Original message (Jan 27, 2018):
Earlier this morning, we published a protection update that caused connection issues for many of our customers. As a side effect of the web protection blocks, the product also spiked memory usage and possibly caused a crash. We have triaged this issue and pushed a protection update that resolves it.
If the update does not resolve the issue automatically for you, please shut down web protection, check for protection updates, and restart your computer.
The root cause of the issue was a malformed protection update that the client couldn't process correctly. We have pushed upwards of 20,000 of these protection updates routinely. We test every single one before it goes out. We pride ourselves on the safety and accuracy of our detection engines. To say I am heartbroken is an understatement.
We are working hard to not only triage your issues and get your computer or business back up and running but to also rebuild your trust. We are going to overhaul how we publish these protection updates so that this never happens again.
I am personally available to discuss both on this forum via personal message or at mkleczynski@malwarebytes.com
Updated message (Feb 2, 2018):
I have split my time over the last five days helping many of you resolve remaining issues due to this weekend’s incident and listening to your feedback. A key takeaway was the need for fuller documentation on how we intend to prevent incidents like this in the future. You can find a response from Malwarebytes Research and Engineering outlining that here. For a complete description and root cause analysis please click here.
Next week we will also be introducing a status page that indicates if Malwarebytes is having issues with any updates or with accessibility to any of our systems. The status page will be used to supplement customer communication, not replace it.
If you're in need of steps to remedy the issue, please go here:

One last note: turning off Web Protection temporarily is an interim solution.
Team has identified issue, I will update everyone shortly.

All, we are triaging this as we speak. I will have more information for you all shortly.

Hi there, we've launched the product.
We realize that not all bugs were addressed and have updates planned through the rest of the year

I am thrilled to announce the launch of our next-generation product, Malwarebytes 3.0! This product is built to provide comprehensive protection against today’s threat landscape so that you can finally replace your traditional antivirus.
Our engineers have spent the last year building this product from the ground up and have combined our Anti-Malware, Anti-Exploit, Anti-Ransomware, Website Protection, and Remediation technologies all into a single product which we simply call “Malwarebytes.” And it scans your computer 4 times faster!
With the launch of Malwarebytes 3.0, we are confident that you can finally replace your traditional antivirus, thanks to our innovative and layered approach to preventing malware infections using a healthy combination of proactive and signature-less technologies. While signatures are still effective against threats like potentially unwanted programs, large portion of our malware detection events already come from our signature-less technologies like our Anti-Exploit and Anti-Ransomware; that trend will only continue to grow. For many of you, this is something you already know, since over 50% of our customers already run Malwarebytes as their sole security software, without any third-party antivirus. But rest assured, we continue to support compatibility if you choose to use a third-party antivirus or other security software alongside Malwarebytes 3.0.
With the combination of our Anti-Malware ($24.95), Anti-Exploit ($24.95) and Anti-Ransomware (free, beta) technologies, we will be selling Malwarebytes 3.0 at $39.99 per computer per year, 20% less than our previous products combined and 33% less than an average traditional antivirus. But don’t worry, if you are an existing customer with an active subscription or a lifetime license to Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, you will keep your existing price and get a free upgrade to Malwarebytes 3.0. If you have both an Anti-Malware and an Anti-Exploit subscription, we will upgrade you to a single subscription to Malwarebytes 3.0, reduce your subscription price and add more licenses to your subscription. More on that below! As always, we will be keeping malware remediation absolutely free.
I am so excited about this product and its ability to replace your traditional antivirus. It’s something we’ve been working toward for many years, and something both our consumer and business customers have been asking for.

Thank you all for the tremendous help in testing thus far. Based on your feedback, we're releasing a second public beta. The team was able to squash almost 100 different bugs in this release.
1. It is a requirement that you must uninstall the first beta and reboot before installing public beta 2.
2. Due to a bug in the first beta's uninstaller, Windows Defender may turn off. It is imperative that you check the status of Windows Defender after uninstalling the first beta and make sure it's where you want it to be.
Change Log
- Many performance improvements, including reduced memory and CPU usage and quicker Malwarebytes startup times
- Several fixes to program update and upgrade functionality, including incorrectly showing the "Updates not current' message in the dashboard
- Added new error message if an update check failed due to no internet connection

