  1. Just for information for Avast Free users. Version 19.1.2360 has been released and there has been some changes to the Web Shield detection. It will interesting to see what effect if any this version has on the MBAM Web Protection issue. I realise of course that the problem we are discussing here goes beyond Avast (although there have been issues in the past) and even any other AV software full stop, but in some cases there may be an effect. I notice, having upgraded the software, that my MBAM exceptions in Avast appear to have been removed in the new version.

arbrich  ,  I ran the process you outlined. Let me get it right here. I should leave the CMD window open and active.   If so the file could be gigantic if there is no freeze for a couple of days. This is OK ??

Just as a guide I ran it for 2 hours before a freeze - the folder was just 200 MB in size by then but zipped up to about 38 MB so as you say 2 days may be a bit extreme!

For those willing, it would helpful to identify/rule out KB4471318 as the culprit by temporarily uninstalling the update from the machine. Instructions on how to so can be found below. Please let us know if this has any impact on the freezing/lock ups. Thank you!

    • Click the Windows Start 29Fou9c.jpg button. Type CMD in the search bar, right-click CMD and click AVOiBNU.jpg Run as administrator.
    • Copy and paste (right-click the Window + Paste) the following into the Command Prompt. Press Enter on your keyboard.

      wusa /uninstall /KB:4471318

    • A Windows Update Standalone Installer window will appear and search for the update. You will either receive a message that states the update is not installed or be prompted to uninstall the update. If prompted to uninstall, please do so. When prompted to restart, please consent.
    • After the restart, please monitor the computer and check if you continue to experience the freezing/lock ups.

Ok I am now running minus that update and Web Protection ON. I suspect that update will be superceded on patch Tuesday 08.01.2019 but will run a few days prior to that to see if I get a freeze regardless.

    Thank you for confirming!

Does your wife's laptop also have KB4471318 installed?

If you don't mind sharing, what network adapters are installed on your computers? To check:

    • Press the Windows Key + R on your keyboard at the same time. Type devmgmt.msc and click OK.
    • Expand Network adapters.

That's understandable. If you find the lockups become more frequent, we'd be very interested to hear the results of uninstalling KB4471318.

    Yes, that's correct.

    Thank you very much!

Ok there are 3 laptops in the family experiencing problems - all have the KB4471318 installed

    1. Dell Precision M6600 for for which I sent the crash zip file has Intel (R) 82579LM Gigabit Network Connection, Intel (R) Centrino (R) Ultimate-N 6300 AGN and Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter - this has been the most affected and always connected by ethernet via Intel (R) 82579LM Gigabit Network Connection

    2. Dell Precision M6700 has Intel (R) 82579LM Gigabit Network Connection, Intel (R) Centrino (R) Advanced-N 6205 and Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter - connected via Wifi Intel (R) Centrino (R) Advanced-N 6205 - 3 freezes on same network, 1 freeze on different network

    3. Dell Latitude 3540 has Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller, Dell Wireless 1705 802.11b/g/n , and Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter - connected via WiFi Dell Wireless 1705 802.11b/g/n - 2 freezes on different network.

Thank you for the information. To confirm, is that KB4471318?

If it is, would you be willing to temporarily uninstall this update and check if this has any impact on the freezing/lock ups?

Yes to confirm that is the update.

At the moment I am running your batch file with Web Protection ON and after a couple of hours I have had no freezes. This is not necessarily unexpected as my problem has been very intermittent. My lock ups have been thus:-

12th Dec - twice , 20th Dec - once, 27th Dec - twice, 28th Dec - twice, 29th Dec - once - none since but with Web Protection OFF since 29th when I discovered MBAM could be part of the problem.

So you can see there have long periods without lock-ups anyway. I do shutdown the computer regularly but use it daily.

For further information my wife's laptop froze yesterday for only the second time during this whole period and that is also used daily. It's at least 10 days since she experienced the problem and has never turned Web Protection OFF.

With respect to uninstalling the WU. Yes I would consider that option but given the intermittent periods between lock-ups (in my case) maybe that wouldn't tell us much in the short to medium term.

With respect to the batch file, I assume if no lock-ups during the period before shutdown, I simply x out of the CMD before shutdown and re-start the batch file after booting the PC back up?

Is there a way to know the date at which the component update was installed ??

As we have more and more people having this issue start I am trying to narrow it down to be the component update to see if the issues start after this latest auto update.

    Hi arbrich,

You should find a file named mbupdatr.log in %programdata%\malwarebytes\MBAMService\logs. The modified date of the file will tell you when the components package was installed.

Having checked the log I see my update to component 1.0.508 was at 9:15 pm on the 11th Dec - 4 minutes after the WU Security Rollup completed! The first freeze was the next day - easy to see why either could have been blamed.

