when Malwarebytes v5.2.x is eventually released and you will have to subscribe to that new topic to continue receiving mail notifications.

Unfortunately, for the past two years the product version number has not matched the version number of the Malwarebytes installer, which makes it very difficult, if not impossible, for Galactic Scan or any software updater app to correctly detect when an update is released for Malwarebytes.  See P1W's 23-Jun-2023 What's the conventional version number of the mb4_offline installer?  for more information.  My 25-Mar-2024 post <here> in P1W's topic describes the difficulties I now have using winget commands or software updater apps like QuickInstaller and UCheck to correctly detect the latest available version of Malwarebytes.

Please see the following information about the KB5034441 Windows Update installation failure ...

The KB5034441 WinRE update successfully installed on my Win 10 Pro v22H2 laptop with my other Jan 2024 Patch Tuesday updates even though my WinRE partition did not have the 250 MB of free disk space recommended by Microsoft (see my 16-Jan-2024 post # 2628138 in the AskWoody forum). However, I was still using Malwarebytes Premium v4.6.8.311-1.0.2242 (rel. 11-Jan-2024) at the time.

My problems with Windows Update did not begin until after my Malwarebytes Premium v4.6.12 automatically upgraded to v5.1.3 on 19-Apr-2024.  As OP of this topic that is why I asked if anyone had started having new problems with Windows Update AFTER they upgraded to Malwarebytes Premium v5.x.

I don't want this thread to go too far off topic, but if the KB5034441 WinRE update has failed on your system in the past you should read the 10-Jul-2024 ghacks.net article Microsoft says KB5034440 and KB5034441 updates won't be offered to PCs that meet these conditionsMicrosoft modified the release notes <here> for KB5034441 on 09-Jul-2024 (expand the section titled "Change Log") and they now claim that Windows Update should no longer offer KB5034441 to Win 10 v21H2 and v22H2 users if their WinRE recovery partition does not have sufficient free space.

  7. Has anyone with a Win 10 OS had problems installing their Patch Tuesday updates (released on the 2nd Tuesday of each month) since upgrading to Malwarebytes Premium v5.x?

My Malwarebytes Premium v4.1.6 automatically upgraded to v5.1.3 on 19-Apr-2024.  Since then, during my:

    • May 2024 Patch Tuesday updates on 19-May-2024 Windows Update threw 0x800706be errors during the download of my KB5037768 monthly CU (OS Build 19045.4412) and KB2267602 Microsoft Defender virus definition set v1.411.217. See details in my post # 2673128 in the AskWoody forum.
    • June 2024 Patch Tuesday updates on 14-Jun-2024 Windows Update got stuck while downloading my KB5039211 monthly CU (OS Build 19045.4529) and Malicious Software Removal Tool (MSRT).  I re-configured Malwarebytes Premium so it would not load at Windows startup (General | Windows Startup | Launch Malwarebytes in the Background When Windows Starts | OFF) and re-booted my computer, and Windows Update ran to completion without any further problems.  See details in my post # 2680565 in the AskWoody forum.
    • July 2024 Patch Tuesday updates on 12-Jul-2024 I prevented Malwarebytes Premium from starting with Windows and re-booted BEFORE my Windows Update session started and all updates [including my KB5040427 monthly CU (OS Build 19045.4651)] installed without throwing errors or getting stuck.  See details in my post # 2687199 in the AskWoody forum.

These preliminary tests suggest that Malwarebytes Premium v5.1.x might be interfering with Windows Update on my Win 10 v22H2 machine.  I know it might be a coincidence that my Patch Tuesday problems started immediately after my Malwarebytes Premium upgraded to v5.x so I'm just curious to know if any other Win 10 users have noticed a similar problem.

Note that my Malwarebytes setting at General | Windows Security | Always Register Malwarebytes in the Windows Security Center is OFF and I always create mutual scan exclusions in my MS Defender and Malwarebytes settings to minimize possible conflicts.

Malwaerbytes is blocking a connection to the Canadian Foodgrains Bank site (https://foodgrainsbank.ca/) because of a possible Trojan.  I was able to browse to this site this afternoon but got a "Temporary problem - Please try again later" message when I tried to make an online donation, and this evening I can't connect at all because of the Malwaerbytes website block shown below.

  12. I know nothing about the Rust programming language, but could this error be related to Rust ending support for Win 7 and Win 8.x with the release of Rust v1.76 in Feb 2024?  See the announcement in the Rust Windows Support Schedule 2024.

According to a 24-Mar-2024 post by Nadahar in How to make RustDesk builds work on Windows 7 (and probably Windows 8) any executable compiled with Rust v1.76 or higher will now throw the error "The procedure entry point ProcessPrng could not be located in the dynamic link library bcryptprimitives.dll" when it runs on machines with these older OSs.

Perhaps it is related to a Day Light Savings issue?

