  1. The malware is an add-on called "default". I dis-abled it and the problem is gone. When I get up the courage I will enable it and see what happens. I'm 99% certain that the problem will recur. Thanks
  2. I found the problem, an add-on extension called "default" I disables it and the problem disapperaed. MSSE failed to detect it and let it disable my computer.
  3. I have a "search" button in my tab bar. I am told this is a malware add-on. Microsoft Security Essentials (MSSE) cannot remove it. The MSSE malware monitoring process (msmpeng.exe) runs all the time and hogs the CPU so that the computer is essentially disabled. The only way I can use my computer is to disable real time monitoring and delete the process, msmpeng.exe. So, I downloaded Malwarebytes. As soon as the original launch, the same thing happened, the Malwarebytes process ran at or near 99% all the time. I then attempted to download the latest definitions. This froze my computer solid requiring hard boot. I then uninstalled Malwarebytes which took a VERY long time. Any suggestions?
  4. I am not running malwarebytes at all, only MSSE. I disabled real time monitoring in MSSE. The problem has not recurred since. Can you still help me?
  5. This process starts running and uses 95%+ of the cpu, crippling the computer. The only way I have found to stop it is to terminate the process. However msmpeng.exe re-appears very shortly. The prevent this problem I have disabled real time protection. I would like to have real tiem protection without crippling my compouter. Any suggestions? PS. the date on msmpeng.exe is 6/13/2013.