As I mentioned to you on BleepingComputer, here are the facts:
1. The product has always been $24.95.
2. When we switched to a subscription model, we grandfathered in every. Single. Customer. Meaning, if you bought it, we honored your lifetime key and continue to do so.
3. We have almost 400 engineers, threat researchers, and more to pay. This is not an easy job, and criminals are way ahead of most security companies.
4. Remediation is FREE. Literally free. We build software to HELP YOU FOR FREE. I can't take the anger and reaction seriously when we clean up 250 million computers a year for FREE. This is not going away, consider this my pledge to the security community.
5. JRT is still maintained and free, AdwCleaner will be as well.
6. $25 a year is still one of the cheapest product on the market, by a substantial amount.
7. Ultimately, you don't have to use the product. Instead of posting hate speech, just go use a competitive product that fits your needs. AdwCleaner is not going away, you can continue to use it without Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. -
As many of you have already seen, last week I blogged that we would be getting more aggressive in the detection of Potentially Unwanted Programs, or “PUPs” as we call them.
I’d like to announce that we’re advancing that mission with the acquisition of AdwCleaner.
AdwCleaner is a popular product, installed over 200 million times, and used by consumers, technicians, and enterprises all over the globe to remove adware, browser hijackers, other potentially wanted programs, and more. As I write this, it averages more than 200,000 downloads per day. Jérôme and Corentin, the two engineers that have maintained the project from very early on, will be joining the Malwarebytes team.
Short term, we will work to give the product a facelift and enhance its detection ability. Over a longer period, we hope to learn from and integrate the technology into our flagship product, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. AdwCleaner will remain free as a standalone product.
Consumers and businesses download AdwCleaner more than 200,000 times per day, making it one of the most downloaded products on many sites. Installed around 200 million times, AdwCleaner has proven effective against bloatware, questionable software and specific types of malware.
As a reminder, you can read more about our PUP classification criteria here!

Thanks!

Hi all, as Pedro said, we are very excited about this beta. A few common questions came up and so I'll link a few of Pedro's answers that were scattered around the forums.
I have MBAM and MBAE. Why do I need Anti-Ransomware?
How do I report a False Positive?
Also, as many of you guessed, this will not be a standalone product/agent but rather rolled into our existing products.

Paul, wonder if just the presence of the file (in encrypted form!) caused Windows to trigger a recovery.
We do suggest decrypting the quarantined item using a clean machine and restoring it to Desktop and then copying over to affected machines and rebooting.

Hi guys, this appears to be an isolated incident. If you're having issues contacting sales or support, go immediately to me and I'll get you routed; mkleczynski@malwarebytes.org.

We've had issues prioritizing resources unfortunately, we are working on some interesting stuff though, but I don't have timelines .
Maybe I'll pick up a compiler and work it over

One of the biggest request from customers has been a version of Malwarebytes for the Mac. As of today, I'm happy to say that has officially changed with the announcement of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for Mac!
While we firmly believe that the threat landscape for Mac is not as mature as it is for Windows, there are still significant issues around the operating system. One prime example is the evolution of adware and potentially unwanted programs (PUPs) which Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for Mac detects and removes extremely well.
I wanted to take a moment to introduce Thomas Reed, our new Director of Mac Offerings. We acquired Thomas' product called AdwareMedic and his blog The Safe Mac because we truly believed that his product was the best in the market. Thomas will lead us through the same battle on the Mac that we've been fighting on Windows for 7 years now. A post from him will follow mine.
For the time being, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for Mac is only a removal tool. It will scan for, and remove adware, PUPs, and various types of malware, and it will do it all for free if you're a home user. If you're a business user, just fill out a form here and we'll let you know when we have a business version.
I'm very excited to have Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for Mac join our portfolio of products and to have Thomas on the team .

If you upgraded to 2.1.8 with no problems, your license was legitimate and will continue to report correctly to our licensing system for life.
-
Hi everyone, I never do this, but I'm going to close this thread before it turns into a silly fight.
We decided to give a small number of licenses out because we weren't certain of the key source and we didn't want to harm those who may have bought it on eBay or another legitimate source but from a illegitimate person.
If you truly feel cheated and want a refund, just message me. We'll give you back your money and turn off your license key.
We really are trying to do right by our users, and that includes those that may have been hurt by someone other than us.
EDIT: This is the type of situation we were trying to solve for.
-
I think the original question is around the perpetual license.
If you bought a lifetime license in 2010 it will still be a lifetime license today, even after you upgrade to 2.1.8.
