Thanks Jacktivity - But once I've got the BIOS screen up , I don't actually know what to do! I've tried to have a play around but can't find anything that relates to the USB Port. Advanced Setup - I'm going to try the download of the last link you posted and let you know how I get on. Thanks
-
No (at least I don't think I have!) Can you advise how I do that please?
-
(Not directed at you!!!) That didn't work. Still not picking up any peripheral I try. Just going back a bit - just want to make sure that you know one of two USB ports works. Thanks!

Hello friends, Please can someone help me? I have a problem with one of my USB ports which is not working. I am operating Windows XP on a HP laptop. I've tried different peripherals but does not make a difference - it's seems it does not register the peripheral or power it. I've looked at 'Device Manager' and there is no 'exclaimation/question marks' next to the USB part. I look forward to help.... THANKS SO MUCH!!

Duh...could have really thought of that myself!! Anyhow, have now done that and it doesn't work. When I change the Source path to that folder, it still comes up with the same error message. Would it make a difference if I uninstalled PE builder and reinstalled and tried again?? -

ok...thanks for clarifying! well...I managed to get the BartPE to download and do it's thing. BUT big problem, it wo't complete because I have to use the original XP disc and then when it wants to burn it keeps comng up with an error as there is not a blank in the cd drive. When i take out the original XP disc and put in a blank it won't let me burn it because it comes up with an error saying it can't find file d:\i386\setupldr.bin It's like i need the XP disc to be in and the blank disc to be in the at the same time!?!?!?! Sorry, just some further clarification... As the laptop does not work, I will have to use another to download the BartPE - am I supposed to download and install on on the working machine then save to disk? (I'm a little unclear on the instructions!?!?!) Thanks. -

Hello, yes it is Windows XP. I have tried again but still unsuccessful. I will try the above as recommended. Please can you advise if this will mean that I lose all data on the laptop or will it still be recoverable provided that this method will work? Thanks -

Problem : it won't accept my adminstrator password. i have even tried to leave it blank. it's definately the right one!! i even tried it in lower/upper/mixed case! Is it going to be possible to get past that? Or shall I just throw it out of the window?!! -

sapna_chavda replied to sapna_chavda's topic in General Windows PC Help
Hi there, Thanks for the further instructions...it helped... BUT...it's not working. I have put the cd-rom in and restarted (I have to press the power off button in order to turn off the laptop, and then turn back on). When it boots up, I first get the Dell screen, then I get a screen asking if I want to start Windows Normally, in Safe Mode, etc. I hit Start Normally and then I get the Windows XP screen with the little bar at the bottom that shows its loading. I've tried to hit R for recovery but nothing happens. Then the next screen I get is a blue screen with the error message. What should I do now? Thanks Sapna -
Hey there, You guys are so excellent at helping me I just keep coming back for more!! I now have a laptop that is completely buggered...and am looking to you for assistance... I'm not sure what my mother has done or pressed, but everytime I turn the laptop on, all i get is a blue screen with the following error: STOP: c0000218 {Registry File Failure} The registry cannot load the hive (file): \SystemRoot\System32\Config|SONFTWARE or its log or alternate. It is corrupt, absent, or not wrtiable. I have no idea what this means...and I can't seem to get past it. Hoping to hear from someone soon with guidance on what to do (apart from through laptop out of window!) Thanking you ever so much Sapna

Laptop randomly switches off
sapna_chavda replied to sapna_chavda's topic in General Windows PC Help
I'm not sure that it's the poewr adaptor, it feels very secure and I've had a good jiggle about and it doesn't cause it to go off. I don't think it's the hibernate/sleep button being hit by accident as it happens when any of us use the laptop, and I can't imagine all of our fingers are that crazy!!! The power button is quite far up the top from the keyboard so it we would know when we are actually touching that... Can you explain what you mean by the internal power supply, and what can be done to cure the problem? Many thanks! -
Laptop randomly switches off
sapna_chavda replied to sapna_chavda's topic in General Windows PC Help
Hello, thanks for getting back to me. Ok so I'll try answer your questions as best I can... 1) Advent 7113 (not an all that great machine me thinks!!) 2) It's been happening for a while now (months I'd say at a guess!) 3) It can happen when I'm using a few programs, or if I'm using one. Also happens if I don't have anything but IE running. 4) Laptop only running on mains power at the moment, the battery has seen better days! So to answer that question, only when plugged in! 5) Bit difficult to answer that questions as it runs only on mains power 6) Plug doesn't "wiggle", and feels secure when plugged in. Hope that helps a bit... I have started to do basic things like disk cleanup, etc, as I think the laptop is over loaded. (by the way it's my partner's mum's laptop...i have the joys of fixing it!!) I don't know how much difference this will make. Hope to hear soon Many thanks Sapna -
Hi there, Not sure what is going on here... But I'll be using my laptop and then it will randomly completely switch off, no warning, no "your laptop is closing down", just goes off! Then when I press the power button to put it back on, sometimes it goes exactly to where it switched off, and sometimes boots up as though it's the first time i've switched it on for the day! It's driving me mad, as I never know when it will go off! Please please somebody help me..>!!! Thank you so much Disstressed Sapna
