Are you also running Norton by any chance ? My problem seems to be linked to Norton as it only occurs when this 'Early Launch Anti-Malware scan' runs. I am not experiencing the 'red check mark' or error messages you describe though so our problems, although similar seem to differ slightly. Firefox - thank you for your swift reply. I will follow your instructions but I probably won't have time to post back the results until tomorrow.

Okay - here is a strange one for you... I upgraded to MBAM 2.0 (premium) last week and it has been working perfectly and I am very pleased with it apart from one very strange occurence: occasionally when I turn the computer on two Malwarebytes icons will appear in the taskbar on the desktop. At first I thought it was just some weird graphical error / bug making the icon appear twice but I when I checked in task manager there were indeed two instances of mbam.exe running. This doesn't happen every time I turn the computer on and when it does simply rebooting the computer corrects the error. I thought it might just be a small bug and that updating to 2.0.1.1004 would correct the issue but it is still happening. I have been able to work out that it is linked to the 'Early Lanch Anti-Malware scan' in Norton 360 which runs every so often when the computer boots up. I don't know why but this feature in Norton 360 doesn't run every time the computer is turned on. It seems to be totally random as to when it runs. So I've been able to establish that when Norton's Early Launch scan runs it creates the error resulting in two Malwarebytes running and when it does not run Malwarebytes starts as normal. I'm running Windows 8.1 64 bit. Any ideas on how to resolve this bug ?

Replacing memory on old laptop - advice wanted
Andrew6974 replied to Andrew6974's topic in General Windows PC Help
All fixed now. It only took about a minute to swap out the memory modules and it seems to have resolved all the problems with this laptop. The OS is recognising the full 4GB which is nice and diagnostics are no longer detecting any hardware or memory problems. So I guess all I needed was some new RAM after all - wish I had known that months ago and that it was so simple to resolve ! System is fast and stable again - none of the freeze ups and crashes I was having before. I'll be able to keep this laptop going as a spare / backup now. Thank you again for the advice. -
Replacing memory on old laptop - advice wanted
Andrew6974 replied to Andrew6974's topic in General Windows PC Help
Thank you. As per your advice I have ordered two 2GB PC-6400s. I should get them tomorrow. Is it advisable to use use an anti-static wrist strap when opening up computers ? I have read on other sites that static electricity discharges can damage internal circuitry. And is it safe to use a can of compressed air to clean out any dust that may be inside ? -
Hi. I've decided to try and replace the faulty memory on an old laptop as the start of a project to restore it to working condition. The laptop currently has a total of 3GB of RAM installed in two slots - a 1GB and 2GB card... 1GB 2rx16 / PC2-6400S-666-12-A0 2GB 2rx8 / PC2-6400S-666-12-FO ... they are 200pin slot cards. The 1GB card has two black memory blocks on it and the 2GB card has four blocks on it. I was thinking of buying two of these... http://www.amazon.co.uk/200-pin-SODIMM-PC2-6400-Memory-Module/dp/B001342KM8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1391015732&sr=8-1&keywords=pc2-6400 The one above that Amazon is selling looks identical to the ones I already have - 200pin / PC2-6400 I'm also unsure as to how much RAM a Vista 32-bit computer can use. There are a lot of different opinions around - some say it's 3GB, some say it's 4 or more GB.

www.ezydvd.com being blocked as malicious
Andrew6974 replied to Andrew6974's topic in Website Blocking
Thank you for the prompt reply. Although I am pleased that the block is scheduled for removal shortly can you tell me what prompted the block in the first place ? Everything was fine with this site yesterday and it has never happened before. Do you have reason to believe they were compromised in any way by malicious activity ? -
Hi. For some reason starting today when I try to connect to www.ezydvd.com which is a reputable australian DVD retailer which I have been using for years Malwarebytes is now blocking it as a potentially malicious website. Multiple blocks come up at the same time. Also - what is odd is when I go direct to their australian homepage which is www.ezydvd.com.au (note the .au at the end) I can still connect to the site normally without any IP blocks. So how can www.ezydvd.com be bad whilst www.ezydvd.com.au be good when they are both one and the same ? I have attached todays protection log for you to look at. Please can you look into the matter for me - as I say this is one of Australia's largest and most reputable online entertainment retailers which I have have been shopping with for years. I have never had any problems with this site before.