    Hi AdvancedSetup:

As expected, deleting my "old" scheduled scan and creating a new one solved the problem, and my latest weekly scan ran on schedule at 6:00 PM this past Friday.

    MBv5_1_4NewWeeklyThreatScanScheduledFor6PMRunsOnTime24May2024.png.404d7d4be1590359f5fcdc8d041b8590.png

Daylight Savings Time (DST) started in Canada on 10-Mar-2024 and my Malwarebytes Premium didn't auto-update from v4.x to v5.x until 19-Apr-2024.  I suppose it's possible that I didn't notice that my scheduled scans were running an hour late as far back as 10-Mar-2024 (this glitch has happened to me before during a DST switch) but I don't know for certain if that was the case this time since my scan reports don't go back that far.

Whatever the cause, Malwarebytes is the only software I've used that will occasionally lose track of the one hour DST offset for my time zone, even though my system clock shows the correct time of day. I understand this isn't a critical bug but I wish the software developers would fix this annoying glitch once and for all.

    Hi Porthos:

Are you referring to QuiGonJohn's 16-Mar-2024 Have you all stopped making updates? That topic was discussing Malwarebytes v1.75, which reached EOL on 08-Jan-2017.

If you read the footnote in the image AdvancedSetup posted <here> on 25-Mar-2024 in that topic (excerpt re-posted below) it only states that Malwarebytes will make a declaration about v3.5.1 End of Maintenance "at a later date" and that Win XP and Vista users "... will continue to receive any available protection updates that are supported in v3.5.1 until its respective End of Maintenance date".

I can't find any official announcement about the End of Maintenance and / or End of Life dates for Malwarebytes v3.5.1.

  15. Has Malwarebytes made a decision about the date when the legacy Malwarebytes v.3.5.1 for Win XP and Vista will stop receiving malware definition updates (EOL + 1 year according to the policy <here>)?

The legacy installer is still available for download at https://downloads.malwarebytes.com/file/mb3_legacy but the support article Malwarebytes for Windows v3 Product Lifecycle as been removed from the Malwarebytes Support site, and there is no announcement in the Malwarebytes News board that states when Malwarebytes v3.5.1 will (or already did) officially reach EOL.

The most recent post I could find in this forum confirming that Malwarebytes v.3.5.1 was still receiving regular malware definition updates was Dave-H's 09-Oct-2023 post in anon743's Malwarebytes 3.5.1 not updating definitions... again.

My version of MWB Premium has just been updated to version 5 this morning. I don't use the VPN service ...However, what is more disconcerting is that MWB is attempting to communicate with a server in Sweden (IP address 45.83.223.233) host ipv4.am.i.mullvad.net every 1/2 second...

    Hi MJL:

I can't give you a definitive answer but the Mullvad VPN web page at https://mullvad.net/en/help/partnerships-and-resellers notes that "Malwarebytes has partnered with Mullvad in order to utilize our global network of VPN servers for its own VPN application, Malwarebytes Privacy, since October 2019". Mullvad is based in Sweden.

Someone from Malwarbytes will have to explain why the new Malwarebytes v5.x still attempts to connect to the Mullvad servers if the user dos not have Malwarebytes Privacy VPN installed on their system.  That's something that could be checked on the local computer before the connection is even attempted.

That explains how you were upgraded with the slow rollout. I have not seen personally, any of the systems with the old style keys upgraded with the check for updates button.

That doesn't excuse the fact that I was forced to upgrade to v5.x when v4.x is still fully supported. As long as v4.x is still supported I should be able to postpone the upgrade to v5.x until I decide that problems identified by early adopters have been dealt with.

If Malwarebytes is preventing users who still have perpetual / lifetime licenses with an "old-style" (KEY + ID) product key then that might be  because they're still trying to root out the last of these users still using single-device product keys to active Premium features on up to three devices (a practice Malwarebytes turned a blind eye to for years) and want to finally force those users to either switch to a "new-style" (KEY only) single-device product key or start paying for a multi-device product key.

+1 Please remove the "Other devices" section as it's an absolute disaster for peoples privacy...

I also don't understand the reason for having the "Other Devices" panel on the main dashboard on a home consumer product.  Before I purchased my Win 10 machine I used Norton Security as my antivirus and always purchased a multi-device subscription.  I was the individual who paid for the license so I was the registered owner and could log in to my online Norton Account and manage devices there (e.g., add / remove different devices), but it would be unnecessary (and quite frankly, concerning) if every person using one of the available Norton installation seats on their personal device was able to monitor the status of every other device sharing that product key.  That would be fine in a business environment if you were the system administrator responsible managing multiple devices, but this is completely unnecessary in a home consumer environment when the family "manager" has their own online Norton Account.  The same logic applies for a multi-device Malwarbytes license.

