I ran memtest for over 2 hours and the computer was already warmed up already I got 8 passes out of it, and while I don't know all of what it said on the screen. It loks like I am running at the original 512 MB. Your right about Combo-Fix, and that is another reason for getting it off my computer. No it wasn't Gringo, but I think the fella got a little aggravated with me and my lack of computer knowledge, and he wanted me to copy and paste that line in Windows run, and I did, but after I wasn't successful he said to just delete it in the regular way. I am running memtest86 on it now because Norton says it only has 256 MB of RAM. I just ran memtest on my laptop and it too came with 51 MB of RAM. I ran it for 2 hours and got 8 passes, with no errors. I don't know if 8 passes is enough. Any how, the #s from this desktop don't look any where near the same as what I got on my laptop. Does this mean I have a RAM memory issue? I will post em here, maybe it will help us. I have been surfing now for about an hour at mafia wars via facebook and yahoo mail and watched some videos in the yahoo news feed. Seemed to do well. Success! I finally unzipped a file! I had been making it too complicated I guess. Very confusing, and had you not given me explicit directions I don't think I would have ever figured it out. I have memtest running right now on my laptop. It is going through it's 2nd complete run and it got a pass on the first run. From what i read before about memtest, it said to run multiple times, depending on what you are expecting your RAM to do for you. ie:gaming, or what not. When I get through with mine I will run it on this desktop. Norton(GAG) says this one is running on half, but I have found Norton is full of stuff. I don't know if I mentioned it before but Norton missed 310 threats on here. I called them and they said Norton has a different threat level than Malware bytes does? Well I guess so, that way you eventually get infected and you pay Norton more money to let one of there tech's to do a remote and remove what you already paid Norton to protest you from. At least that is what I think. I have several other issues you might be able to help me with. The first one being this. If I just right click on let's say Combo-Fix that is in my download folder and select delete, Am I actually removing all of Combo-Fix? Or, am I just removing some of the total files and such that Combo-fix put on my computer? The reason I ask is I was told in another thread to put this in the run box : c:\documents and settings\Curtis Lumpkin\My Documents\Downloads\ComboFix.exe /uninstal But when I do that, a box pops up that says it can't be found? I know Combo-Fix is on the computer because I ran it, so why can I not find it? I even used the search and searched everywhere including hidden files and folders. Not to mention the Combo_Fix that is in downloads. The reason I am so concerned about this is I have an issue with my hard drive. I am down to 3% free space so I can't defrag, plus, obviously, if I don't do something soon I won't have a computer. I'm sure it will blow a gasket. LOL I have all the tools still on my computer that was used to do the repairs that I have done here. I don't think that will be enough, but it will be start. I don't really have that much information saved on this computer. I have maybe a 100 songs, maybe 200 pictures, and 50 small documents, so I wonder where all my space has gone. Not sure right now, but I think it has 40 Gigs of hard space. (I will check that later to be sure). Well I downloaded 7zip and I am no closer to understanding opening Zipped files. I need to be spoon fed how to do this. I tried the extract feature in winzip and i seem to get more 2 more zipped files along with 4 or 5 Unzipped files, so am I supposed to unzip those 2 zipped files yet too? Then which of this multitude of files am I suppose to transfer to my CD burner? I do need to "burn" the CD right? Not just make a copy?

I will take a look at this when we get back form Christmas lucnh/dinner at a relaatives house. I don't seem to be able to unzip the memtest86.. Well we aren't too far from Houston, but 70 miles is a long way to go for the little things. It's 36 miles round trip either way to the nearest town, which is Woodville to the east, and Livingston to the West. Like I say there is only one little one man computer shop around and I imagine he would ask a high price for some Ram, but Walmart will come through for us. Good tip about the dust. I can get 2 sticks of 512mb for $37.00 at Walmart. I could get them for maybe $10.00 cheaper at Tiger or someplace like that. But Walmart will have them their by Thursday at the latest. Plus I would probably have to pay for shipping with one of the websites. So a no brainer for me. The specs look right too. pc3200 which is what it has now. So do you think I should go with 2 512s or 1 1 gigabyte?

I don't have it apart yet. I've been working with someone in malware hijack. It is my elderly parents computer and I am here for the holidays and I found 310 threats in it. They have Norton too! Malwarebytes found them but it could only solve so many problems with out some extra help.

Well I've had no luck finding the "uninstall" for ComboFix. It is in downloads. But I have used the search function and looked everywhere that I could. I went into the advanced search mode and when I did that it would not search at all. I assume that i can't just delete ComboFix from Downloads? I did try to write Defender off line with the ISO but due to my lack of experience I was unable to do it right. I did get some CDs today, and a flash drive as a back up plan. Ready for irony? OK, so I have my Dads computer cutting another Defender offline to CD, and I turn on mine to boot to have it ready to install the fresh CD I'm making. I look up and it's sitting there waiting for me to press any key to boot from the DVD! So I tap a key and off she goes to the races! Alas that was short lived because you have to be online to upload download updates So I have to move the ethernet line to it and it starts downloading the latest updates to the def offline. It wouldn't finish though. It said the connection failed, and it was taking a long long time to do it too. So I tried again 3 times and the same thing happened every time. I am working on my elderly parents computer and I believe that there is a RAM memory issue that, along with the severe infestation has brought this computer to a near standstill. While Gringo has been guiding me through a series of steps to remove a long list of adware, trojans, amd registry issues (it doesn't take 10 minutes to get online now). This computer came with 512 MB RAM. 8 years old and running XP. I ran free scan form crucial.com (RAM sales site)and it says I have DDR RAM. Well now my question is IS SDRAM and DDRRAM the same? I am under the impression that they are not. I understand that DDR stands for double data rate (184 pin), and SDR stands for single data rate.(168 pin) Well I am finding RAM for sale that have both acronyms. So does that mean that I can install a stick with 1 gig of SDR RAM on her? Is that what I want? Do I really want 1 stick with 1 gig in the DDR configuration? Do I HAVE to have matching pairs? I have heard that does not really apply to DDR.

The computer is doing a LOT better. Seems now it will "lock up" when I have several things going on. For example, I had 3 tabs open (Chrome) and I was trying to copy one of the log files to add here and I got the chrome is unresponsive box, and the OLT log file in notepad was "not responding" either.
