  1. I turned defender back on and tried to "open" the java download and low and behold it did open and is now installed. Now I will give it a little time to see if it helps with my other issues. Which is shockwave crashes a lot when I open multiple tabs. I don't know if java has squat to do with shockwave so for me it's a shot in the dark. I will monitor this thread to see if you have any more instructions. Is this the step in Rkill that "fixed" my open .exe problem?: Resetting .EXE, .COM, & .BAT associations in the Windows Registr Much thanks to You and this forum. I will check back here in a little while. Doug Hendon

  3. I am running windows XP and have 512 ram (Dinosaur), I removed java completely a while ago and decided to try it again. I can download it, and it is in Chrome downloads, and in download folder's too. But when I try to "open" it, nothing happens. I gave up, and a few days later, I tried to download and open a memory test, it wouldn't "open" either. It too is in my download folder I googled ".exe files won't open running windows XP" and It brought me to a forum post here. I don't have the same symptoms as the post but the solution offered may solve my problem. Njustice replied to the forum and offered this: Please download EXE (lnk and regfile) Fix for Windows XP and save it to your desktop I run malware bytes regularly and after doing an update and running again It found a (pum highjack.startupmenu) I assume that is a virus, it has been quarantined.