Norton detecting MBAM files as Trojan Horses
Andrew6974 replied to Andrew6974's topic in Resolved Malware Removal Logs
Update - I have taken the laptop into my local computer repair shop and they have said the RAM needs replacing and the harddrive is pretty much done. They also offered a malware removal service as well. So with the costs of replacement parts, upgrades, malware removal plus labour I've just decided just to "retire" this old laptop. It's more economical at this point to put the money towards a new laptop instead. Thanks again for the advice (and sorry to have bothered you). You can close this thread up now. -
Norton detecting MBAM files as Trojan Horses
Andrew6974 replied to Andrew6974's topic in Resolved Malware Removal Logs
I had some trouble with Memtest and the others - Blue Screen crashes. I did manage to run windows memory test. A message during the scan came up saying 'detected uncorrectable hardware error' and the results which appeared after reboot list 95 failed tests if that makes any sense ? Also - Windows logs are filled with thousands of errors and warnings. Can memeory failure leave the computer more susceptible to infection when online ? I'm still concerned at the ease at which Malwarebytes was apparently infiltrated with a trojan. Does the program not have strong defences ? -

Ok. Thanks. I'll try and run the memory tests later today and post back with the results. -
Norton detecting MBAM files as Trojan Horses
Andrew6974 replied to Andrew6974's topic in Resolved Malware Removal Logs
Thanks for the advice. I'm not on the affected computer right now and I won't have time to run the memory tests until later. Regarding the files Norton detected as trojans - if they are not your files then why are they located in the Malwarebytes program folder ? Three unknown .tmp files that should not be in c:\program files\malwarebytes' anti-malware is that not cause for concern ? Perhaps Norton correctly detected that Malwarebytes had been infiltrated by a trojan. -
Some strange goings on today... I was on wikipedia when Norton 360 just stopped working. Managed to get it started again straight away but then a few minutes later a message came up saying that Malwarebytes had stopped working as well. I started the program again, went offline and ran a full scan with Malwarebytes. In the midst of this scan a message came up from Norton auto-protect saying "proccessing threats..." To my surprise the threats were all listed as trojan horses and were all malwarebytes temp files... c:\program files\malwarebytes' anti-malware\00003663.tmp contained trojan horse - removed c:\program files\malwarebytes' anti-malware\00023263.tmp contained trojan horse - removed c:\program files\malwarebytes' anti-malware\00031317.tmp contained trojan horse - removed ... Norton seems to have detected and removed malwarebytes files as trojans ?! Have since run full scans with Norton AV (+NPE) and Malwarebytes (+MBAR). Nothing detected and the programs at least appear to be functioning normally for now. I should note that I have been having problems with Firefox freezing / crashing the past couple of months ever since updating to 25.0.1 and continuing with 26. I didn't read anything sinister into this though. My thoughts were that it was perhaps Firefox, Sandboxie, NoScript and AdBlock not getting along so well together on this old Vista machine. I have also had a couple of BSODs and explorer has crashed a couple of times in recent weeks. Prefetch has been failing a lot as well so I have disabled it. Windows Memory Diagnostics indicates some sort of memory failure as well. I'm really sorry to have to ask for help again but I am quite worried about this and cannot understand how this could have happened as I am very careful online. Both main security products failing (whilst online) within a couple of minutes of each other cannot just be explained away. Here are DDS logs...

IP protection failure
Andrew6974 replied to Andrew6974's topic in Malwarebytes for Windows Support Forum
It seems to have been a one off. I was able to turn the protection back on straight away so that's why I didn't post the DDS logs and I don't have any reason to suspect anything malicious at the moment. Really I was just hoping someone would be able to tell me what the error code meant. Thanks again anyway. -
IP protection failure
Andrew6974 replied to Andrew6974's topic in Malwarebytes for Windows Support Forum
Hi Firefox, Sorry - I forgot to mention that I was able to restart the malicious website blocking right away. It's just that for some reason it had turned itself off and the logs showed that odd error message. It seems to be working fine again though. I have attached the mbam-check plus todays protection log... -
Does anyone know what this means ? ERROR IP protection failed: FwpmTransactionCommit0 failed with error code -2144206819 Just after a scheduled update occured I noticed that the malwarebytes icon was greyed out. IP protection had been turned off and the above error was noted in the logs.