I don't know if Malwarebytes is using telemetry data they collect to populate the "Other Devices" panel to help them detect illegal product keys, but at the very least I'd like to see that "Other Devices" panel moved off the main dashboard and accessed from a separate menu item on the far-left of the GUI as suggested in my 20-Apr-2024 post in Unexpected Upgrade to Malwarebytes v5.1.3 - Initial Impressions.

Is your license an old lifetime one with a separate ID and KEY?

    Hi Porthos:

No, it's a "new-style" single product key (xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx with no ID).  My "old-style" perpetual / lifetime product key (xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx with ID = xxxxx ) had to be replaced with a modern key by Customer Support back in June 2019 (after I provided my original Cleverbridge proof of purchase) so that I could create an online Malwarebytes Account.

I don't know why it was unexpected. The warning is in the release notes since Feb 23.

    Hi Porthos:

At the very least, I was expecting that when I ran a manual check for updates that the installer would display a pop-up informing me that an upgrade to v5.x was available and give me the choice of answering "Yes" (to upgrade to v5.1.3.110-1.0.1219, rel. 19-Apr-2024) or "No" (to update to v4.6.13.324-1.0.2319, rel. 19-Apr-2024).

I purchased my Win 10 machine in Aug 2019 and according to my notes I initially installed Malwarebytes v3.8.3.2965-1.0.613. By Feb 2020 the component package had updated to 3.8.3.2965-1.0.629, but I was able to stay on that version for several months and just keep my malware definitions up-to-date.  By July 2020 most of the initial bugs in 4.x had been fixed and I decided it was safe to to upgrade, but I was able to do so by wiping v3.8.3 off my system with the Malwarebytes Support Tool and performing a clean installing of v4.1.2.73-1.0.972 with the v4.x  full offline installer.

I don't think I understand why you don't just right-click the icon in your notifications tray and choose Check for Updates.

    Hi Wisewiz:

Would checking for updates from the system tray icon have produced a different result than checking at Settings | General | Application Updates | Check for Updates? For example, if I had checked for updates from the system tray icon would I have received the update to v4.6.13.324-1.0.2319 (rel. 19-Apr-2024, release notes <here>) instead of the upgrade to v5.1.3.110-1.0.1219 (also rel. 19-Apr-2024, release notes <here>)?

  24. I've been following this thread for a few months and appreciate all the feedback early adopters have posted here about their experiences with Malwarebytes v5.x.

I was unexpectedly upgraded from Malwarebytes v4.6.12.323-1.0.2309 to v5.1.3.110-1.0.1219 yesterday when I ran a manual check for updates (Settings | General | Application Updates | Check for Updates), and I agree with the majority of users posting in this topic who dislike the unnecessary clutter on the new dashboard. See my 20-Apr-2024 topic Unexpected Upgrade to Malwarebytes v5.1.3 - Initial Impressions for further details.

  25. I updated to Malwarebytes Premium v4.6.12.323-1.0.2309 on 04-Apr-2024 and ran a manual check for updates yesterday (Settings | General | Application Updates | Check for Updates) expecting that I would be updated to v4.6.13.324-1.0.2319 (rel. 19-Apr-2024, release notes <here>).  The installation appeared to get stuck for several minutes but I was eventually warned that Malwarebytes would be restarted to apply the update, and I was dismayed to discover that I had actually been upgraded to v5.1.3.110-1.0.1219.  Given the number of bugs that early adopters are still reporting I'm not sure why Malwarebytes is silently pushing this upgrade out (i.e., without giving v4.x users the opportunity to decline the upgrade for now) via the built-in updater.

I have to agree with the majority of users posting in Edzila's 21-Feb-2024 topic Malwarebytes 5 who dislike the new dashboard.  Like many home consumers, I have not purchased Malwarebytes' Privacy VPN (and have no intention of doing so) and my Premium license is for a single device, so the entire bottom half of my v5.x dashboard is wasted space and nothing more than an annoying advertisement for up-selling unwanted services.  I'd like to see Malwarebytes move those VPN and Other Devices panels off the main dashboard and display them as separate menu buttons on the left of the dashboard (i.e., below the Dashboard and Settings buttons) to reduce some of the clutter.

I also must have spent 15 minutes tabbing through all the settings before I finally found the "About Malwarebytes" link to see my version information.  I don't understand the logic of removing the version number of the main product (e.g., 5.1.3) from the title bar of the main dashboard where it was clearly displayed in Malwarbytes v4.x.

Online support for Malwarebytes v5.x at https://support.malwarebytes.com/hc/en-us still appears to be a work in progress (assuming that the section titled "Desktop Security" is where I should be looking for Malwarebytes 5.x support articles), and if I try to link to a user guide or support articles from within the Malwarebytes v5.1.3 Help menu I'm directed to outdated Malwarebytes v4.x documentation.

I was pleased that my weekly scheduled scan for 6 PM on Fridays ran on time yesterday and I continue have confidence in Malwarebytes' real-time protection, but I have to say that I'm deeply disappointed with what I've seen so far in the re-designed v5.x interface.
