  1. Hello again Gringo, I have uninstalled ComboFix successfully. OTCleanIt.exe is currently NOT AVAILABLE via the link in your email. Error message says "503 Service Unavilable - The server is temporarily busy." I tried Googling OTCleanIt.exe, and got the same results upon clicking on any other links to download it. Looks like it's only available on that one server. So, I guess I'll try later tonight and see if I can download OTCleanit.exe and finish my cleanup efforts. I read through the suggested reading links regarding security awareness. The FIRST link, titled InternetSafety, is the best in my view. I think I'll bookmark that one and print it out as well. I've been a professional technical writer for over 25 years, and I can tell you that that first article is the best of them. Best content and best presentation of the informaion for readability and comprehension. Thank you so much for your considerablel help in getting my computer cleaned up! I'm not "rolling in the dough", as they say, but I will certainly make a donation for your efforts. I appreciate it! Bob
  2. Hello Gringo, Thanks for the Red X fix. I ran it, and they're gone! Am I cured of my evil computer gremlins? Are we done? If so, thanks again VERY much for your help! Bob
  3. Hello Gringo, The EDSET scan found some bugs. Here's the report: C:\Documents and Settings\Bob\My Documents\SA Work Computer Files\Documents and Settings\schultb\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates\P_IMI97.dot probably a variant of WM/Muck.AG virus C:\Documents and Settings\Bob\My Documents\SA Work Computer Files\Documents and Settings\schultb\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates\P_IMIjuly97.dot probably a variant of WM/Muck.AG virus C:\Documents and Settings\Bob\My Documents\SA Work Computer Files\Documents and Settings\schultb\My Documents\Bobs_Stuff\New_Templates\Office95TemplatesPublications\P_IMI97.dot probably a variant of WM/Muck.AG virus C:\Documents and Settings\Bob\My Documents\SA Work Computer Files\Documents and Settings\schultb\My Documents\Bobs_Stuff\New_Templates\Office95TemplatesPublications\P_IMIjuly97.dot probably a variant of WM/Muck.AG virus C:\Qoobox\Quarantine\C\Documents and Settings\Bob\Local Settings\Application Data\AIM Toolbar\Adobe\aepfemds.dll.vir a variant of Win32/Kryptik.AHKT trojan C:\System Volume Information\_restore{E992F3A9-B771-4024-B0BA-0CD12AF800B2}\RP577\A0170253.dll a variant of Win32/Kryptik.AHKT trojan ------------------------------------------------------------------ The first four are on some really old files from a previous workplace. The last two are a mystery to me. Please advise what to do next. REMINDER: I still have the problem of IE not displaying anything but boxes with red Xs in them for most of the graphics on web pages. I almost couldn't run the EDSET scan since I couldn't find the buttons to click on since they didn't display. Please advise on this IE problem. That's the only thing that isn't running at this point. Finally an observation: It seems to me that any ONE standalone antimalware or antivirus program is pretty useless if you have to run 5 or 6 of them to actually keep your computer safe. Do you agree? Thanks again for your help.

Instead, I kept Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro, since I'm a technical writer and need that program to do my work. HOW IS MY COMPUTER NOW: Everything seems to be running well. No problems with Windows Explorer, which was the original problem that started all of this. The only problem I see now is that Internet Explorer is having issues displaying graphics and icons, etc. Nearly every page I view has a lot of empty boxes with red Xs in them. This was not one of my original problems, but is an issue now. Don't know what happened to cause that. However, I intend to install and use FireFox and stop using IE as soon as you tell me it's OK to go ahead with that. Thanks.
  5. WOW! That's a big list! I'll do my best to get this all run today and post my logs/reports. ***
  6. Hello again Gringo, I have done as directed and run ComboFix again. I did screw one thing up during the process, as follows: I only turned off my Norton Auto-Protect to "until next reboot". So when Combofix rebooted my machine Norton said it found and removed "BloodhoundMAL.PE." I tried to turn off Auto-Protect before it coud affect the ComboFix run, but apparently didn't turn it off in time. You'll have to tell me if I have to run ComboFix yet again. The initial problem with Windows Explorer not functioning seems to have been corrected. I don't get the error messages about rundll32.exe upon shut down anymore. The only unusual thing now is that Internet Explorer does not seem to want to load and display many pictures on pages. I have LOTS of boxes with red Xs in them where graphics are supposed to be. That symptom was not present in IE before we started running these programs to fix my virus problem. I don't intend to use IE anymore anyway, but I'm wondering if that indicates there is still an issue somewhere. I intent to download and install FireFox as soon as these troubleshooting efforts are done. Thanks!

