  1. Just a follow up with some further information on UAC in Windows 7 to help you understand better.

Note that MBAM falls into the category of programs that perform administrative tasks so when you start the scanner manually, you are prompted. When you run the scanner automatically (Pro version only,) the privilege to start it is automatically elevated as well and you won't get a prompt.

What's New in User Account Control

Before the introduction of User Account Control (UAC), when a user was logged on as an administrator, that user was automatically granted full access to all system resources. While running as an administrator enabled a user to install legitimate software, the user could also unintentionally or intentionally install a malicious program. A malicious program installed by an administrator can fully compromise the computer and affect all users.
By default, standard users and administrators access resources and run applications in the security context of standard users. When a user logs on to a computer, the system creates an access token for that user. The access token contains information about the level of access that the user is granted, including specific security identifiers (SIDs) and Windows privileges.

When an administrator logs on, two separate access tokens are created for the user: a standard user access token and an administrator access token. The standard user access token contains the same user-specific information as the administrator access token, but the administrative Windows privileges and SIDs have been removed. The standard user access token is used to start applications that do not perform administrative tasks (standard user applications).

When the user runs applications that perform administrative tasks (administrator applications), the user is prompted to change or "elevate" the security context from a standard user to an administrator, called Admin Approval Mode. In this mode, the administrator must provide approval for applications to run on the secure desktop with administrative privileges. The improvements to UAC in Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 result in an improved user experience when configuring and troubleshooting your computer.

Guided Help: Adjust User Account Control settings in Windows 7

UAC is actually a good thing as it prevents a lot of things from happening in the background that you may not have been aware of. It doesn't annoy me at all.

  2. Hi RandyVogel,

It can be a little disconcerting for some when they are unable to reach a site and don't see a notification, but yes you can.

Just untick the check box on the Protection tab that says Show tooltip balloon when malicious website is blocked.

You can use this site to check your if your IP blocker is working. You shouldn't see the page, even if you don't get the notification.

  3. is there some way to get a notice when the update runs as to whether or not it completed. i noticed that the protection log shows 'update completed successfully' sometimes. what happens when there is no update to do?? does the protection log not record this fact??

it looks as tho protection log records the update when there is one available, but not when one is not available.. do you have to assume that when there is no protection log msg, that no update is necessary and that all is well(no errors, etc)..

    thanks :)

    Hi emilemma -

    Sorry for the confusion.

If you want visual notification when the update occurs without checking the log, just go to the scheduler and tick the show tooltip balloon after successful update on the update sub-tab.

Note that you cannot edit a schedule task. You will need to delete the existing one and create a new one.

We typically update 3-4 times per day on average. Seems to be a little bit more lately. If no update is available, there will be no notification in the log (unless an error occurs - such as no Internet connectivity) nor will a tooltip be displayed.

As for Flash scan, it will only run after a successful update. If it checks and no update is available, no scan and no log entry.

I think goldhound used the wrong terminology in his reply. That setting is in the Settings -> Updater Settings sub-tab and refers to main program updates, not rules database updates. It will download a new version of the program (if one is available) during the rules update.

    Hope that helps.

  4. Hi BrunSteve and welcome to Malwarebytes.org

I am unable to reproduce this.

I installed a fresh copy of MBAM v1.46 and updated the DB to 4916 on Win 7 X64 Pro.

Installed a new copy of Firefox 3.6.11 with no add-ons

Installed SpyBot S&D 1.62 and checked for updates. Currently 1.62.46 No TeaTimer installed. Resident SD helper was installed.

    Immunized both IE and Firefox.

    Exited the program.

Ran MBAM quick scan and exited.

Ran a Spybot scan and checked for problems. It only found one tracking cookie. No big deal.

Checked for Immunization again and all is OK.

I rebooted and ran an update for MBAM to DB 4918.

Scanned again with MBAM and a Full scan.

Opened Spybot again to check for immunization and again, everything was OK.

Are you running Spybot as an Admin? Until I applied run as administrator to the shortcut for Spybot, I was getting a pop up warning about needing to run as admin when I tried to immunize. When you click the OK button, it goes to the immunize screen anyway.

