In Desperate Need of Help

Hi all,

 

Somehow, I've managed to get some malware on my PC. It seems to have infected all three browsers on my computer (Chrome, Firefox and IE), which are now cluttered with adverts and pop-ups.

 

I am running a 64-bit version of Windows 7.

 

I have tried using Malwarebytes Anti-Malware to perform a scan but it only found two items. I chose to quarantine them both, but the malware problem still persisted. I ran the tool again but it just detected the same two objects.

 

I then downloaded another tool called Trojan Killer which was recommended to me by a friend. That tool found over 13 different items (though many of them weren't really malware). Ones that it did find were called "Adware.RPL.Gen.bot" and were located in "HKLM\software\classes\widgetserv.widgetserver" and "HKCU\software\classes\.exe". I have no idea what any of these items are. Unfortunately, I couldn't afford to purchase the full version of Trojan Killer, so I was unable to use the tool to quarantine the detected items. I tried to find the items manually, but for the life of me, I couldn't find where they were located.

 

I then visited this site and performed the steps requested in the sticky topic. I ran the Farbar Recovery Scan tool and my results are attached.

 

Any help would be gratefully received.

General P2P/Piracy Warning:

 

1. If you're using Peer 2 Peer software such uTorrent, BitTorrent or similar you must either fully uninstall it or completely disable it from running while being assisted here.

Please run a Quick Scan with Malwarebytes

For Malwarebytes ver: 1.75

Open up Malwarebytes > Settings Tab > Scanner Settings > Under action for PUP > Select: Show in Results List and Check for removal.

Please Update and run a Quick Scan with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, post the report.

Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.

For Malwarebytes 2.0, please run a Threat Scan

Click on Settings > Detection and Protection > Non-Malware Protection > PUP (Potentially Unwanted Program) detections > Make sure it's set to Treat detections as malware

Same for PUM (Potentially Unwanted Modifications)

Quarantine all that's found

Then.......

Please download and run RogueKiller 32 bit to your desktop.

RogueKiller<---use this one for 64 bit systems

Which system am I using?

Quit all running programs.

For Windows XP, double-click to start.

For Vista or Windows 7-8, do a right-click on the program, select Run as Administrator to start, & when prompted Allow to run.

Wait for the Prescan to finish

Click Scan to scan the system.

When the scan completes > Close out the program > Don't Fix anything!

Don't run any other options, they're not all bad!!!!!!!

Post back the report which should be located on your desktop.

(please don't put logs in code or quotes and use the default font)

I have do as you instructed and run a quick scan with Malware Bytes and then a scan with Rogue Killer.

Make sure you have created a restore point and.....

Download Delfix from Here and save it to your desktop.

• Place a check mark in front of .......
• Create registry backup <---only!
• Uncheck the rest!
• Click the Run button.

  Close the tool out when it's done....we'll use it later.

  Download the attached fixlist.txt to the same folder as FRST.exe/FRST64.exe.

  Run FRST.exe/FRST64.exe and click Fix only once and wait

  The tool will create a log (Fixlog.txt) in the folder, please post it to your reply.

  Please download AdwCleaner from HERE or HERE to your desktop.

  • Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.

    Vista/Windows 7/8 users right-click and select Run As Administrator

  • Click on the Scan button.
  • AdwCleaner will begin...be patient as the scan may take some time to complete.
  • When it's done you'll see: Pending: Please uncheck elements you don't want removed.
  • Now click on the Report button...a logfile (AdwCleaner[R0].txt) will open in Notepad for review.
  • Look over the log especially under Files/Folders for any program you want to save.
  • If there's a program you may want to save, just uncheck it from AdwCleaner.
  • If you're not sure, post the log for review. (all items found are either adware/spyware/foistware)
  • If you're ready to clean it all up.....click the Clean button.
  • After rebooting, a logfile report (AdwCleaner[s0].txt) will open automatically.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that logfile in your next reply.
  • A copy of that logfile will also be saved in the C:\AdwCleaner folder.
  • Items that are deleted are moved to the Quarantine Folder: C:\AdwCleaner\Quarantine
  • To restore an item that has been deleted:
  • Go to Tools > Quarantine Manager > check what you want restored > now click on Restore.

  Please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.

  • Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
  • Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista or Seven, right-mouse click it and select Run as Administrator.
  • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
  • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
  • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
  • Post the contents of JRT.txt into your next message.

Thanks for the response, MrCharlie. I have carried out your instructions and the requested files are attached.

 

The malware seems to be gone, as there's no adverts on my browsers anymore.  However, I'm not going to get too excited just yet, as before I found this site, I performed a scan with JRT myself and it seemingly got rid of the malware, but then it returned a few hours later (and with a vengeance!).

Same thing happened again, sadly. Restarted my machine after the JRT scan and the malware is back. There's adverts and pop-ups all over my browsers again.

