  1. Yeah, bleh, ASK toolbar lol The usual what, reformatting?
  2. Thanks Ron! Yep, its a Dell inspirion. I found all the drivers I needed probably about 6 months ago now . I just haven't had the time/motivation to do this yet. The sticker is still clear as day on the laptop, so I should be all set with the key & everything Yep, the CD I have is actually the Dell install CD, as far as I know. Er, I don't quite know what this means, I mostly don't totally know what a partition is lol. Thanks for the link The other reason I haven't really gotten around to doing this yet is because I have some files I am debating saving off of the computer before I do this (although I think I found what I wanted to save anyway on my current computer) but I am worried it could have an old infection on it, because when I was looking at the old McAfee quarantine a few months ago I found something with backdoor in the name :/ I was thinking about running the AVPTool on it and for kicks Mbam (since Mbam came out officially after this machine hadn't been online for a while) and perhaps SAS too. Then I would reformat. Edit: hehe enjoyed the Dilbert cartoon
  3. When you say update online, you do mean thru automatic updates/via IE, correct? Thanks for the tip One more question for you on this, then I'll try to leave you alone Since I've never really re-formatted before (other than that windows 95 machine that I kept trying to upgrade to Windows 98 since it came with a CD to do so, it never worked right, now I know why, most likely I needed to do a clean install, but that's another story lol) so when you check for updates via automatic updates/IE, would SP1 install first for XP or would I get all the updates at once? If it does download SP1 first, then I think it would be correct that I let that download & install first & then just install that SP3 download you gave me? And then as for the drivers, I think that before doing any updating to the actual Windows, I should probably install those first?
  4. Very true, it would most certainly be a good learning experience for me Last time I reformatted it was our Windows 95 computer, which was the first computer we ever had at home that was online I've already discovered that I can run Avira free on it too, so that's good. I wouldn't want to be without Mbam though I also have a ton of drivers I am sure I'll need too from Dell, that I already found a list for Thanks for the link, is that the SP you think I should download for the laptop?
  5. Well, Yahoo! Toolbar isn't so bad, so at least its that and not something else. But still. The user should be given the OPTION to install it or not. It should not be forced upon you and discovered after installation of your printer
  6. Thank you for the additional information, Ron. I appreciate it! This is an XP Pro laptop that I inherited from a friend of mine (she had gotten it through her high school) once she got a new computer that I used for college work and the last time it was online was late 2006 or early 2007. It has IE6 and SP2 . Last time I used it it was incredibly slow. So I don't even know if its worth getting it back up and running but I'd like to. I honestly don't know if its worth the trouble to go thru all that work, but at the very least I'd like to wipe the HD clean, and I do have the CD for it. No SP though, as its one of the first XP's to come out I believe.
  7. Thanks Ron! That's exactly what I wanted to know! I also meant to write in my question that I mainly meant for the PRO version (since of course it runs in realtime) but good to know for the free version as well. I'm sure others are wondering about it too! One reason I wanted to know was because I have an old laptop that I used to use a lot that if all goes well, I am going to re-format, get the motherboard battery replaced, and I was going to run Mbam pro on it if all of that works out It only has 256 MB of ram on it So good to know that Mbam pro should work on it, then
  8. I was just wondering if there was an official statement on the minimum system requirements needed to run Mbam? I haven't really seen anything on this site or in the program itself other than Windows 2000 is the oldest operating system it runs on. Other than the above, mainly I was wondering: is there a minimum amount of RAM etc... needed for Mbam to run properly?
  9. Eak! Thanks for the alert I didn't know that you could browse the web and such from your Wii
  10. Just chiming in for a second here, I also only have 512 MB of RAM and Mbam runs perfectly on my system So I really don't think that the amount of RAM has anything to do with this. I am not sure what P3-1000 is though.
  11. No IP blocks here with Windows Live Messenger. Maybe it's an advertisement? If it is because of an advertisement in the messenger, I am not getting it because advertisements are blocked for me with my security software.
  12. Hello Ricky O., and welcome to the forums here at Malwarebytes.org Please read here: http://forums.malwarebytes.org/index.php?showtopic=3228 And then post here: http://forums.malwarebytes.org/index.php?showforum=42 And someone will assist you as soon as possible. Thank you
  13. missbrokensmile, Actually, as long as you have not used the mbam-clean tool and as long as you have not deleted items from quarantine, the items will still be present in quarantine However, you may have been infected or you may not have been. You shouldn't just restore items from quarantine unless you know that they are truly a false positive. You should post your question here: http://forums.malwarebytes.org/index.php?showforum=42 Along with your complete scan log, so that someone can check for you and see if the items found were indeed False Positives or if you were actually infected. Malware will oftentime cause damage to systems as well. If you are indeed infected or were infected, you should most definitely follow gtyhfy's directions above my post.