A short while ago I was going to visit the Malwarebytes forums but I made a typo and accidentally typed forums.nalwarebytes.org - that's with an N instead of an M. Immediately Malwarebytes informed me of a blocked outgoing connection to a malicious IP address... IP-BLOCK 208.87.149.250 (Type: outgoing, Port: 49268, Process: firefox.exe) My browser was sandboxed with Sandboxie at the time, so I disconnected from the internet and cleared out the sandbox. Should I be okay or is this a cause for concern ?

[SOLVED] Shielded applications now listed in negative values
Andrew6974 replied to Andrew6974's topic in Anti-Exploit Beta
That's re-assuring because right now according to MBAE minus 8 applications are currently being shielded ! I still think having the shielded apps counter on the general tab is a useful (and reassuring) feature so I think you should keep it in future versions if you can. Provided of course you can work out the bug and ensure that it provides an accurate real-time count. -
Sorry I couldn't be more helpful hoople. I'm not one of experts, just a regular member, and as such not qualified to help troubleshoot / solve technical problems. The best suggestion I can give if you have not already done so is head over to the Windows 8 forums and start a thread there. There will be plenty of people who are experts in Windows 8 / 8.1 matters. And as you can expect 8.1 is the hottest topic over there right now http://eightforums.com In more general terms though a lot of people are complaining that certain aspects of Windows 8.1, such as the search function, are not working as efficiently as before. Even though my shutdown problem was resolved by some driver updates from Sony I have noticed there is still a bit of a lag when booting straight to desktop. It takes about a minute longer now, but like you said with your problem it's a minor thing and I'm not too concerned about it just now. Just annoying.

[SOLVED] Shielded applications now listed in negative values
Andrew6974 replied to Andrew6974's topic in Anti-Exploit Beta
Thank you for letting me know. For some reason the application counter is all over the place again with this latest build. Sometimes it lists 0 applications, other times it does accurately list the number of shielded apps, but the minus values is new to me. I just wanted to double check that it is just a superficial bug (on the surface so to speak) and that the program itself is still functioning and offering protection. I hope you get it all worked out soon. Looking forward to the finished product -
Hi hoople, Sorry to hear about your own problems with 8.1. I haven't experienced any problems with search functions myself but I have heard that others are experiencing problems similar to yours. This is almost identical to the problem you describe... http://superuser.com/questions/666787/windows-8-1-search-charm-slow-with-explorer-exe-cpu-usage-at-100 There is also a good tutorial here about optimising search functions, updated for Windows 8.1... http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/4595-search-windows-8-a.html It might be worth registering and starting a new thread about your problem over at eightforums. They might be able to offer more assistance. You could also try the help forums here... http://answers.microsoft.com http://bleepingcomputer.com http://tomshardware.com Hopefully there is a solution to your problem out there somewhere !

I have just updated to 0.09.4.2000 and under the 'general' tab the shielded applications are now listed in negative values, meaning that right now it says that -3 applications are being shielded and the log only lists one application. I have tried clearing the logs, stopping / restarting the program, rebooting the computer but the problem still persists. This is a new problem for me and has only appeared with the latest build and I haven't seen anyone else report this issue. Is there any explanation for this ?

Hi Ron, thanks for all the links. Unless I missed something the Microsoft account is forced upon you during the setup process for 8.1 (unless there was an opt-out that I missed ?), but the first things I did after setup was to log out of the Microsoft account, revert back to my local user account, setup 'boot to desktop' mode and install classic shell. I then went to Microsoft and closed down the account they forced me to set up just 30 minutes earlier Uploading files to Skydrive is turned off by default I believe. At least it was on my computer when I checked. Annoyingly I had previously uninstalled the Skydrive app when I first got the computer. But 8.1 puts it right back in there - and not surprisingly there's no uninstall option this time.

Problem solved it would seem. Sony issued a bunch of new driver updates through VAIO update yesterday. The shutdown problem has now completely disappeared. I also noticed the other day that the upgrade to 8.1 corrupted my PowerDVD program leaving it completly unusable. I had to uninstall / reinstall that to get it working again. Looks like I've managed to work through the 'teething problems' with 8.1 and get my system running smoothly. I don't think I'll ever be a true convert / fan of Windows 8, I'm especially annoyed by the way they are trying to force microsoft accounts on eveyone and steer us towards cloud storage, but it's not so bad once you work out the kinks and get used to it.