  5. Wow! I'm surprised by that video. Have to say I agree with it though. Free to install is just the beginning. Using software and maintaining it is a whole other thing.

However, I think Open Office is an excellent alternative, particularly for home users. I've used both and tried Open Office for over a year. I have to say I strongly prefer MS. Open Office loads a lot slower, though it seems I've read that's because of some built in tricks MS uses with loading their own version of Office. That was a while ago though, and I may be off base about that.

My main problem was getting the formatting to remain the same in a document created in Word and then edited in Open Office. Even reverting back to MS would not restore the formatting from 3 pages back to 2. Luckily, I had a copy of the original Word doc so that I could edit that one in Word instead, thus maintaining the 2 page format.

Then there was the inevitable problem of learning a different interface as well. For instance, envelope printing is way different between the two. The spreadsheet software was really tough for me to use, having extensive experience with complicated Excel files including some macros.

I'm glad Open Office is available. Like everything else, software gets better when there is competition to worry about. Maybe that's why MS is offering starter editions of Office with new PC's now?

  6. The 700 series error codes were abandoned with the release of version 1.45.

If you happen to get a 700 series error, please uninstall and then re-install the program using the following method:

    1. Uninstall Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware using Add/Remove programs in the control panel.
    2. Restart your computer (very important).
    3. Download and run this utility. MBAM-CLEAN.EXE
    4. It will ask to restart your computer (please allow it to).
    5. After the computer restarts, temporarily disable your Anti-Virus and Firewall, then install the latest version from here

Note: You will need to reactivate the program using the license you were sent

Launch the program and set the Protection and Registration.
Then go to the UPDATE tab if not done during installation and check for updates.

    Restart the computer again

If you continue to have updating problems after doing this, please start a new topic.

This particular topic is no longer germane so I am closing it.

  7. Have to say I agree with Sho-Dan.

Not necessary in my personal (not company) opinion and many members seem to drift off topic these days (not just here but in other threads I'm noticing) between trying to correct each other and apologizing on the other hand. Our real purpose of the forum is to help with running the program, keeping people from getting infected in the first place, and if they do, helping get them cleaned up.

If you guys really want it, maybe it should be opened to honoraries and other regular members with more expereince?

As Tedvim said, "there are a lot of things that need to be discussed before it can be a reality."

  8. I just downloaded new updates to Avira after seeing this post and didn't get any detection from MBAM.

My file version of avcenter.exe is 10.00.12.28

    File date is 2/22/2010

    File size is 381K

    MD5 is 41769d31ce9bb518aceabebf4bd4f675

No detections from VirusTotal or Jotti

I'm on Win7 x64 Pro with MBAM 1.46 DB number 4339 that downloaded at a little after 11:00 AM PDT this morning.

  9. Has anyone using Firefox 4b1 or 3.6.6 under Win7 x64 reported any problems using the basic editor in the forums? I have tried replying to posts and I see the text box with a single dash in the first line but no cursor nor does any thing appear when I type characters in the edit box. I have to quit and open a new reply window.

I'm using Win7 Pro x64 and FireFox 3.6.6 and I'm experiencing the same problem. To be honest, between the recent forum update, Firefox updates, a load of FireFox add-ons, all on a new PC, I haven't bothered trying to track down where the problem is exactly - too many variables for now and I just have other things to do as well. At first I assumed it was one of my add-ons but I also use the same add-ons on a Vista32 installation with FireFox 3.5.x and don't have this problem. One of my add-ons is IE View which allows you to right click and open the current page in IE (without a copy/paste operation,) so I've been using that in the meanwhile.

  10. Hi Classmom2, and welcome to Malwarebytes.org

You do not need to do a scan first to register.

    What error are you getting?

You should be able to click on the register button in the lower left of the program window and it should pop-up another box where you can enter your ID and Key numbers.

    post-13280-1279244422_thumb.png

It's usually best to copy and paste them from your Cleverbridge confirmation email, ensuring there are no spaces at the beginning nor at the end.

If you are unable to get the registration box to come up, please use the MBAM-CLEAN tool as outlined below and try again.
