  1. Before I sign off for the night, I'd like to encourage folks to start a regular "System Image" or "Disk Image" backup routine. This will take a snapshot of the drive that Windows is installed on (and other drives too, if you so instruct it). This is a stem-to-stern backup of your drive(s). There is such a backup program built into Windows 7 (Win8 is a bit more complex, but can also do it). In Vista Business and above and all versions of Win7, click on Start, All Programs, Maintenance, Backup and Restore. On the left side of the window, you should see "Create a System Image". The Wizard will guide you through the process, you only need an external backup drive large enough to hold the backup of your drive(s). Windows backup will replace your prior System Image backup every time you run it. It can take quite a bit of time, depending on how much data you are backing up. There are other programs you can purchase (Macrium Reflect, Shadowprotect Desktop are two that spring to mind) that allow more flexibility and even the option to restore your backup to an entirely different computer. They're not cheap, but think of it as a sort of a Groupon to your local PC repair store. You get a $300 - 500 (or more) disaster recovery repair at a substantial discount. That being said, always test your backups on a regular basis. Can you actually restore the whole system image, or any part of it as you please? Both your PC and your external backup drive depend on "Hard Disk Drives" and they can silently fail, making bits and pieces of your system or backup disappear. Please learn to use a S.M.A.R.T. analysis program as an adjunct to ensure the health of the hard disk drive built into your system and your external hard disk drives as well. One program that is free for personal and business use is Crystal Disk Info. It will even tell you about USB hard drives that are plugged into your system, as long as they use SMART monitoring. I usually use the "Portable Edition (zip) from Sourceforge) available here: http://crystalmark.i...ad/index-e.html This helps you to keep an eye on the health of your drives and even interprets the findings. It can take a bit of time to start up after you click Diskinfo.exe, especially if you have USB drives attached. Always nice to know the health of your main drives and the external drive you use for backup. Look at the top of the window and it will list your drives and note their condition, don't be intimidated by all of the information listed below. Your tech can help you understand that if action is required. If your drive isn't listed as being in "Good" condition, seek the help of a Tech and let them know what you've found. You may need to replace that drive to avoid data loss.
  2. Jazzbrew - Where are those files located? Are they in the Windows\System32 folder? I'll be hitting the sack soon, but perhaps you can find that info out so MBAM support can help you get to a solution faster.
  3. blargh - Do you have the Setup disk for Office? What version of Office do you have?
  4. Val, very sorry to hear you lost your data. That's why I said don't install or change anything till MBAM support could get to you. I'll send you a message with the name of an outfit I've worked with before. They're very good and very reasonable. Indeed, if there is any hope of recovering your data, you should stop using your laptop now. A wise decision on the backups, it's something I do nightly and every computer user should do it on a regular basis.
  5. Don't really know, but you might be better off just uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes, if the rest of the system is fixed.
  6. Jackwnoe I notice that with Win7, I can right click on a number of system folders (Program Files, System32, etc) and select Restore Previous Versions. So if System Restore is working for you, you might get ahold of the files you want that way (if you know where they go). Did you check the path listed in Quarantine to verify the files just aren't there?
  7. Val, I'll have to take off in a couple of hours and won't be available for a while. Be sure to check in at the other thread that Firefox mentioned once you get a copy of the Win7 DVD and can boot from it, if email support doesn't contact you first. Don't install stuff or change things around unless they tell you to.
  8. Jackwnoe, if you can get the files out of quarantine, I would imagine that would be the way to go. Also, can you get into System Restore at this point? I'd also suggest first creating a system image with Windows Backup to an external drive, if you can, just as a safety measure.
  9. Val, don't lose faith. I think you're actually pretty close to a fix. If you can't boot from a CD, you may need to watch your screen when the HP logo first appears to see if there's an option to choose which drive to boot from. I believe on your laptop you would have to hit the ESC key to get the boot menu in order to select the CD drive as your boot device, but check your screen to make sure. Do get a copy of that Win7 disk too.
  10. Yes indeed, Val. You may find a repair shop that can burn a copy for you, but in any case, best luck and I'll keep an eye out for you.
  11. Good info, Andertrack and jkrysinski. If you need some software to burn .ISO files to a blank DVD, CDBurner XP (works in win7 too) would be a good choice. When you run Setup for CDBurner XP, there will be a choice to associate .ISO files with CDBurner XP. Select that and when setup is done, you can just double-click on your downloaded .ISO, slip a DVD in your drive and click the Burn Disc button. Keep the disc on hand, but I'd suggest waiting for MBAM support to help you should you actually need to use it to repair your system.
  12. Val, if you do have another PC you're working from, on Page 9 in the link that Firefox posted, Andertrack 723 posted a link to a downloadable .iso you can use to make a Win7 install disc for repair purposes. Don't actually attempt a repair with that disk unless instructed to do so by MBAM support, but it would be good to have it on hand. You would need the 32-bit version.
  13. Advanced Setup, would it be possible to mod the tool so it could work on a slaved drive, or from a bootable environment without loading a user profile? Might save you folks a boatload of time...
  14. Thanks for the info, Val. How are you responding to me now? Are you using a smartphone or do you have another PC you're working from? Also, have you tried running the HP in Safe Mode?
  15. Sounds like a plan, Jackwnoe. May I suggest grabbing a copy of Crystal Disk Info to take a look at the health of your drives. It will even tell you about USB drives that are plugged into your system, as long as they use SMART monitoring. I usually use the "Portable Edition (zip) from Sourceforge) available here: http://crystalmark.info/download/index-e.html This helps you to keep an eye on the health of your drives and even interprets the findings. 16. Good deal, Jackwnoe. Are you able to make a system image backup of your disk at this point? Is System Restore available now?
  17. Val, if it comes to Data Recovery, I have a resource for you, but let's try less drastic means first, at least explore the current state of affairs without making changes so much. That way, when MBAM support gets back to you, perhaps you'll have some extra info for them that could help speed things along. What brand/model of system do you have and is your recovery cd one that came with the system or one that you created (a Win7 System Repair CD)? Also, what size hard drive is installed in your system and how much of it is used?
  18. Val485, do you have a Win7 boot disk (recovery disk, install DVD, etc)?
  19. Oddly enough, that same update didn't give me any FP's on my system, even when I did a demand scan of System32. Compdoc, I hope you found that your users got the corrected database and were unaffected. Probably depends on what time of day they update?
  20. For those having trouble getting to the F8 menu, hitting the spacebar repeatedly as the system is starting up may get you to a screen where you can use the F8 key.
  21. Would sfc /scannow from the Recovery Console (boot from Win7 DVD) be a good move here?
  22. Much more responsive. Took 17 seconds to enable M.W.B with the old database, CPU spiking to 90% on an Intel e3300 with 3GB Ram and Crucial M4 SSD. With the new database, done in 2 seconds, CPU jumps to 20% and settles back down right away. Thanks MBAM! What impact will this have on M.W.B. protection? Maybe time to switch to a different DNS service as an adjunct?
  23. I worked on an Acer Aspire with an AMD v120 cpu that was pretty badly affected as well (100% cpu load). It's running Win7 Premium with a single core CPU @ 2.2 Ghz. I would imagine some netbooks, etc. might have a problem with it too.
