I forgot to write the model numbers down but I doubt that computer could handle Windows 7. It is an AMD Athlon XP 2500+, 1.84GHz (dual core I think) with 2GB of ram. Oh, and I checked, no recovery partition. Guess I will leave it disconnected from the network and start looking for a replacement system. Thanks for all your help DFB.

Thanks for all the help. The biggest problem I will face is this particular computer when we bought it they stopped giving you an instillation CD with a new computer. I unfortunately did not realize this for a long time. And so did not make a backup of the computer when it was new. So I might have to check around and see if I can buy an old out of the box version of XP load it and see if I can round up all the drivers.I'll do some checking and see what I can come up with. Ran the first fixit tool, it said it didn't find any problems and so didn't apply any fixes. The second one ran and reset Internet Explorer. So I tried to rerun the first fixit tool but got the same results no problems and no fixes applied. Rebooted and Windows update still won't apply updates. I notice there were 11 optional updates for XP, took a look at them and there were several that pertained to the .Net Framework so I tried to install them and all 11 of those updates failed. At this point I think about the only thing left to do is wipe it out and start over. The machine is so old I'm just not sure it is worth the effort. I just can't afford a new one at this time.

I ran the Windows Repair Tool last night. When finished I ran Windows Update to see if it fixed it. Sorry I have been so late getting back to you. My father passed away Saturday June 22, 2013. I just got back to work today. Unfortunately now that the computer has been in use for a couple of weeks with no apparent problems they are reluctant to let me have it for a few more hours to run the last couple of scans. Not my call, I appreciate all the help. It's hard to get them to understand how big a chance they are taking when for the time being the computer seems to working fine. I appreciate all the help. I guess you can close this thread at least for the time being. I expect sooner or later they will be back in here crying because something has taken over the computer again. For what it is worth I am working with my boss to try to get some formal procedures in place for dealing with infected equipment. Unfortunately I have spent the last two nights at the hospital with my dad again. They sent him home yesterday evening with hospice care. Which basically means all we can do now is try to keep him as comfortable as possible. So naturally I will be spending as much time with him as I can after work since we don't expect he has much time left. So I will try to get some more of this done when I get a chance but it will probably not be real soon. Unfortunately the user with the laptop is out of the plant this week. Won't be back until Monday. With my luck will probably have something new when he gets back. So I guess we are on hold here for this week. On a good note, I have managed to get my boss to understand that this is simply not a "Run a couple of scans we are good to go" deal any more. We are going to have a discussion today or tomorrow about getting procedures in place for dealing with issues like this. That should hopefully make my job easier by letting them know that they are going to have to release their laptops to IT for cleanup following a suspected problem. At least it's a start.

I tried to install the KB2742597 update first and it failed. Error was: "The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable. Click ok to try again or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the instillation package 'netfx.msi'" I did a search for the netfx.msi file and could not find it so I clicked cancel and an error box came up "Error 1076 no valid source could be found for product .netFramework 1.1". Originally these were the four updates that were failing to install: KB 2691442 KB 2655992 KB 2829530 KB 2742597 Now there are three updates that fail to install. KB890830 KB2838727 KB2742597 The last one is the also in the first list but now there are two new ones and three of the first ones are apparently installed now. I guess that is progress.

I don't have a problem with my internet connection on this computer the only issue is Windows Updates fail and won't install. Do you still want me to run the fixdamage.exe tool?
