  1. I think a pc shop, particularly as it won't boot any more Thanks for all your help (and patience) anyway
  2. Ok. i've had a look at the link and to be honest it's kinda going above my head a bit. All of this is really and i'm concerned about doing something and buggering up my other laptop, which seems to be working now. I'm wondering whether I ought to get the buggered laptop taken in somewhere and sorted as i'm concerned it's all a bit beyond me as i'm quite basic when it comes to computers and have struggled a lot (as you've probably guessed!).
  3. Oh, and my other laptop seems buggered too, folders are empty or won't open, says there isn't enough systems resources. Is this a memory problem? Ubuntu was 883MB??
  4. Aargh can anything else go wrong??? Downloaded Ubuntu, found it through img and did as you said and put the disc in to burn it too. Once img found it the burn icon became apparent but then my computer automatically closed down. I re-started it and as it started up the same thing happened?? I've removed the disc and have managed to start computer up again.
  5. Ok. Ubuntu still didn't download last night so doing it again now. I'm downloading Ubuntu from the link in howtogeek, so assume it's the right one. It's called Ubuntu-13.10-desktop-amd65.iso?
  6. It's ok, downloading ubunto again as hadn't downloaded properly, although it's got over an hour left so will pick up tomorrow and carry on
  7. Got that and downloaded ok. The next instruction....Then click on the icon next to “Source”, pick the downloaded ISO file, stick a recordable CD into the drive, and click burn. Is the downloaded ISO file the Ubuntu link I downloaded? If so, I can click on the icon next to Source, as above, but can't obviously see how to burn?
  8. Can you take a look at the howtogeek link you gave me above as I clicked on the the ImgBurn. link which took me to this page... http://www.imgburn.com/ where I clicked on Start Dowbload?
  9. Downloaded the imgburn but when I go to open it, it opens up a speed up my computer programme that looks nothing like the programme in the link?
  10. Ok, trying to do this now. Do I click on the Ubunto Live CD link or the ImgBurn link or both? Only the Ubunto link has it's only set of installtion instructions and IMG has another?
  11. This all looks ok and straight forward, thank god! When it says it will erase all current files, does this mean all music, pictures and whatever else is on the laptop? or will I be able to save this through backing up and how would I do this?
  12. PC is Samsung notebook, there is a model number I think? It came with windows installed from PC shop and the disc came with it.
  13. press any key to boot from cd or dvd then... start in safe mode start safe mode with networking start safe mode with command prompt, or start windows normally
  14. The F4 was recover. If I press F2 however it just goes to the options below. start in safe mode start safe mode with networking start safe mode with command prompt, or start windows normally
  15. i get the samsung screen and F2 for for set up F4 for reboot (i think, although it went quite quick). It then gave me the option to start in safe mode, with command prompts etc. When left without clicking on anything it goes back to a black screen, as it did before.