If you would like to downgrade the previous version of Malwarebytes, you can download it here: https://malwarebytes.box.com/s/xq78v2de2k893g1h41upzbtqmsc6t375

You will want to go to Settings -> Application and make sure to disable the top option, "Automatically download and install application component updates"

Post #19 on the first page of this topic has a link to a 3'rd party site you can download a previous version from.

    Dave

Thank you both - that may be safer than continuing to run with Web Protection off

I not even going to reactivate mine until they fix this issue. windows 7 premium with Norton. It sounds like they December windows update clashed with malware premium

I am not discounting that as a possibility but some users here were reporting freezing problems prior to installing the December windows update apparently although in my case it happened for the first time the day after installing the WU.

  9. My freezing started the day after I installed the December windows update 12.12.18 and I really thought that might be involved. However, others on other areas of this forum have reported that their problems started BEFORE that update. The component update 1.0.508 was rolled out after 6th December and I'm uncertain when it would have been installed on my affected PCs but possibly around the same time as the windows update so it is difficult to know if that is implicated.

  10. In a spirit of adding as much information as possible. One of my affected Dell Laptops which I use less often ( I start up every 3-4 days or so) has just frozen again within a few minutes of startup. This is only the 3rd time this particular PC has frozen but each time it is within a relatively short time of startup which would suggest to me it is something within the software updating process that causes a conflict to occur. An almost identical Dell PC with the same software Win 7 32, Avast Free, MBAM Prem which I use daily and which has frozen several times is less likely to freeze within a short time of startup ie it is much more random, presumably because the software is already more up to date. I have not had a freeze since deactivating web protection on this particular PC.

  11. In answer to Arbrich - there are 4 Dell systems in my family - no-one using Dropbox. All with Win 7 and MBAM Premium and Avast Free. Two Precisions Win 7 32bit - one has frozen twice since 12th December the other one several times even though they are virtually identical setups. One Latitude 3000 series Win 7 64bit has frozen just the once despite being in constant use. The other newer Latitude 6000 series Win 7 64bit has never frozen in that time! As you say - a very strange problem. My problems started the day after all laptops received the December Windows Update and I really thought that was connected with the problem but I notice on this forum that others experienced the same problems before the Windows Update.

  12. Just to add it is affecting Win 7 32 bit machines as well. In my case Dell Precision Mobile Workstation. I have been struggling with this problem since the day after the December Windows Update and had assumed it was that causing the issue. Relieved but frustrated to come on this forum and find out the likely cause. Also seen the problem, but far less frequently, on Win 7 64 bit Dell laptop.

I notice today I am up to component update 1.0.8553 and seems like I'm having less issues or is that wishful thinking?

  13. Thanks for the reply and explanation. The change is, in fact, to me no big deal. My concern is always when one system appears to be different to another that some error has occurred and that the software may not be functioning correctly. In this case I did not look closely enough at the component updates which must have occurred when I changed license key.

  14. I recently changed my license key for MBAM 3.5.1 Premium and noticed that the tray icon now is missing the Updates: Up to date line. Also in the Settings Protection section under Updates the Notify me if time since last update exceeds 24 hours wording and slider are missing. I have 2 uninstalls with the clean removal tool and downloaded the latest free version again and this section is still missing - reinserting the license key makes no difference.

Can anyone explain this? I have other laptops running the same version where this is not the case. Intriguing!

I have Windows 7 Pro x64 and, like many here, was getting the web protection "Off" popup on every reboot. What I found was if I terminated and restarted MBAM, the web protection module would show as active with no error. So, with that in mind, my eventual workaround was to alter the service startup type of "Malwarebytes Service" from "Automatic" to "Automatic (Delayed Start)". So far, no error messages.

With that said, there is likely a potential security issue being created due to the delay in the service's startup, so keep that in mind.

Perhaps this will help someone else while a more proper fix is in process.

The Automatic (Delayed Start) setting is maybe related to what I have found seems to have worked. I noticed that on boot up the web protection appeared to be on and turn off again quite quickly and seemed to coincide with an immediate update and scan. I changed the scan timing and frequency so that this update and scan didn't occur immediately at boot up and for a few days at least I have not had the web protection off problem. The program has successfully updated and scanned at different times without the issue. Of course at boot up there are a number of services running and programs updating (eg windows update and AV definitions etc) and my uneducated guess is that is where the conflict is occurring. Of course it may all prove to be a temporary respite and this theory could be *******S!

  16. I had to do the reinstall because of the Malicious Website disabled issue and this problem with the delay box checked persists. You can uncheck it but on reboot it is always back to being checked.

In fact you don't need to reboot for this box to become re-checked. Uncheck the delay protection at startup box, exit the program, re-start the program the delay box is re-checked. A new version bug I would suggest. Its occurring on more than one PC even after re-install.