It downloaded the new virus definitions, and then I started the scan. It ran for maybe 20 or 30 minutes and then a Widows error window popped up and reported "Avast AntirootKit has encountered a problem and needs to close". I clicked on "Don't send Report", and then the aswMBR DOS box closed and the program terminated. The last line in the log file just before it caused the error message was: Scanning C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\AIM Toolbar\ieTool????? The question marks at the end of that line mean that I could not read any more of the line since the DOS box would not expand any further, so I don't know what that filename actually is. I stopped at this point and have not tried to run aswMBR.exe again. I will await further instructions from you. Thank you!
  8. Hello again Gringo, It will be tomorrow night or this Wednesday (July 4th) before I will have time to run these two new report. Thanks again very much for your help with cleaning this up! Bob

It got through "Completed stage-50, and then started deleting files. It delted a few files and then deleted C:\windows\system32\regobj.dll, and then deleted C:\windows\temp\logishro\lvprcinj01.dll. It got stuck after that last deleted file for over 30 minutes. I figured is wasn't going to finish, so I walked away after about the first 15 minutes of that delay. When I came back (after 30 minutes) the computer had rebooted. Then ComboFix created the log file and finished. I noticed that the files explorer.exe and rundll32.exe are both mentioned in the CombFix log. Those were the two files that MBAM found to be infected with the Heuristic.Reserved.Word.Exploit virus. MY RESULTS SO FAR: Windows Explorer now seems to be able to lauch files by double-clicking on a file in the file list. That was broken before ComboFix ran. Some of the file associations have been changed though, or put back to their defaults. For example, JPG files used to open in Corel Paint Shop Pro, and now they open in Windows Picture an Fax Viewer. IE is not now set as my default browser. I'm going to leave it that way and download and install FireFox instead. I no longer get an error message saying "rundll32.exe is not responding" upon system shutdown like I did before running ComboFix. I'll continue to do some more testing, but at the moment it looks like my bugs are gone. Now that this has all been done and you get a chance to look at my logs, please let me know if there is anything else that I should do at this point. Perhaps run another MBAM scan? I know I am behind on my Windows OS security updates. I should probably apply those I guess. Thank you very much for your assistance with this problem!!!!! Bob
  10. Hello Gringo, I just saw your response to my request for help. I think I have "watched" the topic, but I didn't receive an email. I'll check my spam folder for it. I will backup my hard drive witih Norton Ghost tonight and then run security check and combofix and generate the logs you need. Hopefully, I will get this all done tonight. Thank you!!! Bob
  11. Hello MBAM Experts, I sure hope you can help me. My computer was infected with subject virus on 6/25. I normally run Norton Internet Security all of the time, and then do manual scans with MBAM. My Symtoms: Windows Explorer can't do much of anything. It will open and I can see my file structure, but trying to run any operations from there, such as double-clicking a file to open it either doesn't work at all and it lock up or it takes a full minute or two before the associated app finally opens the file. Also, upon every shut down, an error message displays saying that rundll32.exe is not responding. I ran MBAM on 6/25 and it found that subject virus had infected explorer.exe and rundll32.exe. Here's that MBAM full scan report (the quick scan did NOT find these two): ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.61.0.1400 www.malwarebytes.org Database version: v2012.06.25.10 Windows XP Service Pack 3 x86 NTFS Internet Explorer 8.0.6001.18702 Bob :: BOB-2DUO-2-4GHZ [administrator] 6/25/2012 7:31:10 PM mbam-log-2012-06-25 (19-31-10).txt Scan type: Full scan Scan options enabled: Memory | Startup | Registry | File System | Heuristics/Extra | Heuristics/Shuriken | PUP | PUM Scan options disabled: P2P Objects scanned: 346340 Time elapsed: 1 hour(s), 14 minute(s), 53 second(s) Memory Processes Detected: 0 (No malicious items detected) Memory Modules Detected: 0 (No malicious items detected) Registry Keys Detected: 0 (No malicious items detected) Registry Values Detected: 0 (No malicious items detected) Registry Data Items Detected: 0 (No malicious items detected) Folders Detected: 0 (No malicious items detected) Files Detected: 2 C:\Documents and Settings\Bob\Desktop\explorer.exe (Heuristics.Reserved.Word.Exploit) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully. (end) ---------------------------------------------------------------- As you can see, MBAM indicated that it found both of these infections and corrected them, however all orignal sympotms still persist. If you need anything else please let me know and I will provide it. Also, you don't have to chastise me for using IE as my browser. My fellow exmpoyees at work have already done that job for you. So, I will be using FireFox from now on. No more IE for me. I hope you can help me get this bug off of my computer. Thank you in advance for you assistance. Bob
