  1. Thank you for that. I enjoyed reading it, and it gave me a new perspective on fighting malware. On my next PC I'll start with Mbam without AV. I like the concept s signatures often are false positives.
  2. I appreciate your candor. Ver 3 is advertised as a full anti-virus, but I have doubts. Thank you. And thanks for the Norton exclusion list. I do plan to attempt the upgrade again, but only when I have several hours to focus on it. What was frustrating was that V3 ran fine; it just wouldn't start again. Your list will prove a big help. Thanks much for that. david
  3. Thank you for your response, Firefox. Actually, I had seen another of your posts and that guided me through my testing. As you recommended, I tried CU4 and used the clean tool link you provided to remove the other version. As I had mentioned, Mbam 3 works fine when installed; it's the fact that it starts in reboot (shown in task manager) but doesn't run that was my difficulty. I reinstalled 2.2 and the ransomware beta and I'm okay for now. My guess is that something between Norton and Mbam is causing the difficulty and that's too much for me to spend time on right now. But I appreciate your advice. It's possible that I no longer need Norton, but I'm hesitant to commit to that. Anyway, thanks for taking time to share this info. I will use on my next attempt, possibly after another mbam update or two. Thanks, david
  4. Please disregard this thread. I finally reinstalled version 2 - and that took three tries before it settled down. I'll stay a happy camper with 2.x for now and try version 3 at a later time. Disappointing, since it seemed to work well.
  5. As an update I just tried the CU4 beta. Same results. I realize now I posted this problem in wrong category. My apologies to administrators.,
  6. I upgraded my Mbam 2.x to 3. It worked perfectly, did a scan and all seemed well. To be sure all was right, I rebooted. And Mbam now won't run. I do see mbam.exe *32 in task manager, but nothing is running and nothing in tray. I'm also running Norton Internet Security and Windows 7 Pro. Any tips on fixing this will be appreciated. Thank you.
  7. Well, as I mentioned in my post, I rebooted twice with no results. I have since submitted this to customer support and am working with a technician there. I did notice that another person had posted in a different thread with what appears to be the same problem.... no icon and no protection. When this gets resolved via tech support, I'll post the solution I received.
  8. I upgraded from 1.62 to 1.64. Rebooted and no icon tray. I clicked the deskton icon and could not set protection on. Rebooted twice more and still did not work. Reinstalled 1.62 and it worked fine. Then downloaded the malwarebytes 'clean' utility, ran it and reinstalled 1.64 from scratch and activated. Rebooted. No change. Rebooted again. No change. Task Manager shows Mbamservice and Mbamscheduler. Please advise. Thanks,
  9. I also upgraded from 1.62 with WinXP - never a problem until now. The icon isn't showing and I can't set protection on. I followed all of the above steps carefully and rebooted 3 times, but the icon doesn't show. I click the desktop icon and cannot set protection.
  10. Yes, I had current version. And I reinstalled 1.5 after seeing all the hits against Norton and the problem disappeared as soon as I reinstalled 1.5. Your post is the most encouraging news I've read - that there may be an issue with the Ignore list to be fixed in an upcoming release. With 1.5 I didn't need to use ignore list. I also has tried turning off execution file blocking in the Protection module, but that didn't affect the issue at all. Personally, I like running MBAM with Norton because MBAM does an excellent job of protecting my PC from rogue websites and has on several occasions detected a virus that Norton didn't see. Thanks for your help. And I would be glad to participate in a future beta release test, although I don't know how candidates are selected. Regards, david
  11. I respect that the system still works okay, but I have the same problem with Norton and Malwarebytes. The issue did not exist with MalwareBytes 1.50. This just began with 1.60, causing 4-6 hits to Norton every minute. There is an Ignore list, but that doesn't stop it. I posted this on the Norton forum and the feedback there is that it's not a good idea to run MalwareBytes in protection mode with Norton and to just run on-demand scans - but that indicates that the free MalwareBytes is all that's needed. The Norton forum also indicates a potential performance issue, even though the computer seems to be running okay. My hope is that the MalwareBytes developers investigate why this is happening in 1.60 and didn't in any prior version. I do understand that Malwarebytes probing Norton thousands of times a day isn't damaging anything, but it seems there should be a feature in Malwarebytes to know what programs to leave alone... or let the user define that in the Ignore list. Thanks for listening. david .