 

I've noticed the system is being a little slow and sluggish too. After the JRT scan, I couldn't connect to some websites too, including Wikipedia for some reason.

Please read the directions carefully so you don't end up deleting something that is good!!

If in doubt about an entry....please ask or choose Skip!!!!

Don't Delete anything unless instructed to!

If you get the warning about a file UnsignedFile.Multi.Generic or LockedFile.Multi.Generic please choose
Skip and click on Continue

If a suspicious object is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue

Please note that TDSSKiller can be run in safe mode if needed.

Please download the latest version of TDSSKiller from HERE and save it to your Desktop.

• Doubleclick on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application, then click on Change parameters. (Leave the KSN box checked)
  
  
• Put a checkmark beside loaded modules.
  
  
• A reboot will be needed to apply the changes. Do it.
• TDSSKiller will launch automatically after the reboot. Also your computer may seem very slow and unusable. This is normal. Give it enough time to load your background programs.
• Then click on Change parameters in TDSSKiller.
• Check all boxes then click OK.
  
  
• Click the Start Scan button.
  
  
• The scan should take no longer than 2 minutes.

The most important things to remember when running it is to disable all your malware programs and run Combofix from your desktop.

Ensure you have disabled all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Information on disabling your malware programs can be found Here.

Make sure you run ComboFix from your desktop.

Give it at least 30-45 minutes to finish if needed.

Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply for further review.

If you get the message Illegal operation attempted on registry key that has been marked for deletion after you run ComboFix....please reboot the computer, this should resolve the problem. You may have to do this several times if needed.

Yes, all three of my installed browsers (IE, Firefox and Chrome) are affected. Or at least were - the malware has seemingly disappeared after running TDSS and ComboFix, but I have a feeling it'll reemerge.

 

I did the TDSS Scan but it found nothing. I have attached the logs.

 

I also ran ComboFix, but looking at the log afterwards, it seems I mistakenly left Windows Defender enabled. Would you like me to run it again but with Windows Defender disabled?

I don't recall ever installing it and I have no idea what it is. Looking through the folder's files, it's pretty obvious it is related to my web browsers. I have attached a few screenshots showing the contents of the folder.

 

 

 

 

This folder was actually one of the first things I suspected of being malware. However, I couldn't delete it manually because it said the file was already open in another program. That folder even showed up around the same time the malware did (on July 14th).

I've checked my browsers and they're still clogged with adverts and pop-ups. My browsers are now behaving even more unpredictably, as many pages fail to load up due to random errors - it was actually a challenge just to reach this thread.

See if you can run this scan:

Please run a free online scan with the ESET Online Scanner (it may take a while to run)

Note: You will need to use Internet Explorer for this scan.

First please Disable any Antivirus you have active, as shown in This Topic

Note: Don't forget to re-enable it after the scan.

Click Start

When asked, allow the ActiveX control to install

Click Start

Make sure that the options Remove found threats is unchecked and the option Scan unwanted applications is checked

Click Advanced settings and select the following:

• Scan potentially unwanted applications
• Scan for potentially unsafe applications
• Enable Anti-Stealth technology

Click Start

Wait for the scan to finish

If threats were found:

Click on "list of threats found"

Click on "export to text file" and save it as ESET SCAN and save to the desktop

Click on back

Put a checkmark in "Uninstall application on close"

Click on finish

I restarted my system and the adverts have remained gone. Looks to me like we've cleared it up.

 

System is a lot slower than usual though, I must admit.

I noticed that you have Defender enabled and running.
Seems you have Kaspersky as your main anti-virus and firewall.
So please permanetly disable Defender.
Having two anti-virus programs running on a system only causes poor performance, conflicts and spotty protection.

Clean out temp files:

Download TFC from here and save it to your desktop.

Close any open programs and Internet browsers.
Double click TFC.exe to run it on XP (for Vista and Windows 7 right click and choose "Run as administrator") and once it opens click on the Start button on the lower left of the program to allow it to begin cleaning.
Please be patient as clearing out temp files may take a while.
Once it completes you may be prompted to restart your computer, please do so.
Once it's finished you may delete TFC.exe from your desktop or save it for later use for the cleaning of temporary files.

Thanks for the reply. The ads and pop-ups have definitely disappeared from my browsers. 

 

I disabled Windows Defender and cleaned up my temporary files with TFC.

 

I ran a Malwarebytes threat scan and it found two items (the same two items that it always finds, but never seems to get rid of when asked to quarantine them).

I was able to delete the superfish files manually. I did another threat scan with Malwarebytes and it detected no items. 

 

My system is behaving a lot better now too.

Download Security Check by screen317 from HERE or HERE.

• Save it to your Desktop.
• Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
• If you get Unsupported operating system. Aborting now, just reboot and try again.
• A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt.
• Please Post the contents of that document.
• Do Not Attach It!!!