  14. RazooN, If you are using XP, yes, you need to log in as an administrator in order to update. If you are using Vista or 7, you can simply right-click on the desktop icon/shortcut and select "Run as administrator", type in your password, and you'll be all set to update
  15. Just to add on here, I did some hunting around in the forum and here is a past topic that you may take a look at where this issue has happened before. http://forums.malwarebytes.org/index.php?s...banker+detected
  16. AVG... This has happened off and on since sometime mid to late last year... Mbam is definitely not a trojan, so you can safely de-quarantine the detection of Malwarebytes. This keeps happening, goodness knows why! Also, please do follow the instructions in the link given by prairie dog to add exclusions for Mbam to AVG if you haven't already done so. As a side note, when replying, please use the "ADD REPLY" button located at the bottom of the page, as this makes the forum easier to read. Thank you
  17. Sure, Stantheman, and welcome to the forums at Malwarebytes.org I think this is what you are looking for? http://forums.malwarebytes.org/index.php?showforum=39
  18. Hello Prosperous One, and welcome to the forums here at Malwarebytes.org I smell malware at work here. Do you think you may be infected? If so, please do the following so that you may get cleaned up. If not, someone else will be able to assist you with diagnosing this as I am not sure of the cause if it is not malware. We don't work on Malware removal in the general forums. Please read and follow the directions here, skipping any steps you are unable to complete. Then post a NEW topic here. One of the expert helpers there will give you one-on-one assistance when one becomes available. Please note that it may take 48 hours or more for you to receive a response in the malware removal forum, as it is often busy at times. Please do not reply to your own post asking for help unless its been more than 48 hours since you originally posted, as this can make it appear as though you are being helped and take longer for you to get help. If you are unable to do all or any of the steps in the link to the directions above, just post your problem into the forum I gave you a link to anyway and someone will be able to assist you. Also, when replying, please use the "ADD REPLY" button located at the bottom of the page, as this makes the forum easier to read. After posting your new post make sure under options that you select Track this topic and choose one of the Email options so that you're alerted when someone has replied to your post. Thank you

  20. One more thing here nottootechy, that I meant to post before, and should have, Are you finished working with IndiGenus in the malware removal forum? If not, please finish with IndiGenus first and we can pick up afterwards
  21. You're most welcome. A huggy smile would be good! Msn messenger and yahoo messenger both have one, but not on here heh. Whenever you are ready, please clicky here: http://forums.malwarebytes.org/index.php?s...st&p=242394
  22. Note: This thread is for nottootechy (although the CCleaner instructions & ATF instructions can be used by anyone). If you need assistance, please begin your OWN thread, and someone will be happy to help you when someone is available. No reason why we can't begin now with some stuff I've been itching to help someone with all this stuff! hehe Just because of the length of my posts and the fact that things can get very confusing with long quotes would you mind please using the ADD REPLY button at the bottom of the page? (picture of where it is located in case you have missed it will be attached to the bottom of this post). I see that you'd like to use ATF Cleaner & CCleaner. To begin; Download CCleaner from here to clean temp files from your computer. Double click on the ccsetup file to start the installation of the program. Select your language and click OK, then click Next. Read the license agreement and click I Agree. Click Next to use the default install location. Click Install then click Finish to complete installation. Double click the CCleaner shortcut on the desktop to start the program. On the "Windows" tab, under "Internet Explorer," uncheck "Cookies" if you do not want them deleted. (If deleted, you will likely need to reenter your passwords at all sites where a cookie is used to recognize you when you visit). If you use either the Firefox or Mozilla browsers, the box to uncheck for "Cookies" is on the Applications tab, under Firefox/Mozilla. Click on the "Options" icon at the left side of the window, then click on "Advanced." deselect "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 24 hours." Click on the "Cleaner" icon on the left side of the window, then click Run Cleaner to run the program. Caution: It is not recommended that you use the "Registry" feature unless you are very familiar with the registry as it has been known to find legitimate items for removal, which can cause issues with other programs. After CCleaner has completed its process, click Exit. Additionally, BEFORE running CCleaner for the first time, check the Windows portion (first tab) to uncheck anything you do not wish to have cleared. For example, you may not wish to have your Recycle Bin cleared. Then, click on the "Applications" tab and uncheck anything you may not want cleared there as well (for example, your AV. I accidentally cleared my AVG logs the first time I ran it, whups! Not all AV's will show up here, however, it does not hurt to check. I don't think that Avira does but make sure first if you don't' want scan etc... records cleared. Basically anything else in that tab is probably okay to clear, but again, please check it to make sure there is no other program you don't want logs wiped from (in case you want to reference anything in the future, in that case you wouldn't want them wiped). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune (just click the red link). Please see this link here on how to use it: http://www.atribune.org/index.php?option=c...5&Itemid=25 Again, if you don't wish to have your Recycle Bin emptied, make sure to uncheck that before you clear everything Typically I run CCleaner first and then run just the Windows portion of ATF afterwards. But whatever you wish to do is fine of course Let me know when you've finished that and then we can move onto a few more things I have in mind. Below is the ADD REPLY picture
  23. nottootechy, Actually, I am starting one for you right now, sans the HostsMan (I'll assist you with that tomorrow still) but in the meantime I will be starting off with directions for ATF Cleaner & CCleaner. And then a few other things I am willing to bet you definitely need to do (update programs such as Java, Adobe Reader & Flash, etc...). So expect a PM with the link shortly, or I can post it here. Let me know which you prefer Well thank you again I totally understand; I have gotten so frustrated and everything with computers before, trust me! It's definitely frightening. But now you're here and there is a vast wealth of information to be had on this forum and many people who are able to help you, staff and volunteers alike
